Despite this being possibly the biggest meltdown in any sports franchise history, somehow Nico could actually somewhat salvage things if they immediately flip AD to a desperate team for like 4 first round picks. Then the net change ends up being Luka for five 1st round picks and Max Christie. Goes from being the all time worse sports trade to 'only' a very bad trade
Biggest front office gaff: 1996 Magic or the 2025 Mavs?

Context: Magic didn't want to pay Shaq. Mavs didn't want to pay Luka.

Both legendary players ended up in LA.

Sp*rs didn't want to pay Nephew. We know how that turned out. I dare you farmers to balk at paying Wemby!

not even in the same universe as the Magic lowballing Shaq. That sh!t happens all the time

To give you perspective, I've casually watched less and less of the Cowboys over the years with Jerruh as owner and it was only around 2020 that I just stopped watching the games altogether. So even someone as bad as Jerruh, got almost two decades of fandom out of me before checking out. Even then, I'm not bandwagoning to another team, just not watching until he's no longer the owner.

The Luka trade is so bad, that I immediately became a Laker fan (can't change the NBA skin on ST anymore) like, there's no justification for remaining a Mavericks fan when your Magic Negro GM is willing to destroy the franchise in the middle of the night when you have a generational talent. Imagine the Thunder or Cavs gutting their roster right now for journeymen players, that's basically the only thing I can think of that is worse rofl

I cant think of a sports team that had such a large downfall this quick tbh. From the NBA Finals to arguably worst future in the NBA.
    1 player downfall. No I can't either.

Dodgers traded Piazza. Comes to mind MVP level player still in prime and outta nowhere. Dodgers declined and Mets (acquired from Marlins) reached the World Series a few seasons later.

The Mavs had been taken care of upon Cuban's reign by the NBA in New York. (He) was permitted to fly coast-to-coast warning the NBA owners that no longer would they be permitted to be the Lakers farm teams. Stern stood down, kept silence and was not named in Cuban's indictment. That was the deal. "Yes, you're owner, yes you can indict the owners, out of court, but I must remain untouched. Deal?"

    "Deal."

We lost our advantage in the blink of an eye and couldn't even fight back because what we'd been doing was unconscionable.

Obviously the debt has been paid, Cuban has had enough vengeance and now wants to turn lose the ligature and we got a ringer, well, a possible ringer, in Luca.
    He ain't Daddy.
    &
    He ain't Kobe.

And it'll never be like it was pre-Cuban. But I have the memories and those cannot be taken from me.

Does nobody else think the league played a role? Even if the owner is a cheap ass why make a secret pact with the Lakers of all teams? The Mavs could've started the biggest bidding war of all time if they would've informed other teams he was available.
    -league struggling
-gift wrap Luka to the league's biggest brand
    -repay Dallas with Cooper Flagg

How is the NBA being rigged not blatantly obvious? Although tbf Wemby was probably rigged for us too. Not a big market but the Spurs are a pretty big brand for the league as well--especially internationally.

Congrats Mavs fans on winning the draft lottery. Huge draft, 1.8% chance to win, but you got it done. Should be fun to watch him develop. He and Luka will make a great pair in LA in a few years

Spurs ain't no big brand. Look at your ticket prices. Courtside season tickets at half court probably cost 3 horses and a cow.

Are you suggesting the NBA only rigged the lottery for San Antonio when the obvious, generational talent #1 prospect had a terribly boring personality and was virtually unmarketable? I’m not sure. But that’s what it sounds like you’re saying.

A future hall of famer that fans don’t give a about? Oh, well here you go, San Antone!
