Fire at Tesla dealership near Rome destroys 17 cars

Rome CNN — At least 17 Tesla cars were destroyed after a fire broke out at a dealership on the outskirts of Rome on Monday morning, according to Italian fire officials. No one was at the dealership when the fire broke out and no injuries have been reported.

Rome’s fire service said it was investigating “all avenues” while looking into how the fire started, but it did not rule out arson. Local police said officers interviewed the dealership owners and are looking at surveillance footage.

The fire comes after a string of reports across Italy in recent weeks of Tesla vehicles being vandalized and defaced, with anti-Elon Musk and anti-Donald Trump sentiments written with spray paint.

Another car dealership burned down in northern Rome a week ago, destroying 30 cars, including used Teslas. That fire was initially blamed on an electrical fault, but an investigation is underway.

Also in Rome, several Teslas in the Garbatella neighborhood, where Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni grew up, were defaced, according to police and social media posts. Meloni and Musk are self-described close friends, but the Italian leader has not commented on the vandalism. Tesla dealerships in Milan have also been targeted by environmental groups in recent weeks.

Starlink rival Eutelsat rolls out wifi on Air Canada planes

Eutelsat, Europe's rival to Elon Musk's Starlink constellation of internet-providing satellites, said on Wednesday it has started providing onboard wifi for passenger and business planes.

Its was now delivering broadband connectivity to Air Canada aircraft and some corporate jet outfits, it said in a statement.

It added that it had a "backlog of over 1,000 aircraft scheduled for installation".

The European satellite operator is vying to be seen as an alternative to Starlink, as companies in Europe and elsewhere look askance at Musk's political manoeuvrings as advisor to US President Donald Trump.

EU set to fine Elon Musk's X up to $1 billion for breaking disinformation law

The European Union is poised to fine Elon Musk's social media platform X a record $1 billion after it broke landmark laws combatting illicit content and disinformation, sources told The New York Times.

The move will likely ratchet up tensions with the U.S. as it targets one of President Donald Trump's closest advisers. The penalties will reportedly include a fine and demands for product changes.

The penalties will reportedly be announced this summer and will be the first under the new EU law intended to force social media companies to police their platforms.

Elon’s Edsel: Tesla Cybertruck Is The Auto Industry’s Biggest Flop In Decades

    ...
Judged solely on sales, Musk’s Cybertruck is actually doing a lot worse than Edsel, a name that’s become synonymous with a disastrous product misfire. Ford hoped to sell 200,000 Edsels a year when it hit the market in 1958, but managed just 63,000. Sales plunged in 1959 and the brand was dumped in 1960. Musk predicted that Cybertruck might see 250,000 annual sales. Tesla sold just under 40,000 in 2024, its first full year. There’s no sign that volume is rising this year, with sales trending lower in January and February, according to Cox Automotive.

And Tesla’s overall sales are plummeting this year, with deliveries tumbling 13% in the first quarter to 337,000 units, well below consensus expectations of 408,000. The company did not break out Cybertruck sales, which is lumped in with the Model S and Model X, its priciest segment. But it’s clear Cybertruck sales were hurt this quarter by the need to make recall-related fixes, Ben Kallo, an equity analyst for Baird, said in a research note. Tesla didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The quarterly slowdown underscores the fact that when it comes to the Cybertruck, results are nowhere near the billionaire entrepreneur’s carnival barker claims.

“Demand is off the charts,” he crowed during a results call in November 2023, just before the first units started shipping to customers. “We have over 1 million people who have reserved the car.”

In anticipation of high sales, Tesla even modified its Austin Gigafactory so it could produce up to 250,000 Cybertrucks a year, capacity investments that aren’t likely to be recouped.

Tesla Semi suffers more delays and ‘dramatic’ price increase
    ...
The goal was to start production in 2025, start customer deliveries, and ramp up to 50,000 trucks yearly.

Now, Ryder, a large transportation company and early customer-partner in Tesla’s semi truck program, is talking about further delays. The company also refers to a significant price increase.

California’s Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC) awarded Ryder funding for a project to deploy Tesla Semi trucks and Megachargers at two of its facilities in the state.

Ryder had previously asked for extensions amid the delays in the Tesla Semi program.

In a new letter sent to MSRC last week and obtained by Electrek, Ryder asked the agency for another 28-month delay. The letter references delays in “Tesla product design, vehicle production” and it mentions “dramatic changes to the Tesla product economics”:

BYD's global EV takeover is far from over as overseas sales double to start 2025

    ...

BYD sold 377,420 new energy vehicles (NEVs) last month alone. Like most Chinese automakers, BYD reports NEV sales, including plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and fully electric vehicles (EVs).

Of the 371,419 passenger vehicles BYD sold in March, 166,109 were EVs, and the other 205,310 were PHEVs. Combined, BYD’s sales were up 23% compared to last year.

BYD’s Dynasty and Ocean series accounted for 350,615, while its luxury Denza brand sold 12,620, Fang Cheng Bao had 8,051, and its ultra-luxury Yangwang brand sold another 133 models.

Through the first three months of 2025, BYD sold over one million (1,000,804) NEVs. That’s up 60% from the 626,263 sold in Q1 2024. Fully electric models accounted for 416,388 while PHEV sales reached 569,710, an increase of 39% and 76% from last year, respectively.

EU wants Elon Musk's X to pay $1B in penalties for 'disinformation,' and Trump can't stop it | Cryptopolitan

At the same time, the EU has opened a second investigation into X. This one is wider and targets the platform’s loose moderation policies. Two people familiar with the matter said officials are building a case that X became a hotspot for illegal content, including hate speech and political lies, that damages democracy across all 27 member states. Officials believe X’s hands-off policies allow harmful material to spread too easily, without accountability.

The point here is even if the US has sadly gone asleep at the wheel, many other Western democracies have not. And free speech for me but not for thee is pure snowflakism.

Neurotic compensation for masculine insecurity is a major theme of right-wing mythos

I know that sounds puny, but the overcompensation bathes in human blood taken as a rightful tribute for love denied by an unappreciative public
