Officials at Utah Iron LLC announced on Wednesday that the company is suspending its mining operations at its Iron County facility, effective immediately.
According to a news release sent out by Jenn Rhodes, executive director of operations for Utah Iron, “Significant fluctuations in global markets have created an unusual and strenuous amount of uncertainty for buyers and sellers.”
Accordingly, the news release quotes company officials as saying, “We are navigating uncharted waters with unfamiliar and seemingly insurmountable risks. While it pains us to suspend our mining operations, it is a necessary step while we regroup and adjust to current market pressures."
Located approximately 15 miles west of Cedar City, Utah Iron is one of Iron County’s larger employers, the news release states, adding, “The company also supports many other small and large business(es) locally and regionally as well as major transportation providers, railway and sea shipping, that will be impacted.”
Rhodes confirmed to Cedar City News that more than 100 employees are affected but declined to elaborate in further detail.

https://www.politico.com/news/2025/0...akeup-00284597President Donald Trump this week upended not just his tariff strategy but his trade team
Former hedge fund manager and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent — the White House’s main conduit to beleaguered financial markets — is now at the helm, with populist Peter Navarro relegated to the sidelines and Wall Street punching bag Howard Lutnick recast into the role of “bad cop,” according to three people close to the White House, granted anonymity to speak frankly about internal dynamics.
The diminished roles of Lutnick, the Commerce secretary who for weeks had been the administration’s point person for foreign leaders on tariffs, and Navarro, Trump’s trade adviser, reflect this week’s turmoil over Trump’s trade policy and a shift toward the “fair trade” policies Bessent has been advocating. One of the people, who is close to both Trump and Navarro, said the trade hawk still has the ear of the president, adding that Trump respects Navarro’s aggressive populism, but that “doesn’t mean he’s at the center of it.” A second person said the White House believes it can leverage Lutnick’s difficult personality in negotiations.

Tell me you've never bought eggs without saying you've never bought eggs.
U.S. egg prices increased again last month to reach a new record-high of $6.23 per dozen despite President Donald Trump’s predictions, a drop in wholesale prices and no egg farms having bird flu outbreaks.

fwiw, no I don't buy eggs
But egg prices at the grocery store, prices reported in some data reports like the consumer price index and prices on the wholesale market don't always match. The rise in prices has been largely driven by the highly pathogenic avian influenza, or bird flu, outbreak...."

...
A mass exodus would spell big trouble for Palm Springs. In 2017, Canadian visitors brought in about $236 million and stayed more than twice as long than other visitors, averaging eight days.
Some Canadian visitors are saying that they’re alienated by Trump’s rhetoric toward immigrants, his initiation of a trade war and his comments referring to Canada as the “51st state.” There are reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have detained Canadian visitors for days, and in response, advance bookings for summer flights between Canada and the U.S. are down 70%.
At Palm Springs Airport, two Canadian airlines, WestJet and Flair, both cut seasonal flights earlier than expected, according to the Desert Sun.
“As much as it breaks my heart, I will not place myself & others I love in such a vulnerable position by travelling in the US, no matter how many banners are put up espousing a place’s love for Canadians,” Lisa McMillan, a Canadian user, wrote on Facebook in response to the welcome messages at the airport.

Shale boss Bryan Sheffield, the son of Pioneer Natural Resources founder Scott Sheffield, appears to have called on America's shale drillers to cut drilling immediately, as Brent crude flirts with prices below $60 and WTI falls to $57/barrel.
Sheffield, who controls Formentera Partners LP, told Bloomberg he is planning to delay drilling in some cases, shift focus to existing short-term drilling contracts, and return to expanding the company's uncompleted wells once the market stabilizes, given the chaos and oil price plunge caused in part by Trump's tariff warfare.
Sheffield reportedly told Bloomberg that the situation right now is a "blood bath".
"The industry needs to cut immediately and hunker down to let the tariff war play out," Sheffield was quoted as saying.

https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/11/chin...-april-12.htmlChina strikes back with 125% tariffs on U.S. goods as trade war intensifies
China on Friday retaliated against U.S. President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs by raising its levies on U.S. goods to 125% from 84%, the Chinese finance ministry said.
“Even if the U.S. continues to impose higher tariffs, it will no longer make economic sense and will become a joke in the history of world economy,” the ministry said in a statement, according to a CNBC translation.
“With tariff rates at the current level, there is no longer a market for U.S. goods imported into China,” the statement noted, adding that “if the U.S. government continues to increase tariffs on China, Beijing will ignore.”
The Trump administration confirmed to CNBC on Thursday that the U.S. tariff rate on Chinese imports now effectively totals 145%. Trump’s latest executive order boosted reciprocal tariffs on Beijing to 125%, stacked on top of a combined 20% fentanyl-related tariff imposed in February and March.
