its about the expectated points per shot. an open corner 3 that goes in 45% of the time (HB made 48% of his, or as Sean Elliott put it, 100%) is getting you 1.35 points per attempt. you'd need a 2pt shot with an expected 67% to compete with that. basically, a shot at the rim.
now, a team settling for low% 3's, bad, pull-up contested looks without having created a true open or catch and shoot look that will only go in ~30% of the time is only as good as a 45% 2-point shot, which as we know is not good.
then yes theres the added expectation of fouls, how long rebounds are, etc.
usually, boston doesnt just walk the bull up and hoist a 3. sometimes tatum goes in iso mode and does this, but generally boston is swinging the ball around and attacking, creating a consistent stream of open 3pt looks, which is why theyve been successful
