It's the most SpursTalk thing ever to get on people for offering free money.

    Spurs fans are so spoiled
I'd argue that it's the most SpursTalk thing ever to complain to people who are offering a free product that they have poured years of their time and effort and money into, but we can agree to disagree here.

When you start taking other people's money (even if volunteered), that comes with expectations and implications. I'd offer to chip in too if it was wanted because I love this place, but they probably haven't taken up the offers for a reason.

Pretty sure they aren't getting rich off SpursTalk, and they also have their own lives and families to attend to.

The thing that honestly triggers me the most is that timvp is completely unresponsive.
He's obviously visiting the site when he puts up post-game grades, is it so much beneat him to just acknowledge us and say he can't do anything about the issues if he's got no power over it?
Spurs are on a upwards trajectory and this place will get a lot more traffic pretty soon if it stays alive, it would just be a shame to throw away 20+ years of history just like that.
The reason is they don’t care about you and everyone on this forum. No matter how much Dex likes to spin it. When your loyalty is based on your nostalgia, you’re doing it wrong. Someone could treat you nice 20 years ago and then treat you like nothing today. It happens.

This may be one of the most ungrateful things I've ever read here, but okay...continue to whine and complain because occasionally the page won't load or is acting slow.

I don’t know why you are acting delusional about what’s going on in here. Are there any lies being told? The owners of the forum have abandoned its community. Have they not? Many people in here have offered to help make improvements and help with payment, yet the owners have ignored them. Is that not true? What is giving you the impression that the owners respect you and your time? Are they putting in so much effort to maintain this website? No. Someone says it costs $40 annually to keep the forum open. That is probably 1% of their paycheck. Your simping for their financial contributions and effort is out of control. It is nowhere near deserved.

About 10 years ago I was in discussion with Kori about selling the site. I can tell you right now, this number is BS. Not sure if I should post exactly what she told me what it costs to maintain the site out of respect for private discussion, but you are magnitudes off.

Anyone with technical expertise have any idea what could explain the randomness of the site being available/load appropriately? It seems like if this was hosted by a third party, it wouldn’t be so random

Spill the number. It’s not like this forum is a technical marvel, or built by Bill Gates or some well known developer.

if you read the error message you will see it is caused by a DB table holding the sessions getting full, probably purged on a periodic basis which causes the sporadic behavior.

I have no clue about any of this stuff... but I am curious how much money we are really talking here.

Looks like you can get the "Gold" hosting package from vBulletin for $75/mo: https://www.vbulletin.com/en/vbulletin-cloud

But I'll caveat this and say before I could move on to the next page and see what the Forum software costs... the vBulletin page became non-responsive and wouldn't load anymore Maybe that's the problem.

It can't be more than $100 per month even if we include the spurstalk site itself, not just the forum.
Unless they were paying for some rip-off package.

Alright, this isn't really provocative information and it is from 2015. This is what she told me:

    >> The forum is on a two-server platform, and we own the servers. Maintenance costs are probably about $500 a month.

Keep in mind this is essentially the pre-cloud/personal-hosting era and your maintenance costs were primarily based on bandwidth usage. So I believe her. I also believe they probably still own the servers and never migrated to a hosting service, but I could be wrong.

Packages today are based on compute power. The more traffic, the more resources needed to process that traffic, the higher the cost. You don't just get some static number, a site with 100 views a month vs. a site with 10,000 posts a month cost dramatically different.

I pay $175 for 3yrs of unlimited bandwidth. Most forum software is open-source too.

Really depends who they go through for hosting.

No one is housing their own server bro. The cloud has been forever.

It really depends on options like HA and FT, virtualization, etc.

vBulletin is just the software the forum uses.

That doesn't account for domain hosting, servers and storage, maintenance, and essential services like security, backup, etc.

I help support a different website which I just had to renew and just the domain and essential services was around $400 for the year...and it only gets a fraction of the traffic that SpursTalk gets.

Also, I think someone earlier mentioned DDoS attacks and stuff like that which could definitely be a factor.

The page I linked to (which is working now) isn't for the forum software, it's for vBulletin's hosting service. But the fact that it went down while I was randomly looking at it doesn't exactly provide a ringing endorsement.

If people help monetarily with expenses would that create more headaches for Kori and LJ with tax season rolls around? Not sure but that could be the case.

lol 200 GB/month. I use that on my phone. This site probably uses 10-20 times that month, so $750-1500 a month in charges.

btw: the reason vBulletin can still charge on bandwidth is because they can directly translate their bandwidth usage to compute power, just to clarify my previous comment
