I was watching the video below on how one-way players (all offense, no defense) are an archetype that's dying out.

Then he talked about Reed Sheppard and how yes, his size sample is small but he kind of fits this mold. That we'll get a better feel of him this year when he presumably gets a bigger role on the Rockets this year.

Then I started to think what if the Spurs had the 3rd pick last year, would they've still chosen Steph Castle over Reed Sheppard. I still yes and it's not because of hindsight or anything like that. I just think the Spurs don't want small guards anymore (we've seen the guards and types of players that they're bringing to the team) and I feel like they valued Castle over Sheppard even in the draft last year.

I have no doubt in my mind the Spurs were taking Stephon Castle no matter where they drafted.

They'd been in on him for years and had a dedicated scout at UConn practices, were very close with the staff up there. Castle was their guy.

Spurs plan for building around Wemby is obvious and will be easy to execute if at least one of Castle/Harper develops into at least a borderline all-star player.
Fox will be the known quan y for the foreseeable future, two of them will grow alongside Fox and all we need after that is to stack up on 6'7-6'10 3-D wings. It's that simple because Wemby will be that good in no time.

I'm just still not certain of Castle's ceiling. At times he looked like the next Jimmy and then there were games where he looked like your typical rookie on a tanking team just putting up empty numbers.
And it's not just about his shot, but overall game.

If Castle and Harper both develop, I can't see us not winning a lot. Obviously assuming Wemby stays healthy.

To me it's also obvious that no matter how sexy the thought was of paring Wemby with Tre Young, the Spurs had a different gameplan once Wemby was drafted (no midgets one-way players). Also why they probably didn't even entertain the thought of drafting Rob Dillingham as well.

It's also why they're hoping that Vassell, Johnson and Sochan become the players the this team needs because they have the tools for sure.

the spurs also tried their hardest not to start Tre Jones. even after re-signing him to a 2 year deal, they tried the point sochan thing first, and even when they gave up on that, they began starting Branham at point next to Vassell. it took a branham injury for them to plug in Tre, and they never looked back that year

I think there is still a place for the one-way player in the league... but that place is the bench.

Cam Thomas, Jalen Green, Anfernee Simons, Devin Vassell... all would be really nice sixth man microwave scorers (on the appropriately sized contract, that is).

I like Castle, but in this video he's the guys who makes the less shoots he attempts, contrary to almost every other no names there.

To date he hasn't demonstrated he can hit threes at a reasonable percentage.

Same as you I like him- while you can see path to him becoming a premier player- but you can also see a scenario in a few years the Spurs part way with him (Especially with Harper being a bit similar)

I haven't watched the video yet. I'm a little lost with what you've said as your English isn't clear.

They had a designated scout embedded at UConn all year. I think not only would they have picked Castle with #3, I think they would have picked him with #1.

I think they would've traded down to #3 or #4, no way they would've used #1 on Castle when it would've been easy to find a sucker that wanted Sarr.

Thanks for clearing that up. That makes sense now. If I had of watched it, I probably work it out and don't need to ask. Man, Steph can shoot, but some of his misses in games were just off. It seems that he does have a bit of a feel for shooting, so I hope he can get consistent at it.
When I first saw him and how inconsistent his misses were, I thought this isn't a guy that has no feel, but I think he is going to have to/really need to keep working at it to become a good shooter.

Sarr was actually only picked #1 because Risacher refused to to work out for the Wiz. There really wasn’t a player to hold a team’s feet to the fire to trade down and get assets, no clear cut and defined #1.

Sarr was the one that did not work out and he did not work out for Atl as he felt he would be a better fit with Wizards. Zaccharie Risacher worked out for both teams.

    Sorry for being French…

I’m just saying that, contrary to the other guys in the video, who are not well known like Castle who is the reigning ROY, he doesn’t make a lot of his shoots

No need to apologize or anything. I just wanted to know what you meant as I hadn't watched the video yet and I didn't understand (sorry that I didn't). Spurraider21 did watch the video and knew what you were saying/meant.
