Poland says 32 people detained and suspected of coordinating with Russia for sabotage

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Tuesday said authorities have detained 32 people suspected of coordinating with Russia to engage in acts of sabotage, according to Polish news agency PAP.

One person has been convicted, while the others are in custody awaiting trial, PAP reported.

The group includes a Pole, Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians, PAP reported, as well as a 27-year-old Colombian man who is accused of two arson attacks in Poland last year at Russia’s behest.

Russia's oil and gas revenues fall for third consecutive month

    ...
Russia collected 787.3 billion rubles ($9.8 billion) from oil and gas taxes in July, which is down 28% compared to the same month in 2024. Over the first seven months of 2025, oil and gas revenues fell by 19%, totaling 5.52 trillion rubles ($68 billion) — below the 6.78 trillion rubles collected in the same period last year ($84 billion).

Mineral extraction tax (NDPI) revenue — a key component of Russia's energy income — plunged 38% year-on-year to 634.1 billion rubles ($7.9 billion), with oil companies contributing 543.4 billion rubles ($6.7 billion), 36% less than in July 2024.

Gazprom, Russia's state-owned gas giant, has seen its exports to Europe hit lows not seen since the 1970s, according to the Moscow Times. Earlier, in July, the EU approved the 18th sanctions package, lowering the price cap on Russian oil from $60 to $47.6 per barrel.

The cap was originally imposed by the G7 in late 2022 to curtail Russia's oil revenues without destabilizing global markets.

Initially, Russia's Finance Ministry had projected 10.94 trillion rubles ($136 billion) in oil and gas revenue for 2025. That estimate has now been revised downward by nearly a quarter to 8.32 trillion rubles ($103 billion).

Ukraine could have probably preserved a lot more territory if Zelensky had negotiated a long time ago.

That time was long before you were allowed to criticize Zelesnky for anything.

Russia's budget deficit hits $61 billion, already surpassing annual target by 30%

Russia's federal budget deficit rose sharply to 4.9 trillion rubles ($61.4 billion) by the end of July, the Russian Finance Ministry reported on Aug. 7.

The government had originally planned for a 3.8 trillion ruble ($47.6 billion) deficit in 2025. The July figure already exceeds the government's full-year target by more than 30%.

The deficit comes as the Kremlin raised defense spending to its highest level since the Cold War and as many Russian officials warn about the possibility of recession.

The deficit jumped by 1.2 trillion rubles ($15 billion) last month alone, "mainly due to a decline in the average price of oil," the ministry said.

In just seven months, it has already spent 25.2 trillion rubles ($316 billion) of the 42.3 trillion rubles ($530 billion) annual budget, with a typical end-of-year e in spending still ahead.

July revenues totaled 2.7 trillion rubles ($33.8 billion), while expenditures soared to 3.9 trillion rubles ($48.9 billion), up significantly from 3.2 trillion rubles ($40.1 billion) in June.

While the Russian Finance Ministry claimed spending is "on schedule," the overall budget performance paints a bleaker picture. Revenues grew just 2.8% year-on-year in nominal terms, while expenditures jumped 20.8%. In real terms, adjusted for inflation, revenues declined.

Oil and gas revenues, still responsible for roughly one-third of federal income, fell 18.5% over the first seven months of 2025 compared to the same period last year. The decline accelerated from the 16.9% year-on-year drop reported for the first half of the year.

Finland was forced to negotiate with Stalin during the Winter War to survive.

Should Finland have said "no, we can't negotiate with Stalin because he doesn't deal in good faith"? You fool.

Brand-New Russian Navy Tug Sinks at St. Petersburg Shipyard Before Entering Service

A newly built Russian Navy tugboat, Kapitan Ushakov (Project 23470), sank on August 9 near the pier of the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg during final outfitting works, according to Russian media outlet Fontanka.

The incident occurred in the evening of August 8 when the vessel developed a list to starboard. Emergency services and shipyard personnel attempted to stabilize the tug throughout the night but were unable to prevent it from capsizing. By morning, the vessel had settled on the bottom alongside the pier.

The Baltic Shipyard’s press office stated that the pier was leased by the Yaroslavl Shipbuilding Plant, which was responsible for completing the tug.

According to the Russian Investigative Committee’s regional transport division, the flooding began in the auxiliary machinery compartment, causing the list that led to the sinking. Investigators are conducting a pre-investigation check under an article related to violations of construction safety regulations.

Finland's population was outnumbered 1:40, not 1:3 like Ukraine. And Finland would have continued to fight if the help from western powers wasn't delayed, because they were busy fighting Stalin's ally at the time. And finally, getting abandoned by the west is why Finland fought on the side of Nazis in WW2, so you bring up a really good cautionary tale about abandoning smaller democratic countries.

P.s. the only reason the soviets agreed to peace, is because they planned to take over Finland later.

Trying to boil down Russia's advantage to population edge is wildly simplistic. Ukraine has been given an absolutely historic amount of aid and is still losing. There is no realistic path to victory for Ukraine. You can spin it however you want but even Zelensky now admits Ukraine can't take back all its lost territory by force.

p.s. the only reason the soviets agreed to peace, is because they planned to take over Finland later.
That's a dubious claim given that they had plenty of time to actually do that after WWII and they never did.

Looks like Alaska is returning to Russia. I'm guessing giving Russia some land is the only to keep peace.

I mean if Putin wants it there's just no way to resist him.
