government's shut down, but we have money for this

A statue of the Confederate general Albert Pike that was pulled down and set ablaze in Washington, D.C. in June 2020 during the Black Lives Matter movement has been renovated and reinstalled in Judiciary Square. The reinstallation on Saturday was a follow-through of an earlier National Park Service announcement that the federal government intended to restore the statue, which it says had been damaged in "riots."

The monument to Pike was first erected in 1901, but has long been a contentious issue within the nation's capital.

The Pike statue is the only monument within Washington, D.C. to honor a Confederate general – but it does not mention his military history. Pike, who was a Freemason and was pardoned by President Andrew Johnson, has also been identified by historians as possibly having been involved with the development of the Ku Klux Klan in the period after the Civil War.

The plaque at the base of the statue, which was originally mounted by the Freemasons, calls Pike an "author, poet, scholar, soldier, jurist, orator, philanthropist and philosopher."

It sounds crazy to say that Republicans are making children go hungry to protect pedophiles, but it’s actually a reasonable interpretation of the situation.

    Shutdown RIFs fail at inception

    Trump's big mouth didn't help

A federal judge in San Francisco on Tuesday indefinitely barred the Trump administration from firing federal employees during the government shutdown, saying that labor unions were likely to prevail on their claims that the cuts were arbitrary and politically motivated.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston granted a preliminary injunction that bars the firings while a lawsuit challenging them plays out. She had previously issued a temporary restraining order against the job cuts that was set to expire Wednesday.

Illston, who was nominated by Democratic President Bill Clinton, has said she believes the evidence will ultimately show the mass firings were illegal and in excess of authority.

pawning the people's misery for political clout is a dangerous tactic if the people can see you doing it

24 states are suing Trump for illegally withholding SNAP

On Friday, the administration issued a memo claiming it can’t tap a contingency fund that currently has about $5 billion in it for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, also known as food stamps, because it’s reserved for sudden emergencies like natural disasters.

The website for the Department of Agriculture also now has a large banner at the top declaring that SNAP has “run dry” and “there will be no benefits issued November 01.” The message blamed Senate Democrats for “hold[ing] out for healthcare for illegal aliens and gender mutilation procedures,” attempting to blame immigrants and trans people for the ongoing shutdown.

But the reality is that not only is the contingency fund meant to be used in this exact fashion, it’s illegal for the Trump administration to refuse to do so. The Food and Nutrition Act of 2008, which reauthorized the food stamp program and changed its name to SNAP, statesclearly that benefits “shall be furnished to all eligible households who make application for such participation.” And the contingency fund would allow those benefits to be delivered as required. Instead, the administration is rejecting its authority, holding hungry families hostage to an ongoing political fight over government spending.

As David A. Super, professor of law and economics at Georgetown University, put it, “There are no ifs, ands, or ors there.” Anyone who is eligible and applies must be paid benefits. “I don’t know how Congress could have written it more clearly,” Super said.

Trump is choosing this outcome because he wants Americans to suffer and die if he doesn't get more power, right away

“People can die” from even short gaps in nutrition and food access, said Lindsay Allen, a health economist at Northwestern University. She notes that people with diet-sensitive chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease rely on SNAP to buy nutritious food that helps them manage their conditions. Diabetes rates, for example, are higher among lower-income Americans, affecting 13% of people who live below the federal poverty level.

Without those funds, people may skip meals or opt for cheaper ultra-processed foods, which tend to be lower in nutritional value and higher in ingredients like sodium and sugar, according to Colleen Heflin, a professor of public administration and international affairs at Syracuse University. Either option could have immediate impacts on their health.

Research also suggests older Americans who receive SNAP are less likely to skip medications, presumably because they have more money to go toward copays.

“People are going to go hungry very quickly,” said Allen. “And then their health is going to deteriorate.” Even if they’re cut off from benefits only temporarily, she said, they may get evicted or have their power shut off or skip medications in the meantime. “So what kind of compounding effect does that have?”

“Food insecurity in and of itself is a health risk,” she added. “As soon as SNAP benefits stop, you see immediate declines in dietary quality and in ongoing nutritional stability.”

Yes, I've recently replied to a graph you posted wrt the ACA

It only slowed the growth of healthcare costs, it never reduced them in absolute terms because it never sought to manage the costs.

Republicans have raised the price of the ACA in the BBB and now refuse to pass a fix, do you have anything to say about that?

Why do you want it to be less affordable, snacks?

Explain your desire to raise health care premiums for millions of Americans.

Is your emotional fragility covered by your plan?
