Partisan gerrymander struck down in Utah

Third District Judge Dianna Gibson rejected new congressional boundaries proposed by Republican legislators late Monday night, instead choosing a map that will create a heavily Democratic-leaning district in Salt Lake County and shake up Utah’s political landscape.


“In short, [the Legislature’s map] does not comply with Utah law,” Gibson wrote in her ruling. “Because the Lieutenant Governor’s November 10, 2025, deadline for a map to be finalized is upon us, the Court bears the unwelcome obligation to ensure that a lawful map is in place, which the Court discharges by adopting” a map submitted by the plaintiffs in the yearslong lawsuit.


The map Gibson selected makes a district of the northern portion of Salt Lake County, and splits Utah County into eastern and western districts, ultimately creating a district that truly favors Democrats for the first time in a quarter century.

The court went on to note Abbott’s statements as well. Brown then acknowledged that the state and federal executive branch officials statements are not “automatically imputable to the legislature,” but he continued:

Direct evidence in the preliminary-injunction hearing shows that key legislators in the 2025 redistricting process had the same racial objectives as DOJ and the Governor.

The Virginia State Supreme court has a conservative majority, so very low chance they allow that to happen especially mid-decade even with a democrat legislate super-trifecta and dem governor. We've seen recently the opposite-sided courts have final says in maps even in spite of very blue states like NY and Maryland and very red states like Kansas and Utah.


As for the Tennessee race, Van Epps will win, but the fact that it will be likely within 10% is alarming, but it is a special election and the dems are the high turnout party in special elections and have been for a decade, really means nothing for 2028 or even 2026.
