magic jack seems to be self sufficient, its easy to install but the downfall right now is that if your people are local to your area if you had to use an outside area code because yours is not available they have to pay the charges even if longdistance to call you but other than that its a good item. i have one tried it and sent it back after 5 days because of this alone.

I have one for over a year now and I like it the onli problem they do not have nebraska area code and it is not fun for your friends in the samt city to call long distance.

I have had the MJ since October of 2007 and it was working on and off. All I would do is run the upgrade and it would work again. However, about a month ago the MJ disappeared from my computer altogether. There is no drive for the MJ and the softscreen is missing. When I try to explain this to the Chat techs they insist I run all their programs again and again. Once they run out of options they tell me to reboot my computer and if the problem still exist to chat again. I have chatted about 10 times already and each time I need to start right from the beginning with the new tech. They don't want to hear that you already performed all their programs to fix it. It's frustrating and not worth it. All I want them to do is replace it for another and they won't do this for me. So be careful if you purchase because it may work for a short time and than stop running.

Judging by the user-reviews, I think I've found the solution for those having trouble with their MagicJack.

In order for your MagicJack to work properly, you must root for the Spurs.

What a pile of crap! The Magic Jack is a half ass attempt at being something it's not. The device's performance is spotty at best. I have the highest available ATT Broadband service and the thing still works intermittently...when it's even working. IT'S JUNK!!! Oh, and don't bother trying to get technical support...sticking bicycle spokes in your eyes is less painful. Don't waste your time or money...or if you must spend, save money and get the next best thing...two cups and a string. If you still refuse to heed this warning you can buy my Magic Jack on eBay.

Hate to say this, but you must be a little delusional. I purchased one and it works just fine. I do have to agree with you however on the quality of the tech support. It is quite inferior. I read another post about acquiring an RMA number saying it was impossible. I called and got the information, went to the web site they provided and was given an RMA number and an address to return my product immediately.

Regarding the Magic Jack. I just received mine in the mail. I've made several phone calls and everyone on the other end says my volume is low. I hear them fine....but they
say my voice is very soft. I've gone on the Magic Jack "chat" support line and they really had no idea how to increase the volume. Support is very weak. I also tried 3 different phone's on the system and nothing changed.

I got rid of my home phone last year. I set up my laptop to run the magic jack full time. I disabled the standby mode on a laptop, set up the laptop on our home network, and it has been working 24/7 for months. I reset the computer once a month when I do updates. With a family constantly using the home phone, it was great to kiss that monthly bill goodbye. I have since given one to my father and my sister.

I got my Magic Jack from a hooker. It worked GREAT! She had me up and running in no time! I wanted to plug it into her USB port but was afraid I might download a virus. Anyway, my unit works just fine... so if any of you unsatisfied users out there want to give me a Magic Jack, I'll take it!

I've been using Magic Jack for about six months and it is awesome. Technically, I think Skype (www.Skype.com) is better but that's a whole $38 per year to call regular phones. Skype to Skype is free. The thing I like about Magic Jack is that you can just plug a regular phone into it. By the way, Skype is software only (plus headsets). The hardware that comes with Magic Jack eats up one USB port (two if you forget to bring the extension cord that they provide.

I had the same problem. I don't think they have a RMA system. They want you to jack with them until you've used up your free trial time, then they charge your account saying you failed to return the product during the free trial time.
