Dan Patrick spending lots of time on PHX/Spurs. Had a good interview with an objective take from a guy from AZRepublic.

Poll going on now with who had better career, Duncan or Shaq.

Hate to say it, but they've both had awesome careers. Shaq's taken three different teams to the Finals and won four Championships and three Finals MVPs. Duncan has four Championships and three Finals MVPs. Couldn't really be closer could it?

Shaq's fourth le was as a role player in a series where his teammate was clearly the most dominant player in the entire NBA for a while.

Duncan has been and is the #1 man on his team. He remains that to this day. Shaq isn't even the second scoring option on the Suns. If the Spurs win this series, I don't see how you could say Shaq, who just QUIT on the Heat in the playoffs last year, has had a better career. Duncan has never, ever, EVER been dominated like that before. His team has been beat in the past, but he has always done his part. Shaq just quits.

Career Playoff Records: (through game 1 vs Suns)

    Duncan 92 wins, 47 losses

    Shaq 121 wins, 78 losses

Using the 2W-L formula, Duncan has 137 points and Shaq has 164 points.

Shaq is 27 points ahead of Duncan, but Shaq has played five more seasons and is five years older. Duncan seems certain to pass Shaq, and can tie Shaq if the Spurs finish the playoffs 15-3.

I know everybody at ESPN sucks, but Dan Patrick is the least stupid of them.

Last year, during the Finals, he said: " if the Spurs played in L.A or N.Y, they would be much more popular "...or something like that

I thought it was funny when Snaq Food compared Penny, Kobe, and Wade to the three sons of Don Corleone. I wonder who Amare is now that he has run out "Godfather" characters. Maybe he is the sister that was always getting a beat down.

And the Mavs who basically handed that le to them. Shaq had very little to do with that one, other than being on the floor.

Duncan's prime years were longer than Shaq's prime years. Plus less headache and bull along the way.

It is very close. Very, very close. If I had to say, I'd say Shaq right now. Duncan still has 3-4 good years left in him though, while Shaq has 1 more. By the end of their careers, I might say Duncan.

I think the thing that gets lost in this debate is that Tim hasn't truly had an MVP-level sidekick during his championship years with the Spurs. David Robinson finished 7th in the MVP voting in 1997-98, 12th in 1998-99, and 10th in 2000-01; Tony Parker finished 8th in 2005-06 and 15th in 2006-07.

Meanwhile, Shaq has regularly had teammates finish in the top 12 in MVP voting virtually every year of his career: Penny Hardaway (10th in 94-95 and 3rd in 95-96); Kobe Bryant (12th in 99-00, 9th in 00-01, 5th in 01-02, 3rd in 02-03, 5th in 03-04); and Dwyane Wade (8th in 04-05, 6th in 05-06, and 12th in 06-07).

Shaq's team accomplishments ( les and deep playoff runs) came with at least one really, really good sidekick available. That's borne out by more than just the MVP voting, too. Tim Duncan has had 1 teammate (Robinson) ever voted to any of the All-NBA teams (Robinson was 2nd team in 97-98, and 3rd team in 99-00 and in 00-01). By contrast, Shaq has had a teammate make one of those teams in virtually every season in which he played -- and many times has played with an All-League (1st Team All-NBA) player at his side: Penny Hardaway (1st team 94-95 and 95-96); Kobe Bryant (2nd team in 99-00 and 00-01, 1st team in 01-02, 02-03, and 03-04); Dwyane Wade (2nd team in 04-05 and 05-06 and 3rd team in 06-07).

Sure, Shaq has something to do with those players performing at high levels -- though I will note that Penny Hardaway was 3rd team All-NBA in the season after Shaq left Orlando and Kobe Bryant has had 2 first team selections and 1 third team selection since Shaq left LA; it's not as if the performance of those players was entirely about Shaq's presence.

I think the disparity in sidekicks is a point in favor of Duncan's individual greatness, but I'm just a biased Spurs fan.

Shaq was obviously the more dominant of the 2..Shaq's peak is probably in the top 3-5 in NBA history..but as for the careers, it's really close..Duncan's prime has been longer and is continuing right now..he should be able to rack up a few more all-NBA teams in the next few years..

defensively, Duncan has been easily superior to Shaq..no argument here..

Duncan has never had a teammate as good as Kobe or Wade, both of them top 3-5 players in the NBA at the time..

Duncan should also get credit for his maturity and unselfishness, while Shaq has been immature and calls out his former teams every chance he gets..
