Hagee: NOLA punished for 'sinful conduct'
    Posted April 23, 2008 3:43 PM
    by Mark Silva

The Rev. John Hagee, the one who told National Public Radio some time back that Hurricane Katrina was God's way of punishing the city of New Orleans for celebrating sexuality, was asked again this week if he stands by that judgment.

On the radio, conservative talk show host Dennis Prager asked Hagee about it, and the Center for American Progress is only too happy today to report what Hagee, one of Sen. John McCain's supporters, had to say in response. (McCain has said that he does not agree with everything Hagee stands for, but hasn't renounced his endorsement.)

"What happened in New Orleans looked like the curse of God,'' Hagee told Prager. "In time, if New Orleans recovers and becomes the pristine city it can become, it may in time be called a blessing. But at this time it's called a curse.''

A gay pride parade had been planned in the city, Hagee explained. "In the case of New Orleans, their plan to have that sexual rally was sin. But it never happened. The rally never happened.''

But, Prager asked, "In the case of New Orleans, you do feel that God's hand was in it because of a sinful city?

"That it was a city that was planning a sinful conduct,'' said Hagee. "Yes.''

Prager apparently never asked why the coasts of Louisiana and Mississippi got blasted in the bargain. And Hagee didn't explain.

I wonder if the M$M will latch on to these Hagee comments with the same intensity they latched onto the politically-spun Wright comments....though I won't hold my breath...

Umm ... hate to bust the hate-fest, but Hagee does not = Wright. While they have both criticized America at times, the similarity ends there.

    Some points to consider ....

First of all, Hagee was speaking in an isolated context about Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans, whereas Wright, I understand, speaks generally about America almost every week. In fact, I'll go on record to say that he (Hagee) put his foot in his mouth, as did a couple of other preachers in the days after the storm. I understand that they repented of what they said, and I'm sure they were sincere. On the other hand, the press is known for taking sound bites and quoting them entirely out of context, as they did with the president of our esteemed seminary in New Orleans, Dr. Chuck Kelley. So we should at least be willing to consider the context of Wright, Hagee, and pretty much anyone.

Second, their ministries differ greatly. Hagee is an evangelical preacher who tends to emphasize prophecy, Israel, and (to his detriment) a prosperity message. I am not a fan of his. To him, America has gone wrong by allowing the family to break down, by allowing Christianity to be out aside in favor of secular humanism, by going along with the gay agenda, and by not fully supporting Israel. I'm not saying I agree with him, but his loyalty to America is unquestioned. So, when he said God was punishing New Orleans, he meant it more in the sense that it allowed sin in its midst, which is a completely different message than what Wright was saying.

Wright's ministry, I understand, is primarily about achieving social and economic equality. Like most liberal ministers, there is much less teaching about sin and the need to repent of it. When sin is brought up, it is equated to being uncompassionate, inequitable, racist, etc. America's sin, to him, is inequality and injustice engendered by racism. Does it exist in America? You bet. Is it the defining characteristic of America? To Wright it is. And so his message is much different than Hagee.

And lastly, McCain is not a 20-year parishioner of Cornerstone Church (Hagee's ministry). In fact, we don't know much about McCain's religion. Wake me up when McCain's pastor and spiritual adviser says something foolish and disloyal.

Not really Ayers is like a badge on Obama's chest. He is
an asset. I mean like he really does support the Socialist
and hates anything American. What more could people

McFlopPander's war injuries, advancd age, physical decrepitude don't appear to prevent him from getting on his belly and pandering to the "religious" radicals like Hagee, Parsely, Roberson who control the Repug party.

And another totally irrelevant side issue. I expect the MSM corps not to run with this kind of stuff on their candidate McFlopPander.

Your right, because Obama has denounced Wright comments, even though they were taken out of context by the lazy M$M, while still calling Wright his friend, meanwhile, McCain has neither denounced nor distanced himself from Hagee or his remarks about the U.S. and Christians...but keep up the double standards...

Robertson has lost all respect for me, and I think other people are beginning to feel the same. He seems to keep doing whatever is politically expedient, and not sticking to his guns.

I've never been a huge fan of Robertson. I'm sure he's a good man, decent enough, but he does have a penchant for saying dumb things at the worst possible time. And he comes off as creepy on camera. I'm also worried that he, like many evangelicals, tends to confuse the ins utions of church and state.

That said, his loyalty to America has never been questioned. Ought that not be one of the top qualifications for American public office, so obvious that it need not be listed? That's what bothers me most about Obama's associations -- there is ample reason to question their loyalty. And it's not like Obama has tried that hard to disown these people.

....typical fire and brim-stone, you could say even Hagee-like sermon, but hardly anti-American or racist...

    Ok...let's.....go......slow......

Hagee is not McCain's friend. Hagee is not McCain's pastor. There's no history between McCain and Hagee while there is one between Wright and Obama.

You are making a very poor comparison between Wright and Hagee. McCain should tell Hagee to take a hike though.

But, both are nutbars....and Hagee is particularly de able.

Well, I don't think that McCain is a member of Hagees money maker that passes as a church.

Same can't be said as to Obama and Wright.

Personally I think Hagee is above all a scam artist. But that is another story.
