It doesn't matter if our PG is Kidd or Devin in this series when our "2nd-best" player is shooting 28% from the floor and exhibiting terrible shot selection.
I'll put it this way: point guard wasn't exactly the biggest weakness on the team. I think Jason Kidd has something still left in the tank, but you have to run to get the best results from him, and this team doesn't do that.
I wouldn't have made the trade myself, but I didn't think we were going to win a le as is, so I was fine with it up to a certain point. Dirk has certainly played better since Kidd arrived, but the results speak for themselves: a 57-win pace when the trade was made, a 42-win pace afterwards. The biggest weaknesses this team had before the trade was lack of post-scoring and lack of scoring from the two guard, along with weak coaching. The trade really didn't address any of those areas.
Your trade chips are Josh Howard, Brandon Bass and Kidd's expiring contract. Maybe they can turn that into something good this summer, but I won't hold my breath. Our status as an elite team has come to an end. If all you do is change coaches and bring the same team back next year, they'll be fighting with Golden State and Portland for the 8 seed.

Trade Howard for Jason Richardson.
Howard clearly wants out, and wants to go back to NC.
Apparently the Bobcats are not extremely happy with the production that Richardson gave them.
Richardson always hits open 3s, and is athletic out of this world, and doesnt need to dominate the ball to get his points, but can still score lots of points effectively and consistently... exactly what we need.
I would do anything to get him here, and get Howard the out of Dallas.
The trade was necessary. The team was stagnant and Dirk was looking completely unmotivated.
Unfortunately, Avery & Kidd are like gasoline & water. And to be honest, Kidd isn't providing the leadership & mental toughness I thought he would. It appears the Mavs scared, timid at ude has rubbed off on him instead.
The Mavericks had to do something, and I applaud them for having the balls to make a big trade. It's just too bad that Smokey went to & their head coach went braindead.
Blow the entire team up and start over. Giving Dirk/Kidd another shot will not amount to a le. Just blow it up now and maybe you can get Michael Beasley or Derrick Rose. Get rid of the big contracts and maybe you can sign Kevin Durant when his rookie contract is up.
Why not just trade for the whole 2006-2007 GS Warrior team, so then they can never get into the way of the Mavs?

I mean, Kidd made a play on the ball with his right hand, while simultaneously throwing Pargo down with his left hand. In any case, I wouldn't see why Kidd is punished any less than Stack.
