Suns coach Mike D'Antoni has been granted permission to speak with NBA teams, including the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks, according to Sports 620 KTAR's Paul Calvisi.
D'Antoni was previously denied permission to speak with any team, Suns GM Steve Kerr told KTAR last week.
Kerr and owner Robert Sarver met with D'Antoni for a lunch meeting on Friday to discuss his future with Phoenix, but it was reported a decision would not be made until later in the week.
ESPN.com reported Friday that Chicago has emerged as the most likely landing spot for D'Antoni if he leaves Phoenix.
Bulls management contacted D'Antoni's agent last week, according to sources close to the subject.
D'Antoni, who has two years and $8.5 million left on his contract, would likely have to resign if he departed for Chicago.
Kerr told ESPN.com on Thursday that recent suggestions he would be a candidate to replace D'Antoni are completely untrue, reiterating his long-held stance that he wouldn't even consider coaching until his children are out of school.
ESPN.com contributed to this report.
Because if he resigns they save $8.5MM?
Am I right?
spurm, you are correct sir.
But if they fire him and he takes another job, doesn't that release them from their financial obligation? That's how it is with Avery and the Mavs - Cuban is on the hook to pay him the rest of his guaranteed contract unless he takes another job, which he probably will with his W-L record.
I'm sure contracts vary from coach to coach, as they do from player to player.
Got ya Dead man Walkin![]()
no aj was fired
cuban has to pay him no matter what!
if they fire him, they have to pay him. some coaches have guaranteed money, others don't. his was.
the way Avery's contract is structured, he doesn't get the $12 million severance if he takes another coaching job within the next two years, it's written so that that provision gets voided.
Uh, no, it's just a simple non-compete clause. Avery agreed to it.
But this is Spurstalk of course, so Mark Cuban is worse than bin Laden.
Please God, do not let him coach the Knicks!!!! Haven't we New Yorkers suffered enough with Isaiah??
he couldn't do any worse.
Good riddance to D'Antoni.
Nash could be next.
There is no link for that latter statement.
Correct
Almost correct, he hasn't bombed any tall buildings yet. But in pure basketball terms this statement would be correct even if this wasn't ST.com.
I would imagine there are Suns fans lining up to help him pack.
So lets say a coach signs a 5 year 40 million dollar contract and decides to resign before the start of his full season, he still gets that $40 million without having to work, Well take a trip to mount rus re and call me Jefferson!!!!!!
If he is smart he just says..."I am committed to coaching the Suns" and forces Kerr's hand.
DD
DaDakota - some people are thinking that might be what he's going to do. he had interviews with the bulls and knicks today.
Well, he'll get the Bulls to the playoffs, which I guess is what they're paying him for. Not a good enough roster for him to be able to fail any expectations.
well, like 3 or 4 of the players on there are ones that he wanted for the suns, so with that and the dalai lama telling him that he'll reach consciousness when he dies.. he's got that going for him.
