Children born in the great Hoosier state come pre-programmed with more basketball knowledge than you possess. (In my day, you also left the hospital with your choice: either Led Zeppelin IV or Frampton Comes Alive! on 8-track, but that was the '70s.)

In today’s lesson I will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of some different defenses:

Man to Man – If run correctly it has the potential to be the best defense. Its not as much about guarding your man as it as about the help side D and rotations. If certain things are done correctly like backing into gaps, a good offense can be somewhat neutralized. Just like all defenses, a lot of communication is necessary. It can be hard to stay in man to man if a team is much quicker and the rotation is not quick enough.

2-3 zone or 2-1-2 zone: The most commonly used zone. It is susceptible to 3 pointers on the wing and top of the key. It is the best zone for blocking out and rebounding, because you have 3 players in or near the lane. The way to negate the 3 point shooting is to extend the zone and be more vulnerable near the basket.

1–2-2 or 3-2 zone: It is becoming more commonly seen as a change of pace D in the NBA. The susceptible part in this zone is obviously the middle of the lane. It is good against 3 point shooting teams because it allows you to extend the defense on the shooters. It is also susceptible if the offense works the ball into the corner and overloads one side. It is tough to rotate block to block since the bottom 2 guys are also responsible for the corners.

1-3-1 zone: Typically a trapping zone. It is not really used in the NBA. It is good for smaller scrappy teams trying to get steals. It is typically used against weak ball handling teams. It can be susceptible to open 3’s if the rotation is not quick enough. The traps are obviously the key to this defense. When trapping, some players have a tendency to give weak traps allowing the offensive player to split them and then you are beat. When trapping you want to mirror the ball and try and force a turnover.

Kori if you use this in one of your articles, I want some cash.

Are you actually trying to teach defensive basketball fans about defense?

No. The only thing you are doing is showing everyone just how much attention you need. It's sad really.

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams of five active players each try to score points against one another by propelling a ball through a 10 feet (3 m) high hoop (the goal) under organized rules. Basketball is one of the most popular and widely viewed sports in the world.

Points are scored by shooting the ball through the basket above; the team with more points at the end of the game wins. The ball can be advanced on the court by bouncing it (dribbling) or passing it between teammates. Disruptive physical contact (fouls) is not permitted and there are restrictions on how the ball can be handled (violations).

Through time, basketball has developed to involve common techniques of shooting, passing and dribbling, as well as players' positions, and offensive and defensive structures. Typically, the tallest members of a team will play center, the shortest member usually plays "point" while often the best ball handlers are guards. While compe ive basketball is carefully regulated, numerous variations of basketball have developed for casual play. In some countries, basketball is also a popular spectator sport.

While compe ive basketball is primarily an indoor sport, played on a basketball court, less regulated variations have become exceedingly popular as an outdoor sport among both inner city and rural groups.

    About Dribbling:

In basketball, dribbling is the legal method of advancing the ball by oneself, as opposed to passing it to another player or shooting for the basket. It consists of bouncing the ball on the floor continuously while walking or running down the court.

The original Naismith rules said nothing about dribbling, merely stating that passing the ball was the legal way of advancing it. Players soon developed the strategy of "passing to themselves", which James Naismith himself both endorsed and admired for its ingenuity, and which evolved into the dribble as it is known today.

The dribble allows for much faster advancement and thus more opportunities for scoring. It also provides an opportunity for a crafty player on the opposing team to "steal" the ball in mid-bounce. Once a player stops dribbling the ball and holds it, the player normally must either pass it to another player or take a shot; if the player dribbles and then holds the ball in any way (either grasping it with his hands or arms, or "palming" it, i.e. holding it too much toward its underside during the act of dribbling) then continues to dribble, then the referee stops the play, signals either "double dribble" or "carrying", and turns the ball over to the other team.

Skilled ball handlers bounce the ball low to the ground, reducing the risk of a defender reaching in to steal the ball. Adept dribblers can dribble behind their backs, between their legs and change hands without watching the ball, making the player difficult to defend and opening up options to pass, shoot or drive with the ball.

The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) was founded in 1927 to oppose a move to eliminate dribbling from the sport.

    Playing regulations

Games are played in four quarters of 10 (international) or 12 minutes (NBA). College games use two 20 minute halves while most high school games use eight minute quarters. Fifteen minutes are allowed for a half-time break, and two minutes are allowed at the other breaks. Overtime periods are five minutes long. Teams exchange baskets for the second half. The time allowed is actual playing time; the clock is stopped while the play is not active. Therefore, games generally take much longer to complete than the allotted game time, typically about two hours.

Five players from each team (out of a twelve player roster) may be on the court at one time. Subs utions are unlimited but can only be done when play is stopped. Teams also have a coach, who oversees the development and strategies of the team, and other team personnel such as assistant coaches, managers, statisticians, doctors and trainers.

For both men's and women's teams, a standard uniform consists of a pair of shorts and a jersey with a clearly visible number, unique within the team, printed on both the front and back. Players wear high-top sneakers that provide extra ankle support. Typically, team names, players' names and, outside of North America, sponsors are printed on the uniforms.

A limited number of time-outs, clock stoppages requested by a coach for a short meeting with the players, are allowed. They generally last no longer than one minute unless, for televised games, a commercial break is needed.

The game is controlled by the officials consisting of the referee ("crew chief" in men's college and the NBA), one or two umpires ("referees" in men's college and the NBA) and the table officials. For college, the NBA, and many high schools, there are a total of three referees on the court. The table officials are responsible for keeping track of each teams scoring, timekeeping, individual and team fouls, player subs utions, team possession arrow, and the shot clock.

Nothing you've posted has convinced me you know about basketball. You just copy and paste. You've yet to engage in any true debate about the series or breakdown any games. Talk about a joke of a troll poster.

    1-2-2 Zone Defense

    Strengths
The 1-2-2 zone has the advantages of being able to pressure the ball on the outside arc, allow for some trapping, and can be effective against a good outside shooting team (whereas the 2-3 zone is more effective against inside scoring).

    Weaknesses
The major weaknesses are the (1) high post area, and (2) this defense can be attacked from the corners. Study the diagrams to understand how the zone shifts, or moves, and see the animation also.

Do you need attention so badly that you must cut and paste a summary of basic basketball defenses from any old web site? You should have the decency to at least credit the source from which you paraphrased.
