PORTLAND, Ore. - Some 75,000 people have turned out to see Barack Obama speak along the Portland waterfront, a record for the campaign.
The crowd covers the lawn here at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, from the streetside entry gates down to the Willamette River. Portland fire officials estimate 60,000 people are packed inside the park proper and another 10-15,000 are watching outside the gates. Spectators are lining the bridge behind Obama and watching, bikini-clad, from boats on the river.
The stump speech is Obama's standard riff - 30 minutes long and counting now, despite the sun beating down on the candidate. He's added a few Oregonian flourishes, drawing big cheers when he said the country can learn from Portland's commitment to mass transit and bicycle lanes. The biggest applause came when he denounced the Iraq war; Oregon is a hotbed of anti-war activism.
At one point, someone in the crowd shouted an expression of love at Obama. He broke his speech for a moment: "I love you too," he said.
"If you vote for me on Tuesday," he said, "We won't just win Oregon. We'll win this nomination, we'll win this general election. And you and I together, we'll change this country, we'll change the world."
Seventy-five thousand people seemed to like the sound of that.
My God. If they really had that many people, what a disgusting mess.
Waterfront park isn't very big. I don't know about you all, but to be packed like sardenes is not for me.
Pretty impressive.
Still don't know what the appeal is.
I assume he got to the stage by walking across the water.
"a disgusting mess"
typical conservative position towards all democracy, and specifically freedom of association.
He's a great orator, it will be interesting to see if he can get by on that in the general election or if McCain will actually make him talk facts (and if McCain does, if the liberal media will be quick to play the race card).
Have you ever been there to where they had it, you nitwit? As has been mentioned, it's not exactly 'roomy'.
Look at all those appeasers~

me>74000
And I haven't decided who to vote for
Are these the same facts that McCain can't seem to get right?
Dude, anyone who believes McCain has any chance in is really really pushing it. Barring anything crazy, He's going to lose in a landslide.
BTW if anyone wants to wager on the general I welcome bets. Let me know.
Sweet pic Train.....some people never made in into the partk

The country that voted for Bush, TWICE!Anything can happen. Hopefully McCain doesn't win. I don't know if I can take 4 more years of Bush.
Why do you vote for people who speak in vague generalities?
There are no good candidates. I was hoping Bob Barr would be someone I could vote for, but he doesn't have the right stance for me to support him either. I think I will end up voting for him anyway. If I don't, I'm looking at either writing in "Mitt Romnrey" or "Micky Mouse." Unless McCain chooses a VP I really like, I cannot vote for any him, or the winning demonrat.
WC, you self-congratulating, preening, condescending .
"democracy is messy", stick it up your ass. It's Good For Ya.
If Obama is so bad, what's McFlopPanderKeating?
Obama as the non-Repug candidate, is what nearly every Obama supporter is reaching for.
The owners of the USA aren't worried about Obama. They'll kneecap Obama and the Dems after the election, if not before. NOBODY touches their cheese, and lives.
psssssssssssst. bush isn't on the ticket
that's what he's betting on
Generalities are not always bad. No one has any clue where the country will be 5 years from now so how can be sure that details promised in a campaign will be relevant or even possible in the future. For example, Congress and their laundry list they planned to complete within a # of hours and didn't. All candidates can offer, for many but not all topics, is a direction they would like to head in.
Generalities, on the other hand, can be bad when it comes to forms of foreign policy.
Obama has addressed specifics I am worried about and that's why I will vote for him in November.
If he hasn't addressed the specifics you are worried about then don't vote for him. That's why we have this campaign process. Also if there are certain worries that you have please post them. I'm are willing to listen to worries you have because I may have simply overlooked them and they could potentially matter to me too. That is one of the reasons why we have political forums.
All hail the Messiah!!
Hope! And, um, change!
A critique of the second image ...

CRITIQUE: First reaction was that this looked like something from a Jehovah's witness "The Watchtower" cover (those brochures that they pass out for a quarter) ... has this religious feel to it. It's more like he's doing a Superman stance. Maybe they should have put the "S" shirt under his jacket with the cap. That would have gotten the effect, but maybe taken as more of an insult than an endorsement. I don't really care for the fonts but I see it's their standard serif font. It looks more like The New Republic or The Week instead of Rolling Stone.
