Actually, if I were you - Look into the Vostro line (small-business) and get the 1520. You can check NotebookReview for Dell coupons and get % off, and go with the Vostro. Probably the best "budget" gaming notebook.

Definitely a good deal. You can customize it to get stuff like good video cards and even Windows XP. I'm very close to picking one up.

You can get a better notebook for the money, and run OSX on it with a little know-how.

Try to avoid Vista. At least check if XP drivers are available for the notebook you're buying. In the last month I had to downgrade 2 notebooks (a VAIO and a DELL) from Vista because their were just too many problems with them (performance!).

It was fairly easy with the DELL and a nightmare with the VAIO.

Another interesting tidbit is that you can use the Vista code as a valid code when installing XP, provided you have a vista pro version or better. (not sure about the versions, but there's some sort of cut off) So checking that info is also probably smart (you can downgrade to XP and eventually go back to Vista - if they ever fix it)

I know all about Hackintosh, but the problem with that thing, is that, it'll give you a hard time updating your OS. Plus, a part of a Mac's desirability comes from the product design. Why would you want to throw that out?

the video cards on macbooks are . macbook pro, probably OK, but not a macbook. there are some pretty ridiculous HP gaming laptops out there for around $1100 as well.

If you can, get a laptop with upgradeable parts. It's a shame that laptops nowadays generally cannot be upgraded in any area but RAM unless you're a real expert. Some laptops like the later Dell Inspirons I hear have graphics cards that can be upgraded.

And this reminds me, that would be cool if ST got some kind of marketplace board or something.
