If only Quenton Ross had more of an offensive game. He has the potential to evolve into a Bruce Bown prototype, minus the long range touch, but we need more offense from the 2-guard spot.
The only UNrestricted Free Agents even worth considering:
totally unrestricted, no player/team/early termination options:
Eddie House
Jamaal Magloire
Eduardo Najera
Theo Ratliff
Mickael Pietrus
Quinton Ross
Bostjan Nachbar
Carlos Arroyo
Michael Finley
Kurt Thomas
Primoz Brezec
Antawn Jamison
I figure Horry, Damon, and DeMarr will not be back. Barry and Vaughn will be back with player options. So that leaves 3 open roster spots.
Considering the front courts that are being assembled in the West, the Spurs probably need to lean that way......leaving the backup PG spot up to Vaughn alone, and in crunch time, Manu and Barry can handle it. I think Damon proved it's not worth carrying another PG on the roster, except you might need somebody to run scout team PG in practice.
I think the most realistic signings from this list are bringing back Thomas and Finley, and bringing in Najera and Pietrus.
Najera is a hustling machine, gets under your skin, rebounds, plays D, and has developed an outside shot.
Pietrus would provide more athleticism & scoring on the wing, and can shoot the 3.
Finley's shot is so pretty, how can you say no to that ?
Thomas just needs more time to gel with the team.
That leaves this roster:
5/4 - Duncan, Thomas, Oberto, Mahinmi, Bonner, Najera
3 - Bowen, Udoka, Pietrus
2 - Ginobili, Barry, Finley
1 - Parker, Vaughn
that leaves 1 open spot for the first round draft pick / D-League player.
Everyone on here is dreaming of some big free agent signing or trade, but this is a much more realistic scenario, and what I think would be another solid Spurs team once again challenging for the le in 2009. Go Spurs Go !!!
If only Quenton Ross had more of an offensive game. He has the potential to evolve into a Bruce Bown prototype, minus the long range touch, but we need more offense from the 2-guard spot.
good take, i'd love to have najera on the team, he's one of those guy's u hate when he's on the opposing team but a guy you'd love to have. plays D, get's in the head of his opponents.
and Pietrus to me would be a younger Finley, great shooting skills.
i think finley needs to go and forget najera. i like pietrus but instead of najera i like azabuike, james jones, rj smith, or quinton ross
Didn't Najera develop a 3-ball this year?
i like azbuike better and rj smith too, even though he is kinda immature. but he can sure help us score when our other guys cant
good point pargo is another good option at the same time duhon would be good too
Najera is 31 and not terribly athletic, but he's a scrappy player with a decent J. He'd probably be amenable to a two-year deal with a third-year option.
The other guy is Pietrus, but I think he's going to be in high demand because he's one of the few young players with completely "unrestricted" status, so teams won't feel like they have to overpay. I expect the Spurs to be in the bidding, but I'm not sure they win out.
if that is the case then i would expect SA to be #1 on his list, we need a young athletic guy just like him and we will be contending for a le, how could he turn that down?
Yes he did. I was quite shocked when I saw him nail a couple of 3-balls during a game versus the Mavs earlier this season
Of those, I only like Quinton Ross, Carlos Arroyo, and Kurt Thomas.
He only named the totally unrestricteds. Theres much more options than those
I'd be very happy if the Spurs could nab both Pietrus and Najera. Couple that with the drafting of a young SG like Rush, Bantum or Lee and that goes a long way toward filling a couple of holes.
I say Pietrus and Azbuike or Ricky davis not najera
How many decent or better "restricted" FAs ever go anywhere. Seems like it never happens. New teams don't want to waste their time, RFA stands by waiting, owning team just waits for everyone to be scared off and get their guy for a decent price usually.
And trades, when was the last time we made a trade in the offseason?
This might be new days with the level of compe ion in the West now. Maybe a new era of front office movement and activity is upon us because we are in the home stretch of the TD era. But I'll believe it when I see it.
its worth the try anyways. i can see the warriors giving up azbuike and i can also see the heat giving up ricky davis. he didnt play to well there
Antawn Jamison would be the perfect small ball player, too bad it will never happen.
I would take Pietrus. Athletic, can hit the 3, and play D. Plus he has to fellow Frenchmen on the team in Parker and Mahinmi.
don't we already have a white hustle guy with a 3-ball (Bonner)?
Even if we do draft a PG and/or a swingman, I say we should still get both in the free agent market. If we keep Jacque, then off goes the PG possibility through free agency.
If the Spurs went after Najera it would spell the end for Bonner. Dude showed some guts and decent range, but he was buried at the end of the bench with Pop trusting a 36yr old dude who was shooting 20%.
I just don't see how Bonner fits long-term. I think they'll "Butler" him and look to package a late pick just to get rid of his salary.
Speaking of Mickael Pietrs, I didn't follow GSW much at all this year. Moreso last year when they were fun and exciting and fresh and Nellie was destined to upset the Mavs.![]()
But just looking at his stats, can someone explain the following:
1) Why did his FG% drop so much this year versus last year? Which player is he? The 49% FG guy from the previous year, or the guy who in a contract year dropped to 43%?
2) I keep hearing he can play D and shoot the 3, something I recall from previous year and agreed with. But his career avg is 35% from back there, including 36% this year. That's not even considered "good" IMO. Usually closer to 40% minimum for me really.
3) His mins dropped big time this year, from 27 to 20 mpg. Who took his mins and why?
4) What kind of player can he guard better than the guys we have already (Bowen, Udoka).
We could still get Duhon or Pargo even if Jacque stays
