Bidets were developed in the 19th century in Europe (probably France), primarily as a tool for cleansing during operations or ailments. The word "bidet", pronounced "bee-day", is French for "small horse", and the name stuck due to the device's apparent resemblance to a pony - the original bidet was a simple container resting on a wooden stool.

While once considered to be a luxury item, bidets now serve as a useful medical and personal therapy tool for people who have undergone surgery, childbirth, or suffer from hemorrhoid inflammation. Bidets provide a clean, hygienic and gentle way to personal cleansing without the need to use abrasive toilet papers.

Finding a bidet that suits your lifestyle and indeed your bathroom is now quite easy, with its growing popularity, various styles adaptable components. When selecting the bidet that is suitable, consider the environment where you will install the bidet. If your bathroom is small, a small bidet shower head may be more suitable than a large bidet toilet or toilet seat attachment. However, if you desire a more luxurious bidet then you can purchase a toilet attachment. These attach to your existing toilet combining comfort with practicality.

If you are building a new bathroom and are looking to install a new bidet, a bidet toilet may be the best choice. These combination bidets are space saving because they double as toilets, while also providing the comforts of the traditional, water-only bidet. Someone manufacturers, such as BioBidet, even have bidets that simply attach to your existing toilet.

If you are considering a bidet for your existing or new bathroom then speak with your plumber or check out the Internet. There are many online supplies who offer bathroom facilities at well below retail prices. Some online suppliers also offer interactive programs that allow you to redesign your bathroom at the touch of a button.

Please see Howard Richman’s powerful music to help release anger.

1 Give Yourself Permission to Express Anger.

Our society does not allow us to express strong emotions. We are taught to hold in our emotions from the earliest age. This can have a profoundly negative effect on our overall health. It’s not wrong to express anger, fear, sadness, rage. In fact, it is healthy to release these emotions regularly. What’s wrong is when we hurt someone in the process. It is preferable to find safe ways to dump the negative feelings.

2 Combine Mental and Physical Effort.

Mental therapy alone may be extremely helpful for anger release, but it can only take you so far. Similarly, the physical act of doing exercise can help many people let off steam, but it may not remove deep-seated anger.

The most effective process is when you can combine both the mental and physical effort. This is when you do a particular physical activity along with the mental intention of releasing the anger. Please see the next step for specific examples of how to combine the mental and physical effort to help release your anger. In each example, don’t just pound pillows, or rip paper, but REALLY FEEL the heavy anger emotion with it’s full intensity WHILE you do the physical activity. This is so important and will assist you to finally RELEASE the anger energy so that it won’t come back. You may have to do the process repeatedly because it releases layer by layer and it is doubtful that you will get to all of it in one session. There are many studies recently showing that doing this type of activity could possibly MAKE someone more aggressive. This is a complicated issue. Let’s say that the type of people who hold in their anger their whole life NEED to learn to become more aggressive in order to become balanced. It is important to learn how to not be a doormat and have people walk all over you. It is important to speak up for what you believe and not take garbage from everyone. So, indeed, if this behavior makes a person RELATIVELY more aggressive, it is in the vein of becoming whole, and that is a good thing! However, please realize if you are already an explosive person who throws temper tantrums and becomes violent, then this approach is NOT appropriate! This recommendation is more appropriate for the “quiet anger” that a person keeps inside for many years. This is the anger that causes physical illnesses, sleep disturbances and other stress-related conditions. Getting the anger out in these cases is extremely therapeutic.

3 Never Hurt Others in the Process.

Give yourself the opportunity to express anger in a safe way, without hurting anyone else. Most people will benefit by having a private room to pound pillows with their fists or legs, or with a plastic bat. Some people may prefer ripping pages of paper, screaming, throwing plates (old ones). Many people find it helpful to use anger-release music as a stimulus or catalyst for this process. Remember, NEVER hurt yourself in the process and never aim your anger literally at another person. What is important here is your expression of the negative emotion, NOT who receives it. If the anger (or other emotion) is traced to a specific individual, some people have found it helpful to have a symbol of this person at which they can direct the anger. This could be an enlarged photocopy of a photo on a piece of paper which you then scribble-over, tear, burn, or otherwise destroy. Be open to discovering your own dynamic anger-release method.

4 Totally Let Go, Without Hesitation.

It is also important to suggest that if you feel the need to express yourself in any of these ways, that you either are totally alone so that you don’t feel inhibited, or that you are in the surroundings of a group of people who are supportive of this type of activity. If you don’t have a private room in your house, maybe you can find a secluded area, where no one will hear or see you — even the inside of your car may work. (Don’t do any of this while actually driving!)

    5 Strive to Forgive.

The final step in maintaining anger-release is to truly forgive the person who wronged you as well as to truly forgive yourself.

The ancient Egyptians invented the first disposable tampons made from softened papyrus. The ancient Greeks invented tampons made from lint wrapped around a small piece of wood, recorded in writing by Hippocrates in the fifth century B.C. Other materials used for the first tampons have included: wool, paper, vegetable fibers, sponges, grass, and later cotton.
In 1929, the modern tampon (with applicator) was first invented and patented by Doctor Earle Haas who wanted to invent a tampon that could be effectively mass produced. Earle Haas filed for his first tampon patent on November 19, 1931. His patent description was for a "catamenial device," derived from the Greek word for monthly. He later trademarked Tampax as the brandname for his tampon product.

Gertrude Tendrich founded the Tampax company for the mass production of tampons after buying the patent and trademark rights from Earle Haas.

    Nerf
It started with a dream - a dream of breaking one of the biggest no-no's in the world: No playing ball in the house. Inventor Reynolds Guyer (creator of Twister) had a means to attain that dream, and that means was polyurethane. From that synthetic foam came the first Nerf ball, and from that first Nerf ball came a line of balls, bows, bats and more that continues to expand today. Guyer's first Nerf ball rolled out to the public in 1969. With the promise that "You can't damage lamps or break windows. You can't hurt babies or old people" (and no, that's not a challenge!).

Nerf was safe enough for indoor play, but its squishy portability made it an ideal take-anywhere toy. By the end of its first year on the market, over 4 million Nerf balls had been sold, and a new toy superstar was born.

In the wake of the Space Race and moon madness, Nerf was nearly dubbed the "Moon Ball" by its inventor. In retrospect, the made-up word "Nerf" was a much better idea. The original ball would likely have been a success either way, but Nerf had bigger and better things in store than a single, smallish "Moon Ball."

Throughout the 1970's, the Nerf line expanded through nearly every sport involving a ball -soccer, golf, ping pong, baseball, basketball (the ever-popular Nerfoop) - and even a few with no ball relationship whatsoever (Frisbee, darts, etc.). But the jewel in the Nerf crown was clearly the Nerf Football. Debuting in 1972, this oblong mass of foam soon came to dominate backyard tackle ball, street ball, kill the man with the ball, and intramural flag football games everywhere.

While the Nerf Football continued its reign, over 50 new kinds of Nerf products were introduced in the 80s, including; Nerf Soccerball (1980); Nerf PingPong (1982); Nerf Boomerang (1983); Nerf Indoor Golf set (1986); and Nerf Blast-A-Ball (1989).

The balls were designed to be used indoors (as it would be nigh on impossible to actually break anything with a Nerf ball) but they were more often than not played with outside where they would invariably get waterlogged, filthy and chewed by dogs. In purple, orange or lime green, everything would stick to these balls - grime, fluff, cat hair, cats . . .

Starting with 1990's Blast-a-Ball, Nerf unleashed an assortment of toys that fired soft, safe projectiles at unsuspecting friends or family members. The Nerf Bow and Arrow was an early favourite, and the line has grown to encompass everything from Crossbows to Gatling-style rotating guns to the motorised "Ballzooka."

    TRIVIA NOTE
The Nerf Ball was used by astronauts on the space shuttle to demonstrate the effects of gravity and inertia.

    Sand blasting or Abrasive blasting

Sandblasting, bead blasting or abrasive blasting...Is it really the same thing? The short answer is yes! For many years the term sandblasting was used simply because the abrasive choice was sand. Well times have changed! We do not recommend using sand in any of our blasters.

An abrasive blaster works on the principle of high pressure compressed air being used to force a mix of air and fine abrasive through a nozzle. The abrasive particles will quickly remove paint, rust, corrosion, dirt, and discoloration from many different types of surfaces. Just as there are many surfaces to be cleaned there are many different types of abrasive materials that can be used.

Although there are many reasons, we believe there are three important reasons why we do not recommend the use of sand. The first reason is a health and safety concern. Sand contains silica which can cause serious respiratory illnesses. The use of a proper respirator with most abrasives will reduce your health risks. The second reason is due to the high moisture content and the impurities in sand. It can cause equipment blockages and other moisture related problems that can cause premature failure of your blast equipment. The third reason is sand just does not work as well as other abrasives. Sand used once in a blaster turns into a powder and loses its abrasive capabilities. Using the correct abrasive can make the job go quicker and using the right abrasive can give you a more desirable finish to the item you are blasting. Remember, time is money!

When choosing the right abrasive for the job, the size, hardness, mass, sharpness break down rate and reclaim capabilities should be considered.

We have gone as far as taking the words "sand blasting" our of our catalogs and other printed materials. One could argue that sand is plentiful and easy to find. Many users do not know there are other options to sand so they have never invested the time looking for anything else. Larger cities have multiple suppliers of abrasive for blasters. If you open your local phone book and look under sand blasting supplies you may be pleasantly surprised by what you find. For the computer user, a Google search of "abrasive supplies" may be very informative.

The following are a few common types of abrasives with some general recommendations for uses.

    Impaired Driving

    Overview

Alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes kill someone every 31 minutes and nonfatally injure someone every two minutes (NHTSA 2006). But there are effective measures that can be taken to prevent injuries and deaths from impaired driving.

    Occurrence and Consequences

During 2005, 16,885 people in the U.S. died in alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes, representing 39% of all traffic-related deaths (NHTSA 2006).

In 2005, nearly 1.4 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics (Department of Justice 2005). That’s less than one percent of the 159 million self-reported episodes of alcohol–impaired driving among U.S. adults each year (Quinlan et al. 2005).

Drugs other than alcohol (e.g., marijuana and cocaine) are involved in about 18% of motor vehicle driver deaths. These other drugs are generally used in combination with alcohol (Jones et al. 2003).

More than half of the 414 child passengers ages 14 and younger who died in alcohol-related crashes during 2005 were riding with the drinking driver (NHTSA 2006).

In 2005, 48 children age 14 years and younger who were killed as pedestrians or pedalcyclists were struck by impaired drivers (NHTSA 2006).
    Cost

Each year, alcohol-related crashes in the United States cost about $51 billion (Blincoe et al. 2002).

    Groups at Risk

Male drivers involved in fatal motor vehicle crashes are almost twice as likely as female drivers to be intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% or greater (NHTSA 2006). It is illegal to drive with a BAC of 0.08% or higher in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

At all levels of blood alcohol concentration, the risk of being involved in a crash is greater for young people than for older people (Zador et al. 2000). In 2005, 16% of drivers ages 16 to 20 who died in motor vehicle crashes had been drinking alcohol (NHTSA 2006).

Young men ages 18 to 20 (under the legal drinking age) reported driving while impaired more frequently than any other age group (Shults et al. 2002, Quinlan et al. 2005).

Among motorcycle drivers killed in fatal crashes, 30% have BACs of 0.08% or greater (Paulozzi et al. 2004).
    · Nearly half of the alcohol-impaired motorcyclists killed each year are age 40 or older, and motorcyclists ages 40 to 44 years have the highest percentage of fatalities with BACs of 0.08% or greater (Paulozzi et al. 2004).

Of the 1,946 traffic fatalities among children ages 0 to 14 years in 2005, 21% involved alcohol (NHTSA 2006b).

Among drivers involved in fatal crashes, those with BAC levels of 0.08% or higher were nine times more likely to have a prior conviction for driving while impaired (DWI) than were drivers who had not consumed alcohol (NHTSA 2006).
    Prevention Strategies

Effective measures to prevent injuries and deaths from impaired driving include:

Aggressively enforcing existing 0.08% BAC laws, minimum legal drinking age laws, and zero tolerance laws for drivers younger than 21 years old in all states (Shults et al. 2002, Quinlan et al. 2005).

Promptly suspending the driver's licenses of people who drive while intoxicated (DeJong et al. 1998).

Sobriety checkpoints (Elder et al. 2002).

Health promotion efforts that use an ecological framework to influence economic, organizational, policy, and school/community action (Howat et al. 2004; Hingson et al. 2006).

Multi-faceted community-based approaches to alcohol control and DUI prevention (Holder et al. 2000, DeJong et al. 1998).

Mandatory substance abuse assessment and treatment for driving-under-the-influence offenders (Wells-Parker et al. 1995).
    Other suggested measures include:

Reducing the legal limit for blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to 0.05% (Howat et al. 1991; National Committee on Injury Prevention and Control 1989).

Raising state and federal alcohol excise taxes (National Committee on Injury Prevention and Control 1989).

Implementing compulsory blood alcohol testing when traffic crashes result in injury(National Committee on Injury Prevention and Control 1989).

Actions to decrease alcohol-related fatal crashes involving young drivers have been effective

Over the past 20 years, alcohol-related fatal crash rates have decreased by 60 percent for drivers ages 16 to 17 years and 55 percent for drivers ages 18 to 20 years, according to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, this progress has stalled in the past few years. To further decrease alcohol-related fatal crashes among young drivers, communities need to implement and enforce strategies that are known to be effective, such as minimum legal drinking age laws and "zero tolerance" laws for drivers under 21 years of age.

    Sobriety checkpoints reduce alcohol-related crashes
Fewer alcohol-related crashes occur when sobriety checkpoints are implemented, according to a CDC report published in the December 2002 issue of Traffic Injury Prevention. Sobriety checkpoints are traffic stops where law enforcement officers systematically select drivers to assess their level of alcohol impairment. The goal of these interventions is to deter alcohol-impaired driving by increasing drivers’ perceived risk of arrest. The conclusion that they are effective in reducing alcohol-related crashes is based on a systematic review of research about sobriety checkpoints. The review was conducted by a team of experts led by CDC scientists, under the oversight of the Task Force on Community Preventive Services—a 15-member, non-federal group of leaders in various health-related fields. (Visit www.thecommunityguide.org for more information.) The review combined the results of 23 scientifically-sound studies from around the world. Results indicated that sobriety checkpoints consistently reduced alcohol-related crashes, typically by about 20 percent. The results were similar regardless of how the checkpoints were conducted, for short-term “blitzes,” or when checkpoints were used continuously for several years. This suggests that the effectiveness of checkpoints does not diminish over time.

Stronger state DUI prevention activities may reduce alcohol-impaired driving
Strong state activities designed to prevent driving under the influence (DUI), including legislation, enforcement, and education, may reduce the incidence of drinking and driving, according to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For the study, which was published in the June 2002 issue of Injury Prevention, CDC analyzed data from the 1997 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) national telephone survey, and the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Rating the States 2000 survey, that graded states on their DUI countermeasures from 1996-1999. Results showed that residents of states with a MADD grade of "D" were 60 percent more likely to report alcohol-impaired driving than were residents from states with a MADD grade of "A." MADD based the grades on 11 categories of prevention measures, including DUI legislation; political leadership; statistics and records availability; resources devoted to enforcing DUI laws; administrative penalties and criminal sanctions; regulatory control and alcohol availability; youth DUI legislation; prevention and education; and victim compensation and support.

The study also found that 4 percent of the residents who consume alcohol reported they had driven after having too much to drink at least once during the previous month. Men were nearly three times as likely as women to report alcohol-impaired driving, and single people were about 50 percent more likely to report alcohol-impaired driving than married people or those living with a partner.

Research identifies effective interventions against alcohol-impaired driving
CDC and the Task Force on Community Preventive Services—an independent, nonfederal panel of community health experts—published systematic reviews of the literature for eight community-based interventions to reduce alcohol-impaired driving. The reviews revealed strong evidence of effectiveness for 0.08% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) laws, minimum legal drinking age laws, sobriety checkpoints, and mass media campaigns (under certain conditions). They also found sufficient evidence of effectiveness for lower BAC laws specific to young or inexperienced drivers (zero tolerance laws), school-based education programs to reduce riding with a drinking driver, and intervention training programs for alcohol servers. They found insufficient evidence of effectiveness to recommend the use of designated driver programs.

The systematic review of the effectiveness of 0.08% BAC laws for drivers was helpful in establishing a 0.08% standard nationwide. The review revealed that state laws that lowered the illegal BAC for drivers from 0.10% to 0.08% reduced alcohol-related fatalities by a median of 7 percent, translating to 500 lives saved annually. With this evidence, the Task Force on Community Preventive Services strongly recommended that all states pass 0.08% BAC laws. In October 2000, the President signed the Fiscal Year 2001 transportation appropriations bill, requiring states to pass the 0.08% BAC law by October 2003 or risk losing federal highway construction funds. As of October 1, 2003, 45 states and the District of Columbia had enacted 0.08% BAC legislation.

In June 2001, Tommy G. Thompson, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded the Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service to the CDC researchers who conducted systematic reviews for their contribution to the field. In September 2006, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) presented the Ralph W. Hingson Research in Practice National President’s Award to the CDC research team to recognize their important contributions to reducing alcohol impaired driving.

As schools grapple with peanut-free lunch tables, children's food allergies are transforming the culture of parenting. Child investigates the new food fight.

    Life-Threatening Allergies
It was only two months after Daniel Clowes started half-day kindergarten at a Pennsylvania public school, and already some parents of his classmates were grumbling about his family. Daniel, 6, has life-threatening allergies to several foods, including milk, eggs, sesame, tree nuts, and peanuts, so the school—at the urging of Daniel's allergist—declared the class nut-free and issued a safe-snack list. After the Halloween party, when Daniel's father, John, personally inspected the goody bags prepared by parents to make sure no unapproved foods had made their way in, school officials told Gina Clowes, Daniel's mom, that a few parents had complained. "Why is it," they reportedly asked, "that one set of parents gets to dictate what the rest of the class does?"

"A lot of people just don't get it. They think you're a freaky mom who has food issues," says Jaleh Teymourian-Brahms, a Millburn, NJ, mom whose 2-year-old son, Miles, is allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, and eggs. She recently got into an argument with the manager of her health club after dropping Miles off in the "nut-free" childcare room and discovering that another child was eating peanut M&M's--which the manager had given him. "I told the manager, 'That M&M could kill my kid.' He just rolled his eyes," says Teymourian-Brahms, who promptly quit the club.

Across the country, such clashes are occurring with striking regularity and rancor in schools, at daycare centers, and even within families as the number of children believed to have potentially deadly food allergies is exploding. "I've heard patients say, 'We can't go to our aunt's house because she doesn't understand,'" says Connie Weil, Ph.D., a psychologist at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, who often treats allergic children and their parents. "It's a chronic illness, but it's a hidden illness, so it's misperceived by society."

    Cafeteria Clashes
Schools are declaring themselves nut-free, creating nut-free classes and lunch tables, or banning one childhood staple—peanut butter and jelly—altogether. Some enforce policies by inspecting lunch bags and asking parents to send in ingredient labels, prompting a backlash from those who see the measures as political correctness run amok or an overreaction by anxious parents.

Snarky comments about the "peanut police" pepper blogs and online message boards. "We are considering dressing our daughter on Halloween as 'The Death Peanut,'" one parent joked.

It's not unusual to hear about parents who have tried to sabotage food-allergy policies and children who have been teased or bullied by their nonallergic classmates. In fact, some parents of allergic children have filed civil rights complaints with the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), and in the last five years at least 14 of these cases against elementary and secondary schools have resulted in the department's issuing "resolution" letters that required a change in school policy, according to do***ents obtained by Child through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Saint Edward Elementary School, a Brockton, MA, private parochial school that receives federal funds and is associated with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, refused to admit an extremely peanut-allergic student into kindergarten, according to the do***ents and local news coverage. As part of the settlement, the school agreed, without admitting any fault, to amend its policies and to reimburse the family for the extra tuition it had paid at another school.

Two nut-allergic children in the Union County, NC, public schools were found by the DOE to have been harassed in separate incidents at Antioch Elementary School and Sun Valley Middle School. Among the shocking findings investigators do***ented: a parent of a nonallergic child announced at a PTO meeting that he'd continue sending his child to the elementary school with peanut butter sandwiches and tell his child to "smear" the peanut butter along the hallway walls.

At the middle school, a teacher brought in a homemade casserole containing nuts and invited the allergic boy to eat it; when he said he couldn't because of his allergies, she had him stand outside the classroom (in the cold) while the other students ate. This child was also taunted and bullied by other students in the cafeteria, including one who refused to move from a peanut-free lunch table and ate a peanut butter sandwich—which resulted in the boy's suffering an extreme allergic reaction that landed him in the hospital, the do***ents show. The schools, while not admitting fault, agreed to change their food-allergy policies, according to the settlement do***ents. A spokeswoman for the schools told Child these were isolated incidents and that they try to do right by every student.

    Baffling Unknowns
Fueling the discord are surprisingly large gaps in knowledge about food allergies, which is leading to mistrust and misunderstanding among parents and making living with this newly rampant childhood diagnosis a high-anxiety experience. How many children have food allergies? Are the numbers growing, and if so, why? How dangerous are these allergies? And what kinds of protections and policies are needed to keep children safe? None of these questions are easy to answer.

"This is a disease that hasn't been studied well. The science has to catch up," says Anne Munoz-Furlong, a leading authority and founder of the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN), a Fairfax, VA-based research and advocacy group.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration estimates that about 5% of children have food allergies (primarily to milk, eggs, peanuts, and tree nuts). Experts consider the data "soft" because some studies use small samples and others rely on self-reports

A much-cited 2003 study by Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and FAAN found that the number of children reporting peanut allergies had doubled between 1997 and 2002, from 1 in 250 to 1 in 125; the highest rate was for those 5 years old and under. The numbers, obtained through phone interviews, don't meet the gold standard of having been verified by medical tests. Still, studies that draw on reports from elementary schools and school nurses also suggest that the incidence of childhood food allergies is rising, as does a mountain of anecdotal evidence.

Reactions to food allergies can range from runny noses and rashes to anaphylactic shock, a severe reaction that can involve closing up of airways, a dramatic drop in blood pressure, and unconsciousness and can even lead to death. But diagnosing these allergies is surprisingly difficult. The blood and skin-prick tests that are widely used, for example, have false-positive rates as high as 50% (although negative test results are usually reliable). Allergies to nuts—especially peanuts—get the most attention and cause the most fear because research shows that they're the most deadly and persistent. A 2001 study of 32 deaths over five years from food-induced anaphylaxis found that tree nuts and peanuts were responsible for 94% of the fatalities—with peanuts the culprit in 63% of the cases.

Only about 20% of children are believed to outgrow peanut allergies, while about 85% have historically outgrown egg and milk allergies by age 5, according to Scott Sicherer, M.D., an associate professor of pediatrics at Mount Sinai and author of Understanding and Managing Your Child's Food Allergies. (Robert Wood, M.D., director of the Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore, notes, however, that his new research is indicating that milk and egg allergies are growing more stubborn, with "no more than 50%" of children outgrowing them.)

It's the risk of death, of course, that can send parents into paroxysms of fear, and the statistics on that are soft too. Research suggests that 20,000 to 30,000 Americans a year land in emergency rooms from food-induced anaphylaxis, though experts say the actual number is probably higher. An estimated 150 to 200 people die each year from it, but that number is an extrapolation from a small study using data two decades old in which researchers examined the medical records of 1,255 people in a Minnesota county and found one anaphylaxis death. Mortality records at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) list anaphylactic shock from an adverse food reaction as a factor in 12 deaths in 2004, the latest year with available data. But the CDC says it's hard to know if those numbers reflect the true situation or are due to underreporting by doctors and hospitals.

    Paranoid or Prudent?
Unless a child has already had an anaphylactic reaction to a food, the surest way to determine whether an allergy exists is to have what's called an oral challenge—in which the child is fed the suspected food under the supervision of a doctor. But this test sometimes is not given because of the fear of inducing a severe reaction. As a result, "some kids may be going through life thinking they'll keel over and die if they have a peanut, and it's not necessarily true," says Darshak Sanghavi, M.D., a University of Massachusetts Medical School assistant professor of pediatrics. In a column for The Boston Globe, he argued that the peanut allergy "epidemic" may be overblown. "There is a lot of fear-mongering and stoking of parents' anxieties," Dr. Sanghavi says.

In fact, the Canadian 15-year-old who was widely reported to have died after kissing a boy who'd eaten peanut butter ("Kiss of Death," screamed a People headline) had actually suc***bed to an asthma attack that led to "cerebral anoxia," a lack of oxygen to the brain, according to the Quebec coroner's report. "One needs to put anxiety about childhood food allergies into context, as part of the culture of fear in parenting today," Dr. Sanghavi says. "If it wasn't peanuts that were feared, it would be something else."

Among many allergy researchers and medical prac ioners, there's a recognition that some schools and parents are overreacting. There is some hysteria, acknowledges Dr. Wood, who, like many experts, calls the schoolwide bans of nuts unnecessary in upper elementary grades and beyond. Adds Dr. Weil: "I tell parents of allergic children they need to be realistically paranoid. There is a risk of being overprotective and over-cir***scribing kids' lives."

Yet food-allergic children and their parents are wrestling with some terrifying unknowns: There's no cure for food allergies and no sure way to predict the severity of a child's allergic reaction on any given day. Doctors say the best defense is to have children strictly avoid the allergen and have epinephrine on hand to administer quickly in case of a reaction. "With a food allergy, the onus is on the family to be on guard. If you make a mistake, someone in your family could die," says Munoz-Furlong of FAAN. "That's a tall order for anyone."

Researchers have just begun to study the psychological fallout, but the evidence that allergic children and families are hurting is startling. According to a 2003 study conducted by the University of Southampton in England, peanut-allergic children feel more restricted and more stressed in their daily lives than those with insulin-dependent diabetes. A 2000 Canadian study reported that children with peanut allergies have a lower quality of life than even those with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

It's also not unusual for children to develop peculiar eating habits or anxieties after a severe allergic reaction, especially if it landed them in the emergency room, says Munoz-Furlong. Additionally, "if a parent has read a label and the child eats the food and has a reaction, it's not uncommon for the child to no longer trust the parent to know how to take care of him."

Sometimes parents fare no better. A new study of 120 parents of allergic children conducted by the University of Derby in England found that 36% had high levels of depression and anxiety—more than people just diagnosed with cancer. "It's hard to relax," says Gina Clowes, who runs an online support group at allergymoms.com. "Food is everywhere. You always have to be careful."

    The Guardian Grind
Allergic children and their parents not only check the label of every food consumed, but they're also careful about where they dine, calling restaurant chefs ahead of time to see how food is prepared and asking hostesses not to serve the allergic food in their homes. Many also say they keep close tabs on their children, limiting playdates at friends' houses (because they don't trust other parents to be vigilant enough) and always volunteering to be the class parent to make sure treats for school parties are safe.

"I follow my daughter around like a hawk," admits Beth Gorab, a Wayne, NJ, mom whose 6-year-old, Casey, is allergic to milk, beef, pork, and lamb. Like many moms interviewed, she says she accompanies Casey to all her friends' birthday parties—with a dose of epinephrine, a bag of safe snacks, and wipes to clean tables, kids' faces, and hands. Gorab is frequently the only parent in attendance.

Denise Bunning is a Lake Forest, IL, mother of two food-allergic sons, ages 13 and 10, who had anaphylactic reactions, and is the co-founder of a nonprofit advocacy group, the Food Allergy Project. She says she came to lunch at her sons' elementary school every day until each in turn felt comfortable looking out for himself--and told her outright to stop.

Last January a federal law went into effect requiring manufacturers to specify on labels any major allergen, like nuts or milk, a food contains. This was designed to prevent people with allergies from accidentally eating unsafe foods, but the reality is that accidents can happen even under parents' watchful eyes. Teymourian-Brahms's son Miles had an allergic reaction at age 16 months when he took one bite of a bagel that his mom, Jaleh, bought at a store. "I had asked if the bagels had any egg or nut products in them, and what kind of oil they used, and if they fried the bagel in something, was it fried with eggs? But the knife had been used to cut something else, and I forgot to ask them to wash the knife," she says.

    Danger and Estrangement
A 1998 study by researchers at Mount Sinai and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock suggests that 55% of peanut-allergic children will suffer at least one reaction within a five-year period as a result of such accidental ingestions. Although the vast majority of reactions won't be life-threatening, the fact remains that any one of them could be. And a severe allergic reaction that goes untreated can swiftly kill a child. A 1992 study of 13 children who had severe food-allergic reactions found that receiving epinephrine within 30 minutes usually meant the difference between life and death.

Families of allergic children are sometimes stunned by the lack of understanding and sympathy from others. "Relatives that you thought would support you? Forget it," says Clowes. She says she had a "big fight and falling out" with some relatives after she and her family would not attend a large family celebration because it included "peanuts and potato chips fried in peanut oil. And the nearest doctor was going to be at least a half hour away," she says. "My husband and I discussed this, and we knew the stress would be too much."

Some marriages have been rocked by food allergies, too, as one parent sees the other as being too protective while that parent accuses the other of not being protective enough. "Someone should do a paper about the marital strife it causes," says Jane Benson, a Plymouth, MI, mother whose 16-year-old son, Paul, has peanut and tree nut allergies.

Socially, both allergic and nonallergic children are sometimes finding themselves in awkward and difficult predicaments. After St. Stephen's Preschool in Millburn, NJ, went nut-free in 2005, one parent sent his child to school with a "disguised" peanut butter sandwich, with peanut butter smeared only in the middle of the bread, according to Sheelagh C. Clarke, the preschool director. (Full disclosure: This writer had a child enrolled at the school at the time.) Aides found out after the child innocently announced that her father had told her not to tell anyone she was eating a peanut butter sandwich.

Bullying and teasing become issues especially for older kids, FAAN says. Two years ago, after peanut-free-zone signs went up in Paul Benson's high school, a student began calling Paul "Peanut Kid" and threatened to punch him. Then an editor at the school newspaper wrote an op-ed decrying the new policy and suggesting that allergic children should be home-schooled. "Paul felt like the whole school was against him," says Jane.

    School Rules
In fact, some parents say they don't like the idea of peanut-free lunch tables precisely because they think the arrangement can ostracize kids as they get older. Meanwhile, interviews suggest that a fear of severe inhalation and skin reactions is leading some schools and parents to isolate allergic children more than may be necessary.

Research shows that most allergic children probably wouldn't have severe reactions from air or skin contact with peanut butter, even though they might if they ate it. In a 2003 study led by Dr. Sicherer, 30 highly peanut-allergic children had a pea-size amount of peanut butter rubbed on their skin for a minute and sniffed peanut butter for 10 minutes; they also had the same tests with placebos. The result: not a single reaction that required any kind of treatment. A few of the children were red where rubbed. One had a reaction to the sniffed placebo—"probably a fear response," Dr. Sicherer says. The belief, he says, is that allergens are more likely to become airborne and cause reactions when food is powdery (bags of peanuts opened on a plane) or cooked (such as boiling milk or frying fish).

One reason some experts recommend nut-free classrooms for preschool and the early elementary grades is that young children often put their hands in their mouths. FAAN opposes schoolwide bans of any allergen, saying they can give a false sense of security because it's difficult to guarantee that no nut products make it into a school. There is no federal policy on what cons utes appropriate school responses, although a few states have developed voluntary guidelines. Doctors say parents of allergic children should ask their physician what makes sense for their child's age and allergic severity.

Meanwhile, allergic children and their parents continue to struggle to find a way to lead a safe life—without suc***bing to fear. It's a daunting challenge, given the paucity of conclusive research and the awful reality that one mistake could mean death.

After Paul Benson had allergic reactions in middle school that seemed to arise just from sitting near a classmate who was eating a peanut candy bar, his school banned peanut products from large areas of the school. When he enrolled in driver's education in high school, participants were forbidden to eat nut products in the car or in the waiting room, and the bowl of treats for student drivers was removed, says his mom Jane.

Paul's doctor told him inhalation reactions were rare and offered to give him a sniff test; Paul declined. He eats lunch with one friend in the teacher's lounge and hasn't been to a movie in more than four years. "The last time we went was at 10:30 a.m. so it wasn't crowded, and he was fine," says Jane. "But he said it made him nervous to think someone behind him might be eating a Reese's cup."

    A Fix in Five Years?
Right now the only "treatment" for food allergies is to have young children scrupulously avoid what they're allergic to and always keep a dose of epinephrine (discovered around 1900) handy in case they begin to stop breathing. But some new avenues of research show real promise. Doctors say that within the next five years any one of these approaches could yield a breakthrough:

    Immunotherapy for Food Allergies
Injecting food allergens is dangerous, and there are no allergy shots for food allergies like those for hay fever. But trials of oral and sublingual (under-the-tongue) immunotherapy are getting some good results at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, NC, and elsewhere. Young peanut-allergic children take a tiny amount of peanut powder (0.0003 of a peanut) to start, build up to a whole peanut, and then continue on a peanut a day. Some reactions occur, but by the time children reach a peanut a day their symptoms are largely gone.

    Bioengineered Proteins
Scientists at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and other research centers are taking the DNA that makes up the protein in peanuts and altering it to make a new, hypoallergenic protein that could switch off allergic reactions. So far, it's only worked with peanuts and only in animals, but human trials could start within about a year.

    Chinese Herbal Medicine
Remedies based on those that have been used for centuries in China are being submitted for FDA approval and are shortly expected to go into human trials at Mount Sinai, with participants taking tablets that include ingredients from roots and fruits. Because of herbal medicine's success in China (and in animal trials here), researchers suspect the tablets will largely block allergic symptoms.

    Anti-IgE Therapy
In this approach, already approved for adult asthma (as the medicine Xolair), scientists genetically engineer an antibody that disables a natural antibody, known as IgE, that triggers allergic reactions. Researchers hope to pursue an FDA-approved anti-IgE therapy for food allergies as well.—Jenn Andrlik

Where are the Allergies Coming From?
Scientists have many theories about why food allergy cases seem to be rising in the western world. One is that it might be due to better diagnosis—children with allergies today might have simply been labeled sickly or as having weak stomachs in the past. Some point to baby skincare products containing common food allergens or to mothers' eating peanut products and then passing them in breast milk.

Food preparation has also been blamed. The U.S. and industrialized nations tend to roast peanuts, although in China, which has a high consumption of nuts yet a lower rate of nut allergies, nuts are generally boiled or fried.

The most popular theory is the hygiene hypothesis, which suggests that as our environment has become more hygienic—people keep themselves and their homes cleaner and use antibiotics to fight infections and vaccinations to prevent illnesses—people's immune systems have begun to attack otherwise harmless proteins in food, causing allergic reactions, or in the air, causing asthma. Each theory has its holes and detractors, though. For instance, the hygiene hypothesis doesn't explain why children in inner-city communities, which have been do***ented as having poorer hygiene, have the highest rate of asthma in the U.S. As frustrating as the lack of certainty is for allergy sufferers and their parents, science doesn't have a clear answer just yet.—P.K.

    —Hannah, student, Charlotte, NC

Because wood expands and contracts with moisture--and can rot if it's left in contact with water for a long period of time--many homeowners shy away from choosing wood flooring for bathrooms.

Actually, wood can be a warm, beautiful flooring option for bathrooms as long as it's given a sturdy, protective finish and is dutifully maintained.

Traditional strip or plank wood flooring is fastened down to subflooring and then sanded and finished.

Newer prefinished wood floorings are fastened down the same way but do not require finishing.

Unless you're experienced in sanding and finishing wood floors, you'll do well to choose the latter type because floor sanding is incredibly dusty work, and a drum sander, in the hands of an amateur, can leave visible marks and ridges on the floor.

    A base for flooring
New wood flooring should be laid on a clean, smooth, level, structurally sound flooring base.

    Installation steps
Before installing wood flooring, stack it indoors for a few days to allow the wood time to adjust to your home's humidity level. Plan to install the flooring perpendicular to the floor joists.

Mark the positions of the joists along a wall for reference, as shown in step 2, and cover the subfloor with a layer of 15-pound asphalt felt to provide some moisture protection and minimize squeaks. Mark the centerline of the room (as discussed in step 1).

If the room is seriously out of square, position the tongue of the first row parallel to the centerline and rip the groove side at an angle parallel to the wall.

During installation, you'll find it's helpful to lay out several rows of boards, staggering them so no end joint is closer than 6 inches to an end joint in the next row. As you install the strips, cut pieces (at least 8 inches long) to fit at the end of each row; allow a 1/2-inch gap at the wall.

Use a radial arm saw or power miter saw to cut the boards. When blind-nailing with a hammer and finishing nails, don't try to drive the nails flush--the indentations will show. Instead, leave each nailhead projecting up about 1/8 inch, then place a nail set sideways over it along the upper edge of the tongue and drive the nail home by tapping the nail set with your hammer. Finally, use the tip of the nail set to recess the nail's head flush with the wood.

    1.
Cover the subfloor with a layer of 15-pound asphalt felt, overlapping seams by about 3 inches. Tack down with a staple gun.
Measure the room's width at two or more points to establish an accurate centerline, and snap a chalk line parallel to your starting wall. Working from the joist marks along the walls, snap chalk lines to mark the locations of the support members.

    2.
To indicate the edge of the first row of flooring, snap another chalk line about 1/2 inch from the starting wall exactly parallel to your centerline. This 1/2-inch gap between the flooring and the wall will allow for expansion; it will be covered by base shoe or baseboard molding.
    3.
Choose the longest boards or widest planks for the first row. Near the wall, where the nailheads will be covered by a base shoe, drill pilot holes for 1 1/2-inch finishing nails, then face-nail the first row through the plywood subflooring to the floor joists or sleepers. Use a nail set to recess the nails below the surface.
    4.
Blind-nail this and the next two rows by hand. Drill pilot holes at a 45-to-50-degree angle through the tongues, centered on each joist or sleeper, at the ends and every 10 inches along the lengths. Fasten with 1 1/2-inch finishing nails. Use a nail set to finish driving each nail.
    5.
When installing the second row and every row thereafter, move a short piece of flooring along the edge and give it a sharp rap with a mallet to tighten the new row against the previous row before nailing.
Remember that end joints in two adjacent rows should not be closer than 6 inches; end joints should also not line up over a joint in the subfloor. If you're installing a wide-plank floor, some manufacturers recommend leaving a crack the width of a putty-knife blade between planks for expansion.

    6.
If you're installing flooring over a large area, use a flooring nailer once you've installed the first three rows. Slip it onto the board's tongue and, using a heavy rubber mallet, strike the plunger to drive 2-inch nails or staples through the tongue into each joist and into the subfloor midway between joists. Be very careful to avoid scratching or otherwise damaging the flooring.
    7.
When you reach the final row, use a block and a pry bar to wedge the last boards tightly into position. Drill holes and face-nail boards where base shoe or baseboard molding will cover, using the reference marks along the wall to locate the joists. Set the nailheads below the surface using a hammer and nail set.
    8.
If your new floor will cause a change of level to a hallway or adjoining room, install a reducer strip for a smooth transition. This strip, milled with a rounded or beveled top, fits onto the tongue of an adjacent board or the ends of perpendicular boards.
It can also be butted against the edges or ends of grooves. Face-nail the reducer strip at the edge of the floor, set the nailheads below the surface, and fill with wood putty. Last, reinstall the base shoe or baseboard molding.

What evidence would make you believe that the United States government was directly involved in planning and carrying out 9/11? Although I have read and posted in many 9/11 threads, I have never seen actual evidence showing the government was involved. I have read about su ion and lack of evidence to suggest implied guilt but that in and of itself is not evidence.

    Please feel free to:
    1. Describe what level of evidence is necessary for you to believe in a conspiracy.
    2. Post any real evidence you have so others who do not have access to it, can re-examine their answer to the above question.

Again, feel free to post real evidence so we can give a better informed answer to the question but when posting, please show the source of the evidence so we can give it the weight it deserves as opposed to hearsay.

Also, please DON'T just post links and tell people to go look. Tell us what we are going to find at those links and expound on why you want us to got there and look.

I know these threads can get pretty heated so please treat others the way you want to be treated.

To answer my own question, I would need to treat it like a courtroom trial. I would consider the government innocent until proven guilty.

I would accept testimony of the conspirators.
Physical evidence from the crime scenes.
Proof of complicity to cover up, alter, or destroy evidence.

Obviously even if there was a conspiracy, we would never hear Bush come out and admit to it so asking for that type of evidence might be a bit silly.

The only evidence I need is the video clip from the pentagon, which does not show a large passenger jet aircraft, plowing into the pentagon. All it shows is a missile/small aircraft. that alone is reasonable doubt to the governments official report/story. Well, that and there was no wreckage from a 757/767 at the pentagon, oh that perfect hole in the c ring too. I doubt a vaporized plane could pull that off, but I'd guess a cruise missile could.

Well i do not have evidence (yet) of the governemnt being directly involved but i have aleady posted evidnece that they had lots of warnings and could have stopped it.

Also the government should release videos, photos, reports and evidence so it does not appear that they are covering up.

Could you please post the video? The only video I've seen is the CCTV video which showed nothing traveling through the field of vision as it was between frames.

Well, that and there was no wreckage from a 757/767 at the pentagon,

I have seen photos of crash debris at the pentagon. What would you suggest about those photos?

What is this belief based on? What have you seen that you can use as a comparison?

The government itself has stated that they F-ed up and that there were plenty of signs they should have seen. Massive incompetence rarely turns out well.

Also the government should release videos, photos, reports and evidence so it does not appear that they are covering up.

If it was all just one big "goof" by the Bush Administration, why are they all still in power? Why did many within the Administration get promotions after 9/11?

Read my two links, and tell me the Bush Administration didn't go out of their way to allow an attack. Tell me the Bush Administration didn't try to cover-up what happened that day.

If there is nothing to hide, why is it hidden?

As for you indepth answer you want i don't have for you because:

A Conspiracy is a Idea, Opinion of a event that has happened and no "Hard Evidence" to colaberate the story.

I myself do not believe it was the government involved in the 9/11 attacks but that of the Elitist who are working towards a NWO. It is more than obvious that alot of the stuff in the Offical report does not add up. Therefore leaving questions to be asked.

There will be no Evidence strong enough to prove this because the "sheep of the world" find it easier to live in ignorance than the truth, just because it is easier to go on with there day to day lives.

I believe there are people out there that will take the time to try and prove it to you.

Now my question to you OP is:

    1) With all of the questions that surround this conspiracy, what proves that there was nothing else to the 9/11 attacks?

    2) Do you know anything at all about the Elitist that control our everyday lives?

History is written by the Victor's of war. The German population was told Poland attack Germany in WWII, so what is true is only to be known by the people who were there. Listen the the FD/PD eye witness testimony, that alone is enough for me. Why would this men and women lie about what the heard and saw when so many of there comrades were killed.

There is plenty of evidence to suggest multiple governments were involved in the 911 attacks, whether in the planning or execution stage.

I have started a thread on that very subject, but its nowhere near complete.

I have at least one source mentioning the FBI suppressing information regarding the 911 attacks, but so far I don't have physical proof the US government was involved.

However, there's more evidence than hearsay to implicate ISI, Mossad, and possibly others in the attacks.

There is no way these agencies could have been operating in the US in such large numbers without US help or negligence.

Our government was involved whether we want to believe it or not. Its a bit scary, but several laws to help you understand what kind of leaders we have include The Patriot Act which is a response to the 911 attacks.

There's also the Patriot Act 2 and the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention bill.

Why would the government need to pass these laws? To protect us? No. They do not care. They want more and more power. More and more control.

The Homegrown terrorism bill is for revolutionaries sick of the fascist federalist control of the world. The government can now incriminate pretty much anyone on ATS for speaking against the government.

    We are all criminals now.

In my opinion, the increasing government security could only have happened after a false flag (or "real") terrorist attack.

The government needed a reason to invade Afghanistan and Iraq. That's two smoking guns right there.

We just don't have the physical evidence (well most of us anyway). If you research the money laundering done prior to 911 there's overwhelming evidence that Wall Street was involved.

This is not simply a cut and dry case here. There are many many elements involved and we are only scratching the surface.

I myself do not believe it was the government involved in the 9/11 attacks but that of the Elitist who are working towards a NWO. It is more than obvious that alot of the stuff in the Offical report does not add up. Therefore leaving questions to be asked.

What in the official reports, do not add up and why?

There will be no Evidence strong enough to prove this because the "sheep of the world" find it easier to live in ignorance than the truth, just because it is easier to go on with there day to day lives.

I think if someone could provide any reasonable amount of evidence, alot of people would change their opinions.

I believe there are people out there that will take the time to try and prove it to you.

Although I am not looking for proof, only evidence, I would greatly appreciate it if they did.

Now my question to you OP is:

    1) With all of the questions that surround this conspiracy, what proves that there was nothing else to the 9/11 attacks?

PROOF is a strong word. I will say that the lack of evidence to support there was anything more to to the 9/11 attack, makes me believe the basic official story-Al Queda terrorists plotted and carried out the attacks.

    2) Do you know anything at all about the Elitist that control our everyday lives?

No. Who are they? How do you know who they are? How exactly do they control our daily lives in relation to 9/11?

    3) With the North American properganda that we recieve from our authority's why does anyone believe what we are told?

I don't believe most of what we're told from the government. My thought is that they're too incompetent to pull off something of this magnitude.

Is it because we are programed to believe what we are told by the news and authority's?

I don't believe the majority of what I hear from either.

I think if someone could provide any reasonable amount of evidence, alot of people would change their opinions.

You can't provide evidence that is locked away in storage, most likely never to be seen by the US populace. And then when that slight chance the information will be released, it turns out the building catches on fire and everything inside is destroyed.

What makes you think we will ever get proof? It's been over 40 years since JFK was assassinated, and we still don't have any PROOF that it was a conspiracy. However, you ask anyone what they think, and they will tell you Oswald wasn't the sole gunman.

No. Who are they? How do you know who they are? How exactly do they control our daily lives in relation to 9/11?

Endgame....watch it. You will be given a partial list of the "Elites," and how they do what they do. Search NWO quotes on ATS, and you'll learn more about who the "Elites" are.

Yeah, their so incompetant that they managed to pass laws that strip away civil liberties from the American people, without ANY complications. So incompetant that they passed legislation that merged the USA/Canada/Mexico together, again without ANY complication. I'm not that great in replying to posts like you are but in my reply Santa Clause is a Conspiracy with kids.lol.

As for your questions there is no real hard evidence to 9/11 because it was all destroyed by our government right after it was cleaned up.

If you don't know about the Elitist you should watch ENDGAME, it is a great introduction to them. But the do entry has alot of theory involved. If you read Daniel Estulin book "The True Story of the Bilderberg Group" you will learn alot in how they do it. It is too complex for me to try and explain on this thread without leaving some holes in it. It is fact of what they are trying to accomplish, and the supposit government is smart enough to pull of 9/11, and one good proof of that is you already believe there incompetent when there not. These people are Master of Pychological warfare and have learned alot about past empires trying to rule the world, and my hat goes off to them and so far it's working. They have been at work for this for decades and only in the last 10yrs have they been more and more talked about and because of that they are speeding up there process, hence 9/11. This is a topic that i know alot about but don't bother talking about on here because there is to much to say about it. "They" are genuises

So if it's so black and white, why hasn't anyone, even Rosie O'Donnell simply show the evidence on TV so we can put everyone in jail? You stated that the WHOLE report is a lie. This should be very easy to PROVE.

If nobody has seen the evidence, then we don't even know if there is any right? If we don't even know whether or not evidence exists, we don't know whether or not there has been a conspiracy.

So a show called Endgame describes a supposed group of people. Is there real evidence of this or is it just more supposition?

I don't believe most of what we're told from the government. My thought is that they're too incompetent to pull off something of this magnitude.

And the fact that you even know about these items of legislation means they're not that bright. The fact that they keep getting caught doing things tells me they're not that bright. The fact that the Bush Administrations approval rating is under 20% tells me the people behind the scenes aren't that bright. Look if you want to pull something over on the public, the last thing you want is that they're unhappy. If they're kept happy, they won't look at what you're doing so closely.

Problem is that an angeny like NORAD is held responsable for protecting lives, so they can be held accountable.

The other side of that is that government and military people getting punished or fired for speaking out against the official story.

This thread is not about bashing atheists, but to make an attempt to understand them! ATS has had a big influx of evangelical Christians, a large group of them within the last few months. This may be possible with atheists also, but I don’t know. Is it possible that the former are just louder and more tenacious?

I thought that it was necessary to bring this thread up – due to all the mud slinging, and name calling, that we have been reading lately between; primarily the two groups.

    Disclaimer:

    1. I am not a religious person. I am not Christian, nor atheist, nor any other labeled group. But I am a spiritual person that happens to believe in the existence of God.

    2. If we can end this debate over the validity or existence or non-existence of God, this would probably make a lot of us happier. You cannot disprove, or prove, the existence of a higher power! To believe either way requires faith. Agnostics believe that and so don’t take a stand either way. My husband calls agnostics: codependent atheists. But that is another story.

I can say that I have had personal attention from God that he has introduced himself to me, and I would be telling you the truth. But, I do not expect many of you to believe that. That is fine with me.

I have been inundated with atheists all of my life – both in my nuclear family and extended family. I think that I have come to understand them fairly well. That is not to say that we can converse without some heat at times. But it helps if we can understand one another.

Here are my thoughts as to why atheists become or choose to be atheists:

Atheist through traumatic events: Many atheists I have found have given up the idea or belief in God due to a tragic event in their lives. My father was an atheist all the way up to three months before his death. Before he died was the only time I heard him question his beliefs regarding the non-existence of God.

His history: he was left on the kitchen floor of his home at the age of 2, dressed only in diapers when his mother took off with his older sister, never to be seen or heard of again! He was left with a father that was emotionally unavailable. Dad’s only recourse besides taking it out on a dog – perhaps, was to believe that there could not be a God, because why would God allow this to happen to a little baby boy?

He fought in hand to hand combat against the Germans in WWII in France. There is that old saying; “There are no atheists in a foxhole or dugout.” I will never know if he remained true to his beliefs while under fire.

Another atheist member of my family lost her son in a motorcycle accident while driving under the influence and hit a parked car at 80 miles an hour. She did not have fuzzy, cozy feelings about God anyway (being an academic), but after that incident, she became a staunch religious atheist. She and her husband joined a skeptics group that meets regularly. They read their magazines and promote their literature to anyone (often in demonstrably angry ways) who will listen. Remind you of anyone??

The stand they take is in believing that there must not be a God, because look what happened to them! Their only way to get even is to; denounce God. There is no other recourse; they cannot turn him in to Child Protection Services. So they often spend an inordinate amount of time talking about a God they don’t believe in. By denouncing him they can subvert some of their anger.

I can say; I understand where they are coming from.

Atheist through academia: I have met many in this category. Many of my family members would subscribe to this origin. Some of my in-laws will openly admit that academia is the only route and that science is what they adhere to. (I might add: their God!) I understand it though. They need to replace God with something!

They are all professionals ie, lawyers, doctors, judges etc. To put it plainly and simply; in their eyes it is just not “cool” to believe in something as corny as God. It is by far too rudimentary for their tastes. Something they associate with the lower elements of society…the uneducated, non-evolved masses. Man is far too intelligent of a species to look to a higher power, and certainly is not in need of one. Academia is certainly the advocate of this thinking, and even promotes it.

Atheist through religion: When I left religion a few years ago I decided to go to many ex- (fill in the blank) religious forums. What I found stunned me! But why it should, I don’t know. I would say that probably 80% of those that left religion became atheists! They threw the baby out with the bath water. If religion was wrong, God must be wrong also. To this day I find that most cannot detach God from religion. The two were so enmeshed they cannot separate them. Religion in essence became the God! So they tossed him out.

Many of us have been the brunt of abuse from religion and have suffered shame and guilt being thrown at us. For many of us this would include: the stalwart Christian soldiers with their ever so loving tactics, LOL! It is truly no wonder that many include God in that inventory.

Atheist through hedonism: The; “I don’t want to be judged for what I do or don’t do,” category. They don’t want big brother and that includes the big one in the sky – looking over them. So we will pretend that “HE” doesn’t exist! They live now, get all one can out of life, with no Godly repercussions, or healthy boundaries. They just want to “feel good” and will go to many lengths to do so, and don’t want to be judged for it. Those that are honest, will own their own consequences. They just don’t want God dragged into the equation.

Some of these individuals will alter their beliefs if forced to enter recovery programs. I watched many staunch atheists change after experiencing Godly interventions – experiences that could not be answered through science (the God of science proved to be too fickle).

Dolly Parton once said; “I have known a lot of atheists, but I’ve never known a happy one!”

I cannot say that I agree with that entirely. I have known some that were comfortable in their skin. But I will say; that in my experience I have seen a thread of anger that seems to permeate them as a whole. But then again, that is my experience…and I have to say; in many ways I cannot blame them!

Many of you will have your thoughts, and I welcome them. Just remember, this is not a thread for mud slinging and name calling! Let’s be grown up about this.

I'm far from religious but i don't really think i'm athiest either. If i had to call myself anything it would be a realist.I've read the bible(s) and they are nothing more than books to me.I've read the old testament, the new testament and the satanic bible and have yet to find any of them to be worth the paper they are printed on.They are full of contradictions if anything.

Everybody needs a crutch. For some people it's alcohol and drugs and for others it's religion. If anything religion is one of a hustle but nothing more and if anyone has any proof otherwise i would be more than happy to listen.

Yes, I call myself that also. Once I left religion I realized I had a lot of choices. But I could not drop the God thing as he had made himself too evident in my life, otherwise, who knows! I could be calling myself atheist also if it weren't for divine intervention.

It's crazy how many people actually believe though. Here's something that struck me as funny awhile back.

I was discussing apparitions with someone and they rolled their eyes and said "you don't seriously believe in that do you".I expressed that i did and then asked them if they were at all religious and they responded that they were and went to church every sunday. So i said "What,it's ok to believe in your ghost but not mine"?

It was amazing how quickly they were offended and were so adamant that religion was real and everything i believed in couldn't be.Their only shred of "proof" was an incomplete book of "scriptures" full of BS and contradictions yet i was wrong for believing in something i have actually SEEN.

I get a good laugh at these people.

I am an atheist. Two years ago I went to bed praying and woke up an atheist, as I sometimes think things through in my sleep I must have pondered the idea of God without bringing in the brainwashing stuff from our society and used only logic and of course woke up an atheist.

I do believe the bible has a lot of history and legend mixed into a brew of hatred and contradicitions. The bible says one thing in one book and then completely contradicts itself in another book. It's confusing and meant to be so.

I'm always amazed at the people who will survive something awful and give their luck at surviving as a proof that God was looking after them. LOL If God who controls everything had something to do with the survival then he must have sent or allowed that horror to come down on their butt in the first place. LOL

I do believe there was a Jesus in history but I do not believe he was God's son. He was someone who due to his mother's lies to keep herself alive as well as her child's (don't forget they killed unmarried pregnant women back then, so what woman with any sense would not scream god inpregnated her to stay alive) of course might have actually believed himself to be God's son which ultimately brought him to his death.

There is no God, never has been and never will be! .................................................. .................................................. .........................................I'm still here! LOL

When you experience something profound, often it is hard to put into words.

We all can suffer from contempt prior to investigation at times!

I just don't like the God Box. The reality of most - putting God into a tight box with a lid. And anything that does not fit their definition or into their equation regarding God, cannot be right in their eyes.

I am an atheist and I think I come from some sort of combination of academia & religion in what led me to this conclusion.

That is, I think the tools of academia got me questioning things (that I was questioning anyway, and had been early on.), but my negative experiences with religion and my ultimate feeling that the majority of times it is used to maintain the status quo, as a tool to keep people subjugated, and to encourage people that focusing on being happy in this world is unimportant, and that they must focus on an afterlife which may or may not exist.

There is a school of thought that says that all religion tends toward fundamentalism, and I worry that it's true. Even without that, I feel belief in the afterlife and the higher power often keeps people from fully enjoying themselves, fully exploring their opportunities, and often results in a problematic amount of self-negation because it's the "moral" thing to do.

So 1. I don't find the evidence compelling that it's the truth, and 2. I don't find the evidence compelling that the belief is necessarily good or healthy.

So what is it that "athiests" believe in?I've always been a little confused by that.

I see Atheism as the yin to the yang of organized religion.

Religion does not always equal spirituality, and I think that the stance of anti religion is based largely on that. Some believe that the person makes the god not the other way around.

I know more agnostics than atheists. And many who claim to be atheist when you start talking to them about the subject and avoid labels actually turn out to be agnostic as well.

The few true atheists I know are atheists because they can find no proof of God or the Divine. They are highly logical, and feel they can find a natural (scientific) explanation for the beauty in the world, and animal and human intelligence, and they simply have not come across a reason sufficient in their estimation to believe in a supernatural force.

The key word here is proof. I think if they were presented with evidence that could not be explained with nature or science alone, they may reconsider. (They are highly logical, first and foremost, and it is illogical to ignore solid evidence) Religion, however, is generally speaking based on faith and belief, no proof needed and none offered.

They are "show me" types of people, and they tend to be as critical of scientific claims as they are of religious ones. They do not just randomly believe the claims of scientists either without some hard data to back it up.

There is a school of thought that says that all religion tends toward fundamentalism,

Actually the term fundamentalism "Originally applied to the Movement of American Protestantism that arose in the early part of the 20th century in reaction to Modernism and that stresses the infallibility of the Bible not only in matters of faith and morals but also as a literal historical record....any strict adherence to any set of basic ideas or principles." -Websters

My understanding is that it also can be applied to any religion that leaves or breaks away from its parent religion, which would apply to most.

So you would seem to be right!

As far as your thoughts; again we agree on much of it. I felt much more freedom when I left religion and then could get to know a God on different footing. When I left religion out of the picture I got an entirely different perspective. Religion IMO is binding!! We get back to the God Box - again!

I appreciate being able to talk on it, and thank you for your thoughts!

Oh, ditto, ditto on that! It took me a long time to realize that. I am anti-religious because that was my experience.

Thank you for that explanation. I agree. Do you find that some are just naturally fence straddlers? There are agnostics and then there are passive agnostics.

I know on ones that plain and simply don't want to rock the boat, which to me lacks conviction. Be an atheist, or one who questions, or take a stand for God. Just take a stand for something!!

It also seems to imply that God did not care about those who did perish.

It's similar to when professional athletes thank God when they hit homeruns or make a good play or win a championship. While I understand the impetus, what seems to come out is the implication that "God likes me better than you."

Not sure where I fall along the continuum of religious to athiest, but "hopeful agnostic" seems to work for now.

I fell away from organized religion I think due to 2 primary reasons:

    1. Church used to bore me to tears. My mom made us go, and as such, as soon as I was on my own and able to stop going, I bailed hard.

    2. The utter hypocracy that exudes from what...90%? or so of the so-called "religious" people I know. If you go to church, and tell people that you're religious, and then at some point I catch you behaving in a very un-Christian like manner, that's it. You're on the list. (or off the list, depending on whether your selling or buying.)

See, it's not so much "The Higher Power" that I have a problem with, it's his typical followers.

They all talk the talk, but so few walk the walk.

There also seems to exist a confusion of a creation "God" or intervening "God" vs. a force, an order, natural presence of flow, what have you.

As mentioned above, if one removes the labels and discusses the simple opinions and observations, many atheists are not that much different in core belief than religious followers or agnostics just use a different approach.

I really have no idea what to call myself. My beliefs don't really stick into any category.

I grew up in church. I went to church every day because I also went to the school at the church. I was always thinking about everything I was told, literally while everyone else was reading their bibles like they were told, I was sitting there thinking about why they made us read the bible.

I was about 15 (I know alot of people think that's to young to make up your mind, but I did) when I realized something. I would sit there and watch all these people going to church, and serving their god, and that's when it hit me. I should not have to be exactly like them. We are all completely different human beings, and yet the church people would tell me that I have to look and act like something that i'm not. I realized that while I was questioning every single thing they told me or made me read, I was much happier than they were.

Questioning your faith is a huge no no in the church. Once you start to question these things that your taught, you become an outcast.

This experience made me realize that this god that they devoted their entire lives to could not possibly exist. I was differnt than they were, so why exactly should I base my life on a book or god, that says everyone has to act like this and do that?

That was the homerun for me. I was different. I was not going to lead my life without questioning everything.

I am not saying that there is no higher being or anything (there has to be something out there) but if this "god" wants me to bow down and follow him based on faith, than I can't do that.

Why you ask. Because my brain was not wired to believe in something I can't see. Why would this god make me with a brain that finds it extremely hard to believe in something I can't see?

If a god wants me to have faith, than he should have created me differently.

If evangelical Christians seem more vocal on ATS compared to atheists it could be because our beliefs come under attack and scrutiny more than any other belief or religion. My observation, of course. Christianity at least comes under more criticism than atheism. Therefore, we speak up to clarify misconceptions, answer questions, and to refute propaganda. Atheism doesn't come under as much fire because it's kind of hard dissecting a belief in nothing.

As for the question in your le, it seems you answered similarly with how I was planning to answer so there is not much more I can say. I can't agree with everything you said but this is one rare occasion where we agree more than usual.
