Its not rich by general standards but if I recall 100k+ a yr is in the top 5% and double the national average. So technically its rich or at the very least way better off.

It is in comparison to a family with a normal combined income of 49k.

Thats like saying "not when you have a BMW payment and one wife with a spending habit"

I'm not talking about lifestyle here I'm pointing out the fact that 100k+ is upper tier according to the real data.

Now you're comparing raising kids and getting them through college with a BMW payment and a spending wife? You really are a , aren't you.

Its an exaggerated analogy to make a point. How am I a . You said 100k isn't rich, I didn't disagree. I said its considered to be in the top 5% of income though which makes its highly uncommon and unlikely that the average person will see that kind of annual income.

Kids in college, fancy cars, rising gas prices blah blah blah its all an expense but possibly affordable by the guy who makes 100k and not the guy who makes 35k. Its like saying I have 350k income but my 8 kids need college so I'm not really rich....or well off.

I don't care what your definition of rich is I simply make the statement that 100k is recognized threshold for the well off.

I guess pointing out some common sense points makes me a . You're looking for an arguement where there isn't one.

I just looked and the top 20% is 92k so say 100k would be top 15% or so. 8 out of 10 people are worse off with the average being less than half of 100k.

    Your satire is greatly appreciated.

TlongII is correct, with enough education, an individual is more than capable of becoming finacially secure.

Opening up the ol' checkbook isn't neccessary.

There are options such as finacial aid, scholarships, grants, loans, ect.

However, completing a higher level of education takes focus and dedication.

The point is that with this staggering economy, rising gas & food prices….Everybody is feeling the pinch….In Los Angeles people are cutting their therapist sessions to 2x’s per month, letting their tanning coach go, cutting back on colonics to once every two months….Herbalist are struggling to make ends meet… Albertsons scones & coffee instead of Star Bucs…These are difficult times for people earning over 100k per year….

Comparing putting kids through school and a BMW payment is not a "common sense point".

"Common sense" should tell you that those two things aren't alike.

I knew it was a matter of time before someone chimmed in with the whole "plenty of free education to go around" bit.

Not everyone qualifies for grants and scholarships etc. I know all I qualified for was 630 dollars. Lots of red tape and misinformation about grants and so forth going around and not all counselors know their ins and outs. Great if you can get it but its not as easy and common as you think. Some of the requirements for grants are downright strange and unique.

Loans: Yeah lots of people can get them but don't forget that most people are attached to their parents income into their 20's so its isn't as easy as you think. I know at 21 and fully independent I had issues at UTSA getting a loan because my Fathers income exceeded 300k annual. Didn't matter that I lived on my own and had for three years. Didn't matter that I had my own job and made my own way.

Not to mention that not everyone is comfortable taking on 30k plus in loans.

So unless you can show me some links to easy grant money into the 10 thousands I don't think you have a leg to stand on. 1k here 2k here 500 here isn't enough.

If you're going to deviate from the point to nitpic my piss poor analogy then go ahead and take a victory for yourself.

    So you feel better:

I'm sorry my analogy didn't jive with the thought process of Travis. I'll make a better one next time. Regardless of the fact that I'm right we all know that making the best analogy possible is all that matters.

Because a kids education is different than a BMW payment only in a physical nature.....A ING EXPENSE IS AN EXPENSE.

Being able to put your children through college actually is a luxury that 80% of people or so really can't afford, or can only afford with tremendous sacrifice. So, he's really not as far off as you'd like to think.

You know the more I read this the more ing stupid it sounds.

Even if you max out all you can from student loans and qualify for lets say 5k a year in grants and work part time for 8 bucks an hour its doubtful you could survive like that for 4 years(probably 5 or 6 because you're working 20 hours a week) in a reasonable apartment. With gas, food, clothing, water, power and so forth I don't see it working.

Maybe 20 years ago but not now. It takes additional help. School is expensive.

Then what you'd be stacked with 40k-60k in loans at above prime rates.

You're probably better off taking a 70k loan out and buying a solid business plan and get your ass to the grindstone.
