The point of the car is that it uses fabric instead of sheetmetal. This makes things like active aerodynamics much easier. It's also much, much cheaper.

The biggest downside is that the vandal easily can destroy your car rather than simply keying it.

Ah, I wasn't aware of this. My only hands-on experience with BMW is my mom's ridiculous 7 Series which only gets 15 MPG.

Of course, my mother has a bit of a lead foot It might be better if she would stop racing teenagers.

Few Americans buy BMW's because of their handling prowess or powertrain technology. They buy BMW's because they think the blue-and-white propeller logo means they are better than other people.

So I wouldn't hold my breath for stupendous sales of these 40-mpg diesels. Diesel is the fuel that prole truckers and hillbillies use.

Exactly. The people driving BMW's and other luxury cars in LA area actually broke, it's a just a show.

I would drive one if it were American made, to be honest with you. Give me a Ford Escape Hybrid that gets 35 MPG over BMW any day. My Mom's BMW has given us a lot of trouble, too, which made me all the more wary of foreign cars.

And before my family and I are labelled as 'richers': the stupid BMW was a gift

Because they are better than other people. It's a proven fact that BMW makes you a better everything than everyone else on the road. I don't understand how you could make such a stupid comment like that. We buy brand names to be better than every one else. Stop trying to take away the one good thing people can do to out another when it's not their fault they are worldly. Accept it already.

The Z4, X3 and X5 are all manufactured in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Z4's sort of stink. X3/X5 are okay if you are a mom.

Europeans who drive BMW's take for granted that they are expected to be more rigorous in their maintenance of the car and learn how everything works. That is part of the ownership experience in their eyes. Such a notion is ridiculous to an American who looks for a car that starts when you turn the key/press the button and goes where you want with little fuss.

Are they now? That's fascinating... I'm not nearly as well versed in the car world as I thought I was! And for some reason it makes it all the more awesome that the city is called Spartanburg, but I'll resist the 300 joke

And, again, not a 'richer' by any means -- the car was a gift. It's comfy and quiet but I would never want one.

My dad just lmao'd at the video. Been a mechanic all his life and can fix anything that has a motor in it. The whole concept of this car actually being logical to buy, drive, and maintain is hilarious.

How do you wash it? Does the fabric show stretch marks after a year? How much does it cost to repair body damage? Insaaaane.

Fabric on airplanes has been around forever.

Obviously, this isn't practical technology anytime soon. But at least it's thinking out of the box from the idea that sheetmetal is the only possible option for the exterior of an automobile.

Point taken. And it seems it would be safer and get better gas mileage considering less weight. Then again the safety issue is a concern for such a light weight car. It would fold like a paper towel in a high speed wreck.

The car still has a metal space frame. Think of it like an Ariel Atom covered in cloth.
