Terminally ill killer could get ‘compassionate release’ to die outside prison
Susan Atkins, left, sits in a Santa Monica, Calif., courtroom Oct. 13, 1970, as Charles Manson walks in before pleas were entered for them for the 1969 killings of actress Sharon Tate and others.

    updated 12:50 p.m. CT, Fri., June. 13, 2008
CORONA, Calif. - Former Charles Manson follower Susan Atkins, convicted in the 1969 murder of actress Sharon Tate, could soon be released from prison because she is near death, authorities said.

Atkins, 59, is terminally ill and being considered for so-called "compassionate release," state corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton said. She gave no details of Atkins' illness but said a doctor had determined she had less than six months to live.

The corrections department was reviewing the request, which if approved would then be passed to the state Board of Parole, which has the power to release prisoners under state law so they can die with loved ones, at their expense.

Such releases are relatively rare — only 10 of the 60 requests made last year were granted, Thornton said. The prisoners must have family members willing and able to care for them.

Atkins, now a gray-haired, matronly-looking woman, was one of cult leader Manson's ersatz hippie "family" of young killers who burst into a Beverly Hills home 39 years ago and killed Tate, the pregnant wife of filmmaker Roman Polanski, along with four others. The following night they stabbed to death a wealthy couple in their Los Angeles home.

Atkins has been denied parole 11 times, most recently in 2005.

She was housed in the California Ins ution for Women in Corona for 37 years but has been in a nearby hospital since March.

Well, she's done a lot of good since she got put in Prison. I think she's served her time and it's kind of heroic how she turned her life around. [/JoeChalupa]

This one is the ing ...she's the last one that needs to be let out outside of Tex Watson.

Someone needs to laugh at her and tell her, Look , you're gonna die, in prison.

I rather see Manson get released than this .

Probably prisons save more money letting criminals die outside of prison.

Well ... your impressions of Croutons, JoeBurrito, and BasketballDan are pretty good. I think your impression of me, though, falls short.

I do want mercy for everyone involved, but I'm also a law-and-order type. There's no way this woman should be out on the street. The fact that she is terminally ill (and I presume of no danger to anyone?) is the only reason I would consider letting her go. And would hope that God blesses her (mainly so that people see it and marvel at his merciful nature!), but not with a blind eye to her sins.

    Dude...this woman is a fiend.

"Sharon was the last to die," Susan said with a laugh as she described how Sharon was begging her, " Please don't kill me. Please don't kill me. I don't want to die. I want to live. I want to have my baby. I want to have my baby."

Susan said she just looked at Sharon straight in the eye and said, "Look, , I don't care about you. I don't care if you're going to have a baby. You had better be ready. You're going to die and I don't feel anything about it...In a few minutes I killed her."

Susan said she saw that there was Sharon's blood on her hand and she tasted it. "Wow, what a trip! To taste death, and yet give life."

She had wanted to cut out Sharon's baby but there wasn't enough time. She had also wanted to take out all the victims' eyes and squash them against the walls and cut off and mutilate all of their fingers, but they didn't have the chance.

You don't want to see the pictures of what she did...

She also wrote Pig in Sharon Tate's blood on the door.

In her chilling testimony, she said, "I don't know how many times I stabbed her and I don't know why I stabbed her.... She kept begging and pleading and begging and pleading and I got sick of listening to it, so I stabbed her."

She said the killings were done under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs.

"I was stoned, man, stoned on acid," she testified.

She expressed no remorse until years later when, at her parole hearings, she apologized. But she also suggested she may have exaggerated her role during the trial and that she did not actually kill Tate. The claim was dismissed by prosecutors as self-serving.

At the end of her trial testimony, she said, "I feel no guilt for what I've done. It was right then and I still believe it was right."

    More:

During her 2000 hearing, Tate's sister Debra, read a statement written by their father, Paul, which said in part, "Thirty one years ago I sat in a courtroom with a jury and watched with others. I saw a young woman who giggled, snickered and shouted out insults, even while testifying about my daughter's last breath, she laughed.

    Still more...

Later that day, Susan began to talk again and gave Virginia the list of celebrity targets that were next on their list: Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen and Tom Jones. It was important to select victims that would shock the world.

She had planned to carve the words "helter skelter" on Elizabeth Taylor's face with a red-hot knife and then gouge her eyes out. Then she would castrate Richard Burton and put his penis along with Elizabeth Taylor's eyes in a bottle and mail it to Eddie Fisher.

Sinatra was to be skinned alive, while he listened to his own music. The Family would then make purses out of his skin and sell them in hippie shops. Tom Jones would have his throat slit, but only after being forced to have sex with Susan Atkins.

Seriously...she's a monster. It's not excessively cruel to leave her in prison, she's doing just fine there. She's lucky she wasn't dead a long time ago.

I agree totally that she's acted like a monster in her past. I'm not even saying "let's set her free." I'm only saying that IF she is terminally ill, AND is of no threat anyone, they might CONSIDER letting her go.

I always try to keep justice and mercy in balance. Not that I always succeed. But your impressions of the other guys are spot on.

Throwing her out on the street will reduce the burden of the tax payers. Right now, the street would be more punishment rather than a favor unless she has someone to take care of her.

Who gives a if she is mentally ill. She killed a person.
