Wow, I thought there cap situation was alot tighter.
IRVING – The Dallas Cowboys begin a three-day minicamp Tuesday, representing the end of the organized on-field work before training camp.
Off the field, there also is work to do, like signing their six draft picks and resolving contract situations with safety Ken Hamlin and wide receiver Terry Glenn.
Hamlin, whom the Cowboys franchised, will not be in attendance Tuesday because technically he is not under contract. Glenn isn't expected either, but he could be subject to a fine for missing the mandatory sessions.
By July 15, Hamlin has to play for the $4.396 million tender, agree on a multiyear deal or sit.
Glenn, who played in only one regular-season game last year after knee surgery, is set to make $1.74 million in base salary. He must decide whether to accept a split salary – which would pay him $500,000 if he hurts his right knee again – or risk being released.
But regardless of what happens with those two, the Cowboys are in excellent salary-cap shape – with more than $8 million available – thanks to moves made in the last month.
With an uncertain labor future, the Cowboys made pre-emptive strikes with signings, restructurings and extensions that noted the changes in the accounting rules after this season.
The NFL owners' decision to opt out of the collective bargaining agreement means the 2008 and 2009 seasons will be played under the current system. If there is no new agreement before the 2010 season, that season will be played without a salary cap, but under rules that will limit players' free-agency rights.
In making these moves, the Cowboys are covered.
"You prepare for the worst case, and if it's better, then you should be fine," Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said.

dude when you hit the bottom you have no other way to go. If we release Glenn I wouldn't be surprised if the Skins gave him a 20 million bonus.
Just a recent update on Glenn's status. He's now saying he wants to finish his career in Dallas and all the crap he said earlier was just because he was upset, etc.

Anyway, where can the guy go with a suspect knee at age 35 playing WR? I think he's about to get smart, take the 500k injury settlement money and play this season. I hope so, still have doubts about Crayton or anyone else being a legitimate #2 WR.

they weren't as good as the pokes last year - obviously - but they were a playoff team.

Honestly when Snyder realizes that you build a team through the draft and not by trading pics and spending crazy money it will be a scary day.
It will only be a scary day because we all will discover that just froze over.
It'll be intresting to see if Jason Cambell progresses this year. I might use a late round fantasy pick on this guy.

apparently, nobody was paying attention to the redskins offseason this year.
i do think it's funny that when (in the past) the Redskins would sign 3 or 4 free agents to big contracts to supplement their roster - they were doing things the wrong way.
then the Pats do it, and they're just shrewd.
(clearly, the Pats were smarter about who they went after. but that's an argument of individual selections, not overall strategy.)
Not for lack of trying...they tried to trade away picks for Johnson.
There's difference between signing FA's in hopes of putting your team over the top to win a Super Bowl, and doing it just to be a wild card team. The Patriots already had a foundation set, the Redskins tried to take shortcuts.
the redskins biggest (and most criticized) spending year was 2000, when they were coming off a division le and a playoff victory. that club was a botched snap on a game-winning FG attempt from going to the NFC Championship.
any team in the league will be willing to trade some picks for the right player. still, washington showed restraint in FA and didn't offer so much from the draft to be an offer than Cincy couldn't refuse.
as was, i still think that was a solid offer. the redskins used their first pick on Devin Thomas. I think that was a solid pick. But the odds are highly in favor Johnson out-producing Thomas over the next 4-5 years.
