I dont hold the 2006 Finals much against Dirk because the bottom line is he made clutch plays in game 5, had a monster game 6... but the whistles just did not allow it to happen... even if his shooting % was off.
But obviously a first round exit is worse than Finals runner up, so the 2008 MVP let his team down less than the 2007 MVP.
I just think it shows a double standard in the media though. I was hearing on NBA TV about how it was Kobe's "teammates" fault. And I'll buy that to some extent, but you never hear that kind of for Dirk.

neither one really let their teams down. their teams let Dirk and Kobe down. its hard to hit shots when you are constantly double and triple teamed because your teammates either dont hit shots, or can be counted on to make ing dumbass plays/turnovers. not to mention piss poor coaching.
The double standard is still on full display.
All I keep reading about is how Odom and Gasol are weak, yet I never heard anything similiar for Dirk's teammates.
Here's what I think we learned from the 08 season:
That even the least clutch, fakest, superstar of this generation (KG) can win a ring if you put a damn good cast around him. Not even PP or Allen were known to be winners, but look what happened when they brought them all together.
The point is, that if you are as good a player as Dirk and Kobe (I would add TMac to the list as well) are, then the onus is really on menagement to get you a good cast, and a good coach to lead you. I have no doubt that both Dirk and Kobe can lead a team to a ring, if they have enough to work with. They both have come pretty damn close.

Neither "let his team down." Overall, Dirk played well against Miami, he had a terrible G4, but the Mavs were blown out in the game, so he wasn't alone in sucking. Wade had a bad Game 2 and the Heat were blown out. Dirk did his job against Miami.
^Dirk did more than his job, games 5 and 6 from him would have been enough to seal the trophy and catapult him into legend territory, but we all know what happened.
Games 2,5,6 had the worst calls i've ever seen.And Bennet Salvatore.

The type of credit of being, "The Best Player in the game", along with a very talented cast points to Kobe. Were the Mavs up 2-0? Sure, but all they did was protect home court.

Kobe or Dirk didn't fail their teams, both were in similar situations because the defense was designed to stop them. In Kobe's case the Celtics were just the better team but there was no reason for them to get owned like that in game 6, as for Dirk it didn't matter how many clutch shots he hit Wade was always given the opportunity to go to the FT line to answer. Kobe and Dirk both have to bounce back in 08-09
2006 Dirk isn't who let his team now. I'd say the 2007 Dirk would be more comparable.
Either way, I don't think you can fully place the blame on the 2006 Dirk or the 2008 Kobe for which player let his team down. I think Dirk let his team down in 2006, by not being a better leader and settling for jumpshots. I blame Kobe for allowing the Celtics to come back from 24 down in Game 4 on his homecourt and settling for jumpshots. But I think in both cases, it was a matter of no one else on the team really showing up for the series.
