He is reportedly on the block. Would you want him? Maybe the Spurs could use the trade exception to get him. I would like him as a backup. Thoughts?

Is he any good on "D"

I never really paid that much attention to him when he played.

He doesn't seem like a horrible option.

IF..& thats a big IF, Portland will take the trade exception plus a pick or two, this deal needs to be made...I would rather see Jack at the backup PG position than Vaughn& he can also play SG in spots... He fills a need, he's young, athletic & he can score, who is a better option that is realistically available? This is a pretty important off season...we only have a few of assets, the MLE, LLE, the Beno TE & our picks & cash...if we are able to fill a huge need & get younger etc, all for the Beno TE, its a no brainer.

I've got no problems with this. Especially if Chalmers is unavailable. There just isn't that many backup PGs available. Jack has been an occasional starter for the Blazers.

Knicks Still Debating Draft Or Trade?

    Jun 19, 2008 6:39 AM EST
It is unclear whether the Knicks plan to use their first round pick, sixth overall, in next week's NBA draft or trade for a solid player, the New York Post is reporting.

Either way, they would like to come away from draft night with a point guard for the future.

Toronto's T.J. Ford, Milwaukee's Mo Williams, Indiana's Jamaal Tinsley, and Portland's Jarrett Jack are on the block. Sources have indicated Raptors' General Manager Bryan Colangelo, who picks 17th and is looking to move up, has been most active.

UCLA's Russell Westbrook appears to have impressed Donnie Walsh the most out of the point guards who probably will be available at pick six.

I think Jack would make a nice addition to the Spurs roster...especially if the team couldn't acquire Pargo. He can score, has range, and isn't afraid to take a shot; at the same time he's equipped to quarterback an offense.

Jack is a good PG, good enough to start for other teams. He would be a great addition to the Spurs. He has the size and frame of a big defensive PG that Tony lacks.
Pargo is a Liability on defense and is an inconsistent streak shooter, the Spurs already have that (Finley).

Pargo's defense showed signs of improvement this season, especially in the playoffs. He was able to keep Tony Parker in front of him, which is why Scott had him defending TP towards the end of halfves in the latter portion of the series and put him on Tony rather than CP when both guards were on the floor. He frustrated Tony a bit with his size and the fact that he didn't jump after Parker's initial move to the basket on crossover dribbles and such. As far as the streakiness of the jumper, I'll concede to that. But JP can do much MUCH more than Finley when his jumper isn't falling, like distribute the ball and penetrate to help with spacing. I'll take either as a backup to Tony at this point, but I REALLY like JP and have since he was in LA.

This guy is a black Beno.

shaky ball-handling, good jump shooter, shaky defender, and his game is regressing just like Beno.
Promising in his rookie year, but regressed to the point where they want to get rid of him to unsuspecting public.

Get him - but for nothing. No picks. Maybe for some petty cash.

Portland's FO would be laughed out of the league if they let such a deal happen.

We can offer salary relief with the TE & we can offer additional picks which Portland is looking for, so I wouldn't say that we have "nothing" to offer.

Portland isn't looking for picks. they have enough picks to draft two more teams. Portland is listening to offers for their pick. last rumor: Barbosa for Webster plus #13.
Portland also isn't a team that desperately seek cap relieve. they still have an owner with some extra $ in the wallet. sure, they want to trade Jack, but only in a package for a much better player. likely a SF or PG. we don't offer Tony, so we are not in the game.

One possible way for the Spurs to get Jack might be in a 3 team trade.
The Blazers are gonna make a big trade this summer for a SF- they have the young players, the big expiring contracts or Francis and Lafrentz, and the 13th pick.
    For example:
The Blazers get their SF. The second team gets the young players, picks, and the expiring contracts. And the Spurs get Jack and maybe a Pryzbilla or Frye.

Looks like the below article fuels the fire in regards to trading Jack away sooner rather then later.

    Augustin turns heads at workout
    Posted: Friday June 20, 2008 08:41AM ET
I've got one word to sum up Wednesday's predraft workout at the Trail Blazers' practice facility: Wow. Joe Alexander was impressive on Tuesday in displaying exceptional athleticism, leaping ability and raw potential. Russell Westbrook made a strong case to become a Blazer last week when he showed better-than expected shooting ability, versatility and athleticism. But I've been to every one of the Blazers' nine workouts thus far and no prospect has revealed a more polished, NBA-ready game than D.J. Augustin did today.

The thing is, sometimes when a team has lots of picks, and a player they don't have plans for, they'll let him go for pennies on the dollar if they get no real offers. They have 4 draft picks, and 12 players under contract already, 13 if you include the QO to James Jones. Something has to give, and the odd men out appear to be Jack (falling out of favor) and Channing Frye (Oden,Aldridge, Pryz). Frye for Bonner doesn't save them anything this year, but nets them about $1M next year when Frye is due a qualifying offer of $4.2M. Unfortunately, Jack is probably out of reach. He doesn't fit in the Beno exception, so unless they are willing to take Vaughn/filler/rights to Splitter, we're probably SOL on Jarrett.

not true. for trade calculations on draft night, its the '07-'08 salaries that come into play. which for jack is 1.2 mil, well within the beno exemption.

still dont think we have enough to offer straight up, but id love to be the third wheel in a multi-team trade (portland-sa-teamXYZ):

portland sends jack to sa and other assets + cash to teamXYZ
sa send pick(s) + cash to teamXYZ
teamXYZ sends vet pg or sf to portland

still not very likely, but we did essentially pull off turk and mercer for the lukewarm body of danny ferry years back, so anything is possible. especially if portland is as active on draft night as they look to be.

Do the Spurs really need this guy? With free agency, the draft, and Mahinmi coming in I think they will be in much better shape than most seem to think.
