Prentezis' rights were traded to Toronto for this year's 2nd round (#45) selection. Randy Holcomb was traded along with John Salmons and Marcus Bryant (Mark Bryant) to Larry Brown's 76ers for Speedy Claxton.
Carlos Briggs drafted by the Spurs '86... Did he ever played for the Spurs? I remember him playing in the Philippines for my favorite team. That guy can shoot the lights out! I think he average more than 50 pts., Also, He was a guest speaker for our '91 summer league and our Mayor challenge him to shoot a 3 pointer. That guy shot it few feet away from the 3 point line and it was all net!.. by the way it was only 1 attempt and the rim is a lot smaller than the regulation size.

Also, because Pop likes old guys and the roster has often been full during that time. So the Spurs have taken shots at international players with lottery talent who have fallen in the draft due to their contract situations.
A player like Beno would probably be in the starting lineup on most teams, if not the rotation. Because of Pop's selectivity and demands, he was unable to hack it in SA. So now the Spurs' FO is somehow horrible because they weren't able to find a player who can not only play in the NBA but who can be a member of a championship rotation?
Spurs fans are some spoiled whiny es.
I remember being at the Draft Party and Larry Brown came running out like a little school girl to anounce that we were drafting Schintzius
Larry Brown loves the Big Man, just ask the Pistons
What a freaking joke
Yes. Splitter as well. Both were gambles with a low 1st round pick and low 2nd round pick. Scola didn't work out because of the luxury tax. Splitter didn't work out due to the ability of an Euroleague team to outbid a low 1st round rookie scale contract.
Oh noes.
Manu was a totally lucky pick and Pop may have been the GM at the time, I don't recall. However, you're giving too much credit to RC for the ping pong balls and injuries going the spurs way.
I guess the fact that Scola, Josh Howard, Barbosa, and Noccionni could have easily been on this team makes it even worse.
ROFL. When the low 2nd round pick pans out, it's luck. When it doesn't, fire the GM.
Speedy Claxton helped the Spurs win the 2003 championship (Salmons pick). The draft pick acquired for Barbosa's rights along with another #1 went to NY with Malik Rose for Nazr Mohammed, who was a key factor in the Spurs 2005 championship run.
It sure get's old educating these people complaining all the time, doesn't it Marcus B?
Ignorant and spoiled posters I say.
The Spurs have had the fewest draft assets to work with compared to EVERY OTHER TEAM in the NBA. It is difficult to draft stars when you don't have a #1 or you have the 25-30th pick.
The Spurs have actually done a good job of drafting talented players overall given their draft position.
Maybe uneducated Spurs fan would like for the team to lose 60 games next year so the FO can draft better.
I agree with you, late 2nd round picks are crap shoots. Missing on 2nd round picks is not why he should be canned. It's consistenly missing on 1st rounders that's the problem. Literally, you or I could luck out on a second rounder or two once every 10 years.
Perhaps Larry is a latent sexual?
All of them?
Scola could've been on this team if the Spurs hadn't moved Nesterovic and then sought out a replacement center. Now are they supposed to not address needs today for someone showing up tomorrow? Howard or Barbosa was a choice made in order to go after an all-NBA 1st team member who your star, who happened to be a free agent at the time, wanted you to go after.
What low 1st rounders have they "missed" out on? They moved a couple to move a contract. They took Beno who on any other team would be a part of the rotation. Mahinmi is likely joining the rotation next year. They took a shot on Splitter. The worst that can be said about Splitter is that he cost them Landry. BFD.
this is so debateable it's not even funny. I love Speedy and Nazr for the very short times they were here. But is it coincidence they were here a very short time?
Happy, but can see the end is near if personnel decisions aren't changed in a hurry. Spurs can win 1 or 2 more les with a little help, which they haven't received in the past 5 years from the front office.
It sure get's old educating these people complaining all the time, doesn't it Marcus B?
It's tougher, but the spurs have blown through 10 1st round picks the past 7 years and have Kurt Thomas, Nazr, and Speedy Claxton to show for it. I would think the greatest FO in the history of the league with the ability to see Manu's greatness with the 2nd to last pick of a draft could get us more with so many 1st round picks. The Spurs have had the fewest draft assets to work with compared to EVERY OTHER TEAM in the NBA. It is difficult to draft stars when you don't have a #1 or you have the 25-30th pick.
Spurs have been winning 50 plus games forever. If we don't do better in the draft, we'll have to pray to the ping pong balls gods again.Maybe uneducated Spurs fan would like for the team to lose 60 games next year so the FO can draft better.
Yes it does.
why are you making it so complicated. They chose Bonner over Scola that's it.
Tim Duncan wanted Josh Howard.Howard or Barbosa was a choice made in order to go after an all-NBA 1st team member who your star, who happened to be a free agent at the time, wanted you to go after.
Riddle me this Solid D....
Why did we not have a #1 pick in 1977, our first year to draft as a NBA team?
No they didn't. They couldn't deal Bonner's rights to move Butler's contract and avoid paying a significant amount of luxury tax. And, again, they faced the luxury tax because they were trying to win now instead of not addressing the center spot in hopes that the almighty Scola might appear at some time in the future.
...and Jason Kidd. So the Spurs went after Kidd.Tim Duncan wanted Josh Howard.
Bonner was a free agent and they could have let him go. Butler's contract would have cost them some cash, no doubt. RC gets somewhat a reprieve because of Holt's cheapness. Nevertheless, Scola was worth a lot more and RC couldn't get more than a few bucks in return.
So that cost them 7 years of 1st round picks? I guess Pop deserves some managerial blame too....and Jason Kidd. So the Spurs went after Kidd.
LOL at the notion that the Spurs could have somehow just remained a le contender into infinity by using their draft picks differently.
The window closes when #21 hangs it up. It opens again when the Spurs find a dominant star. None of the guys the Spurs "could have" drafted fit that bill.
ROFL. They would have still been stuck with Butler's contract and would have been unable to sign Scola due to the lux tax liability. Then Scola re-ups with Tau.
What? Udrih is still in this league, no? Mahinmi is coming in next season. They moved what they received for the '03 pick and the '06 pick to get rid of Rose, who, of course, helped them win a le in '03. And they got Mohammed for the '05 le run out of that deal. And of course they signed Rose to keep Duncan (who was to be a FA the following year) happy and to keep Rose away from the Lakers. They used the '07 pick to gamble on Splitter, who was a lottery talent who fell because of his contract with Tau.
So that cost them 7 years of 1st round picks? I guess Pop deserves some managerial blame too.
Nevermind the 3 les the team just won, let's run out the GM because they haven't been able to pull more stars with low 1st round picks while serving a finicky coach and an owner unwilling to pay the lux tax.
That's the contextual piece in all of this ing that seems to get missed.
Not to mention a championship winning roster that was often full.
:shakesheadindisgust
Their eyes are blinded by the glare of championship bling and the unrealistic thought that a decade of dominance can be extended with marginal all-stars, none of which is or was a great big-man.
Even the 2004 Pistons, for all the talk of their commitment to team principles and lack of a major star, were a club built around lottery picks (even if those picks were exercised by other teams). 6 of the 12 players on that Pistons' playoff roster were guys who were picked in the lottery (Hamilton, Billups, R. Wallace, Williamson, Hunter, and Milicic).
In the last ten years, the Spurs have grabbed an all-star point guard with a late first round pick & an all-star shooting guard with a late second round pick. Compare that with the second most successful team of the past decade, the Lakers:
2000 29 L.A. Lakers Mark Madsen Stanford
2001 - - - -
2002 20 Toronto (from Seattle via New York, rights traded to Lakers) Kareem Rush G, Missouri
2003 24 (round 1) L.A. Lakers Brian Cook Illinois
2003 32 (round 2) L.A. Lakers Luke Walton Arizona
2004 27 (round 1) L.A. Lakers Sasha Vujacic Italy
2004 56 (round 2) L.A. Lakers Marcus Douthit Providence
2005 10 (round 1) L.A. Lakers Andrew Bynum St. Joseph HS
2005 37 (round 2 from Bobcats) Lakers (4) Ronny Turiaf Gonzaga
2005 39 (round 2) L.A. Lakers Von Wafer Florida State
2006 26 (round 1) L.A. Lakers Jordan Farmar UCLA
2006 51 (round 2) L.A. Lakers (traded to Toronto) Cheick Samb Senegal
2006 58 (round 2) Dallas (traded to Lakers for 2007 2nd round pick) J.R. Pinnock George Washington
2007 19 (round 1) L.A. Lakers Javaris Crittenton Georgia Tech
2007 40 (round 2 from Charlotte) L.A. Lakers Sun Yue China
2007 48 (round 2) L.A. Lakers Marc Gasol Spain
