I'm pretty sure RC and POP know more about evaluating players and player situations better than any of us so I'll reserve judgement until later.
They've done a of a job since drafting TP.

    :salute:

It's not that I know anything about him, but there were several guys who have played in big time compe ion and done well, Roberts, Chalmers, Arthur. I got my fingers crossed, but I just see the Spurs either trading this guy or letting him go before the season starts.
    how do we...

    (a) go for a point guard, not a young wing/forward?

    (b) pick a low rated point guard, when relatively "obvious" bigger-timers (chalmers, douglas-roberts) are available?

...i'm open to an answer. but i want an answer...how is this guy SO much better than the more proven guys?

The league is turning into a point guard league. This pick was made to slow down opposing point guards while getting some scoring in return.

i don't know he's not, but i do know that no one expected him to go in the first round. i know he's relatively short. i know he's not an all-time athlete with a quick first step. i know he's not hidden away in europe either.

What the heck do you know about George Hill? Did you work him out personally? How do you know he "sucks"? I trust the Spurs know much better than all the GM wannabes in this forum. The guy can play both guard positions, defends well, and most importantly he can score!! That fills a big need for us.

    I'm good with this pick.

He's the same height as Tony Parker.

But that doesn't mean he won't be a solid player. There are plenty of quick point guards that suck balls.

    http://www.nba.com/draft2008/profiles/GeorgeHill.html

I look at his statistics on 2007-2008 and he averaged 21,5 points. He also extremely quick and handle and pass the ball very well. Its a good pick considering Rush,Ibaka, Batum and Ajinkca already being picked. I smell 3 points potential as well. Hopefully he can be useful of the bench. Chalmers and CDR fans must be upset...

How long is RC going to get a pass for his drafts because of Tony and Manu...

I can't believe I waited this long for George Hill...an undersized, turnover-prone guard.
Forever, they are just going to waste the rest of tim, tonys, and manu's career because we got lucky with the ping pong balls and RC deserves aLl the credit

Birn you man be happy with the pick but you have several other top combo guards that played in better compe ion that GH did. What the Spurs need was a young forward to play along side Tim and learn from the best pf in history.

"Here's an Eastern Conference scout on the San Antonio Spurs pick of point guard George Hill of IUPUI: "This kid can play every fact of the game. He has long arms, quick and is really, really a terrific scorer. He probably rebounds the point guard position better than any point guard in the country. He's a legit player. He could've started for anyone in America."

The Spurs also had been high on French forward Nicolas Batum, who was drafted by Houston (for Portland) one spot earlier."

How do you know this? Because "analysts" put it in their "mock" "draft"?

    Backup PG plays 15 minutes a game...when they're ready!

Wing players and post players have the potential to play 20 to 30 mpg if they prove they can handle it.

there were lots of "solid players" on the board. everything you say could also be said of chalmers or cdr.

you don't aim for "solid". if the spurs hadn't gotten lucky with some diamond in the rough finds, we wouldn't have tp, gino, or several other les.

we need those finds. i don't see this being the guy. may i be wrong.

You have to love the Spurs. They always march to the beat of a different drummer. I sort of like this pick because I think he's a guy who can really play -- and play both the 1 and 2. But is he really better than Mario Chalmers? I don't think so. I don't want to second-guess one of the best-drafting teams in the NBA, but I think Chalmers will be a better NBA player.
