Source: Celtics make offers to Posey, Maggette
Marc J. Spears, Globe Staff July 1, 2008 05:11 PM

The Celtics have made contract offers to two forwards: Their own free agent, James Posey, and Clippers free agent Corey Maggette, sources told the Boston Globe. The most the Celtics could offer is the mid-level exception (about $5.8 million), and it's doubtful that they could sign both players. The terms of the offers were not disclosed.

Posey averaged 7.4 points and 4.4 rebounds in 2007-08 and was a NBA Sixth Man of the Year candidate in his first season with Boston. The two-time NBA champion was a strong leader for the Celtics and opted out of the second year of a two-year deal on Monday to become an unrestricted free agent. Maggette averaged 22.1 points and 5.6 rebounds last season for the Clippers and played for Celtics coach Doc Rivers in Orlando during the 1999-2000 season.

So they offered Posey crap? Is that what is being implied?

If so, Posey may not be a happy customer, and I wouldn't be surpised if he looks elsewhere because that. He might feel underappreciated.

Don't they have non-bird exception with Posey? Meaning they could still offer Maggette MLE?

i doubt maggette's actually going to accept the offer. he's still in his prime and he's a 20/5 guy. does he really want to take a back seat in Boston when he can get more minutes almost anywhere else in the league?

I don't believe they have any Bird Rights with Posey whatsoever. They are probably contemplating a S&T for Maggette.

Magette is worth a of a lot more than the MLE.

I see Posey resigning with BOS though.

Where the is he going to play? Sixth man? 4th option?

I don't see this happening, unless the C's are willing to part with one of their "Big Three"

I could see the Celtics letting Ray Allen go to sign a guy like Maggette. It would be a move that could keep them in contention a little longer, though I don't know how Maggette would work out at SG.

Damn, Ainge is really really trying to fix his reputation.

I could see Maggette saying " it" for a year and playing in Boston.

So because there isn't a news story on the Spurs making offers that means they haven't?

    Fail.

Your talking about a guy who has rotted his entire career away on the Clippers. I doubt he cares about rings. He's going where the money is.

Sometimes players that sacrafice for a year, can cash in on a bigger contract the next year.

    Stephen Jackson
    James Posey

It happens, and it wouldn't shock me if Maggette did it.

Will he do it? Probobly not.

I don't think they have Posey's bird rights.

NON-BIRD EXCEPTION -- This is also a component of the Veteran Free Agent exception. Players who qualify for this exception are called "Non-Qualifying Veteran Free Agents" in the CBA. They are veteran free agents who are neither Qualifying Veteran Free Agents nor Early Qualifying Veteran Free Agents, either because they haven't met the criteria, or because they are Early Bird free agents following the second season of their rookie scale contract and whose team renounced the Early-Bird exception. This exception allows a team to re-sign its own free agent to a salary starting at 120% of the player's salary in the previous season, 120% of the minimum salary, or the amount needed to tender a qualifying offer (if the player is a restricted free agent -- see question number 36), whichever is greater. Raises are limited to 8% of the salary in the first year of the contract, and contracts are limited to five seasons when this exception is used.

Yeah, that could mean about $3.85 million for Posey without cutting into the MLE.

Wow Celtics are playing with serious fire here. They need to keep Posey first. Whether Magette comes heres or not wont be a blow to the Celts le defense. Losing a guy like James Posey would be devestating. I dont mind landing Cory but not at the expense of losing Posey.
