A bundle of money -- possibly $100,000 -- thrown out of a vehicle by a suspected drug dealer being chased by cops caused traffic to come to a standstill on Loop 410 East this afternoon as drivers stopped and made a dash for the cash.
San Antonio police Sgt. Gabe Trevino said the SAPD gang unit in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration were following the suspected drug dealer when a chase began as a man threw a box of bills out of the window of his vehicle near the U.S. 281 exit.
Traffic stopped and people began grasping for the money, Trevino said.
One officer at the scene said he even saw the driver of a school bus stop and take what money he could. The officer said he was unsure what school district the bus driver was from.
Trevino said the money, which apparently belonged to the suspected drug dealer, was in multiple denominations and possibly totaled $100,000.
Trevino said the Police Department's gang unit called off its involvement in the chase to tend to the traffic problem, while the DEA agents continued their pursuit.
By 3:30 p.m., the money that was left on the roadway and had not been taken by passers-by was cleared from the roadway and traffic was moving freely. Some of the money was pulled out of a storm drain along the roadway. It is unclear how the cash got into the drain.
Trevino said the money is evidence in a federal case. He said the DEA informed SAPD that anyone who keeps the money is in possession of evidence in a federal crime and keeping the money is a violation of the law.
The suspect was caught by DEA agents after the car he was in collided with two other vehicles at the intersection of Broadway and Wetmore.
Trevino said no one was injured in the collision.

you gotta be freaking kidding me, the one day I choose to go shopping and don't take 281 to go home![]()
It was actually on 410, NEAR the 281 exit. I went to lunch, and took 281 to 410 and back the same way again. It must have happened later than 1:30 PM.
Fantastic reference, my good bear.
