Utah Jazz: Maggette drawing lots of attention

The Jazz's ability to land longtime Los Angeles Clippers swingman Corey Maggette is looking more and more like a long shot with each passing day.
As many predicted earlier this week, the Golden State Warriors — with newfound money after point guard Baron Davis opted out of his contract and committed to the Los Angeles Clippers — now are in the mix for Maggette.
Multiple reports on Friday suggested as much.
The Philadelphia Inquirer on Friday also cited an unidentified "NBA source" as saying the 76ers, one of the few teams with money to spend under the league's team-payroll salary cap, "had made contact with" Maggette "and hope to speak with him next week."
Meanwhile, the San Antonio Express-News reported Friday that "it appears (Maggette) is heading into the holiday weekend a little bit closer to becoming a Spur than he was before the week began," and that an unidentified "source close to the negotiations said Thursday that, though no deal is imminent, talks between the Spurs and Maggette are serious and the interest is mutual."
According to the Express-News, "the Spurs are believed to have offered Maggette a multi-year deal, starting with their $5.8 million midlevel exception."
Elsewhere Friday, the Boston Globe — one day after a competing newspaper denied its report that Maggette had received an offer from Boston — reported that "a day after talking with Celtics coach Doc Rivers, a longtime family friend ... Maggette said he is seriously considering an offer to join the NBA champions (and that) he is still in awe about being contacted by the Celtics and has been mulling over their contract offer as well as interest from several other teams."
The Globe again cited an unidentified "NBA source" as saying the Celtics offered Maggette "the full midlevel exception," which is a five-year deal starting at about $5.8 million next season.
It was unclear Friday if Orlando remains interested in Maggette, even though he had reported interest in the Magic when the NBA's summer shopping market opened late last Monday night. But one other team not initially mentioned in Maggette reports, the Cleveland Cavaliers, now is said by multiple accounts to have interest as well.
The Jazz?
They continue to be listed in multiple reports as being among the half-dozen or so teams with legitimate interest — and with good reason, according to indications from within the organization.
But the capped-out Jazz are armed with nothing more than a midlevel-exception deal, and if Maggette were to spurn Golden State's and Philadelphia's overtures and sign instead with an over-the-cap team, it seems he may be more inclined to take San Antonio's or Boston's money than Utah's.
Free agents cannot actually sign contracts until Wednesday at the earliest.
JAZZ LIKE JOHNSON? The Rocky Mountain News on Friday listed the Jazz among several teams "said to be interested" in 33-year-old unrestricted free agent Anthony Johnson, along with the likes of Denver, Cleveland, Miami, Orlando and Phoenix.
Johnson completed last season with Sacramento, following a February trade from Atlanta. The Jazz are known to previously have had interest in him.
Utah's two current reserve point guards, Ronnie Price and Jason Hart, both have played previously for the Kings.
To make room for Johnson or any other free agent, the Jazz would have to either opt against bringing back restricted free-agent swingman C.J. Miles or clear a roster spot some other way.
SNYDER WORKING OUT: After the Minnesota Timberwolves declined to tender a qualifying offer to Kirk Snyder, the ex-Jazz guard — one of Utah's two first-round draft choices in 2004 — has been reduced to working out for the Boston Celtics this week, along with the likes of David Harrison, Darius Miles and Patrick O'Bryant.
"A lot of these guys we have just liked, and they're trying to continue their careers," Celtics basketball boss and former BYU star Danny Ainge told the Boston Globe. "But there's a lot of guys in the basketball world and a lot more we're going to look at.
"There's no difference than if these guys were playing in a summer league. That's basically the situation we have right now."
MISC.: Orlando free agent Carlos Arroyo has drawn some degree of interest from the Nuggets, and the ex-Jazz point guard was listed Friday by the New York Post as being among several point guards — along with Tyronn Lue, Roger Mason, Eddie House, Sebastian Telfair and Jannero Pargo — in whom the New York Knicks have "expressed interest." But that was before the Knicks on Friday agreed to terms on a two-year deal with Chicago Bulls guard Chris Duhon and reportedly promised to make Duhon their starting point guard. ... Ex-Jazz forward Louis Amundson is on the roster of Golden State's summer team, which plans to play this month at both the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas and the Jazz-hosted Rocky Mountain Revue. Shooting coach Sidney Moncrief will coach the Warriors' Revue entry. ... The Detroit Pistons' "official" blog spot reported that ex-Jazz point guard Dee Brown would be on Detroit's summer-team roster, but Brown is not listed among those actually playing for the Pistons in the Vegas league.

I agree. If anything, this article actually makes me feel better about our chances - because it gives so many reasons to reasonably rule out another one of the teams vying for Maggette.
Utah is the only place worse to play than San Antonio
Start to feel pissed about this situation. No news from SA office. I hope they really serious about signing him or someone which is good. Im sick and tired w/ Spurs targeting potential ave3rage guy all the time (except Finley at that time). Our free agents alwasy been sucks like . If this year is the same thing then I doubt we will ever repeat, always love SA but dont hope for rings anymore. FO for now

I disagree, Salt Lake City and the state of Utah is gorgeous. I'd rank Memphis, Milwaukee, OKC and Oakland (Golden State) below San Antonio, though.

Oakland is in a rather nice area of Cali, namely San Fran. Also, Milwaukee isn't terrible either, Wisconsin is a beautiful state.
Wrong. Oakland is across the bay from SF and is a very bad, low-income, high-minority, high-crime, high-drug city....one of the worst in the US. Milwaukee has improved some in recent years, but remains an old, dingy/dilapidated (in many parts) manufacturing city with an awful winter climate. San Antonio is certainly no Eden-esque paradise, but there is no way that I'd rank San Antonio below either of those places, nor would I rank SA ahead of Salt Lake City. In fact, SLC continually ranks as one of the top areas to live in the US by Forbes Magazine.

Been monitoring and enjoying the forum lately. Felt compelled to jump in real quick with a comment:
Forget winning, playing with future hall of fame players or coaches, a particular city, etc, players today, including Maggette, will choose the "cash" over everthing. Years back it might have been a "bit" different, but this is today's reality. I'm sure Corey would love to play for the Spurs, most players do, however reality and history have shown players go where the cap room (money) is and spin it one way or another to make it make sense to the media and public.
I think Maggette would fit great here and I'm all for 100% pursuit, but I also agree the Spurs need a few other additions next year to even think about getting back to the Western Finals. All I can say, again from history, is don't get your hopes up. The Spurs will add a few new pieces but generally it's not always who is at the top of our list. Ex. George Hill
Go for Maggette Pop, but don't forget some of the other holes in the ship.

damn i was about to come in here and list reasons why the jazz shouldnt go after maggette, but this is a different article than i anticipated, and its even worst than what i thought it was going to be.

You are making a big mistake in your argument. What might make a good city to you or even on a list by Forbes isn't what makes a city good for NBA players. For decades, Salt Lake City has been ranked the worst by NBA players. That's why they have to overpay free agents. Very, very few players want to play there. , most of them even hate going there on road trips. It's not exactly a mecca for black culture. (And that's not a prejudice statement - it's a fact that the majority of the league is black.) Most NBA players hate Salt Lake City - that's reality.

Brilliant!! I'm pretty sure it was Utah that signed him to his previous offer sheet/ contract, and then the Clipps matched.
They have Boozer now.
Pendejo. The Spurs are a Maggette away from an 09-2010 back to back championship. And I think George Hill and Malik Hairston are a big part of that. The incoming youth will lead the Spurs to their first back to back.
