Maggette, if he ends up signing for the full MLE, will select a team which can offer him the ability to opt out in 2010 and receive from that club (or from another in a sign and trade) the large long-term contract he seeks. Boston will most likely be unable to so that. Detroit could, but that's assuming Wallace and McDyess would be gone.

Among those offering the MLE, only the Spurs and Magic can offer Maggette that scenario. And I expect him to sign with one of those if he signs for the MLE.

Update: A Celtics source continued to insist that the team has made no formal offer to Maggette, the Boston Herald reports.
Recommendation: The source said that the former Clipper is simply aware that the Celtics have a mid-level exception available. The other newspaper in town, the Boston Globe, reported an offer made and that Maggette is seriously considering it. However, the Celtics don’t have a starting job for Maggette, who is being courted by several other teams that can.

The Pistons don't want to use their entire midlevel exception on one player, but they may have a change of heart if they feel they can land Corey Maggette, according to Booth Newspapers.

Detroit has spoken to Maggette's representatives at least once this offseason, inquiring as to whether he would be willing to sign for roughly $5.8 million.

A number of winners, including the Celtics, are targeting Maggette, who seems prepared to take less money.

"If you want to win, you have to make sacrifices," Maggette told the Boston Globe.

Well this takes the Sixers and the Warriors out of the picture. I don't see the Pistons as a good fit. I still think that its between us, Boston and Orlando with us and Orlando having the most to offer. The family ties to Boston could still land him there though.

I ain't moving on until the ink on a contract...

I have my doubts about CM coming to the Spurs too, but I never thought Finley would've chose the Spurs over those other contenders either, some 3 years ago.

If either of them offered him a deal starting at $9-10M, he'd sign in a heartbeat. What's he supposed to say? "I'll go for the money first, and if it isn't there, I'll sign with the best team available."?

It's all about the Benjamins. They'll say otherwise, but it's just spin.

i highly doubt it. i think he really wants to start winning now. i believe there comes a time in your career when you come to the conclusion that you have all the money you need right now in life, and all thats left is just to win.

cmon its not like be playing for free for 5.8 mill for 1 year.

Despite the fact that he'll be making about 2mil less than he would have been making had he not opted out, I wonder if other factors may come into play. Factors such as no state income tax in Texas and the additional earnings from a deep playoff run.

Boston and Detroit are bad picks for Maggette if he's looking to cash in in 2010, neither team will offer him the playing time to sustain the numbers he's been putting up recently. Not that he'll put up those same number in SA but they'll be closer to what they are now then if he's a back up.

Detroit makes less sense for Maggette than Boston. Besides, doesn't Detroit want to play their younger group more?

I'm so sorry spurs fans but it ain't gonna happen. He is not going to sign and play in San Antonio. What top free agent ever picks to play in the entertaining city of San Antonio? None.

I guess you all forgot how our team was built. Through the NBA Draft!. Not Free Agency. We get our role players with free agency. Only we will ever get a star from free agency, is if we sign him when he is nothing then blooms into a star in our system....but then we can lose the chance of him going to LA or NY.

So do not get your panties into a bunch if the Spurs lose out on the other 5.0.

He will pick Bos or Orl or if any team offers him more than MLE he goes there.

Spurs need to sign a player like Azubuike, somebody under the radar and will not cause any problems in the locker room.

Spurs need to step up in the draft department the next 2 years...

The time to prepare for the Duncan-Less era is coming real soon, they need to find a potential star.

Thing is not sure Pop gives a cause once Duncan is gone so is Pop..book it

and also book maggette NOT wearing a spur uni

its not always about the money, there are still plenty of examples of players taking pay cuts, i hope maggette realizes that we can offer him the best role among all the contenders.

Again, I don't see how people can leave our own FAs off of the list when they make the argument that we can't attract top-notch players. Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili both entered FA as top targets from numerous teams - yet the Spurs were able to sign them. The reason that the Spurs have had a tough time bringing in the big name FAs has more to do with cap space IMHO. Only once in the past decade have we had the money to chase a big name and both of the targets ended up re-signing with their previous teams for more money than the Spurs could have offered.

I know that it's not a lock that Maggette is coming to the Spurs, but from everything that I have read we are one of the top teams in consideration. Why do you wanna rain on our parade?
