Since Maggette is off the board the spurs should try to:

Sign one of these guys- Luol Deng/J.R. Smith/Ricky Davis.

Sign one of these guys- Jarvis Hayes/Carlos Delfino/Matt Barnes/Bostjan Nachbar/Kareem Rush.

Sign one of these guys- Earl Barron/Francisco Elson (Because the spurs need length and athleticism and that's what these guys are, plus they will be real cheap).

Also resign one of these guys and just one: Brent Barry/Michael Finley

Also if the spurs resign Kurt Thomas, trade him or trade Oberto and Bonner for another quality big possibly Nenad Kristic since he's on the market or someone that can contribute.

I agree if we stick with the same team again we are not going to win a championship, We need to go after some young talent like JR Smith, Ben Gordon, Matt Barnes,Josh Childress or Abuzukie. if i were the spurs i would just throw the whole MLE at one of those players right now why not? What do we got to loose?

can't afford Luol Deng, J R Smith definitely agree, but throw in Childress and Mason also. Forget Barron and Elson, not worth the trouble, try and trade for someone young, underated and obviously has development potential e.g. David Lee or Sean Williams now that New Jersey is overloaded in his position. Alternatively sign Robertas Javtokas or Gist if he shows potential in the summer league.

it wont matter which of the players you have listed above coming here....that wouldnt put us over to the next level...our problem is downlow, we still cant stop noone even if we got a guy who could score night in and night out......our bigs, still excuse my language (suck)....here is our biggest problem after having (besides duncan of course) the worst combo of bigs in the wests top tiers..........our top tier players dont get enough rest...they go off into the countries and play their hearts out while the rest of the nba players kick back(while still staying in shape)...the spurs made a great sword yrs ago, its sides were very sharp and the tip deadly this sword could cut thru any team...now that sword is dull, and the only part of the sword that is meaningful is the tip....FA aint over yet, but i dont see the big we need....i could care less about a wing or point....its our bigs who are horrible and dull....noone wants a dull blade...and that my friends is all we have....enough to make a game of it, a season of it...but next yrs. PO, if we comeback with this same crew, we will get thrown out again.....oh and theses days if in case yall didnt notice.......its hard to get players to play defense...and as the ages pass on...its getting harder and harder to find those players...cory went to g.s. for the money and the time of his life....imagine having fun, having no expectations, playing for a coach the nba thinks is a god, and wont send him away...never having to play defense....GS is like joining a YMCA........alot of fun with alot of players who run and shoot...run and shoot...only the YMCA is paying ya millions..

Keep Thomas (this is a no-brainer), Barry (NOT Finley), grab Sean Williams and sign Aza preferably, or Barnes.

Not the re-tooling I'd hoped for, but enough for another shot at the trophy.

Maggette played us along until he got what he wanted [MO $$$] pres. Just wish he hadn't lied about "sometimes you have to sacrifice to win". He should have been honest and said' " I've been a Clipper for 8 years, winning is overrated. Just show me the money & I guarantee the fans a lottery pick every year". That said we should resign Thomas and Barry---they contributed last season. Bringing back Finley as a starter is a death wish. We just need that one player we can plug into the #2 spot so that Manu can be Manu. We need anyone more versatile than Finley--- someone who can drive, run the floor, rebound a little and pass creatively. I know Pop likes Finley's professionalism but he's one dimensional---if his shot isn't falling, which have to come off screens or open looks, he doesn't belong on the floor. The great unanswered question for the Spurs fans is HOW READY IN MAHIMNI TO CONTRIBUTE THIS SEASON. If he's good to go our options in FA become imporved

What the Spurs should do now?

    Acquire Matt Barnes
    or
Acquire Smith and Najera from Denver (possible S&T)
    or
    Pray

Why wouldn't the Clippers outbid everyone for JR Smith now? They have nothing but cash and a JR/Baron backcourt might sell a few tickets in LA.

This guy has lifelong Clipper written all over him.

Reportedly they are chasing after a bigger RFA - and why wouldn't they? I think the combination of Baron and the other Smith would sell a lot more tickets AND make them a MUCH better team.

The Spurs will probably not mess with any restricted FA and will look at getting an unrestricted one... They will take the safe route so they don't have to wait around and get burned again... they know if they wait too long that anyone good will be gone.

The problem is most of the good UFAs have already committed. I would much rather them take a chance on signing J.R. Smith to an offer sheet and re-signing both KT and Barry while they wait.

I'm still confident that the spurs will make a good move in free agency. I think everyone, myself included got a little too excited about Maggette. When is the last time any NBA player averaged 22.1 ppg and took a MLE contract.

I think Buford and Pop will have prepared as if they were not going to get Maggette. These guys have been around a long time they are smarter than that to just cross their fingers for Maggette. I'm sure they knew the scenario, obviously a no brainer if Magette was willing but that is not the case.

We just need a tweak and we are back representing the WC. We need to keep a veteran like Barry or Finley, which I pray is Barry. Finley has just really fallen off. We need to also keep Kurt Thomas. I think this will be a more productive year for him as far as gelling with the guys and playing with the team.

Just a couple of young guys to fit in the rotation. A JR Smith, or Abuzukie, Childress, Sean Williams or a Matt Barnes or Najera. You can forget about guys Deng, Gordon. To expensive for us.

We won't be able to get Azuibuke for less than about 4 mil.. and Delfino will take more than what's left to get. Any swingmen left know that they are very valuable right now and will be looking to get paid...

azubuike for more than 4 Mil?

i doubt it for that much, but no way, then the warriors can keep him. id rather sign someone else for that much.

Delfino gives me a good feelin being with the spurs. i know his rep with people here on spurstalk but i get a feeling he can be a great player with us. maybe he needs a tough coach with great players around him. i just look at him and see a potentially younger brent barry in him.

This is the spot we are in for trading almost every first round pick the last 8 yrs....looks like we are gonna be stuck with Barry and Fin.....What the heck would we want James Posey for? Old slow 3 pt shooter, dont we have a buch of those already.....And D Wright from Miami, he will be a good player in a couple years but does nothing for us now.

    Invest heavily in top-secret time-machine R&D.

I'm thinking D-Rob and Gervin could be of use.

Letting Scola go was another totally bone-headed move. After ALL those freaking years of waiting.....

And if Hill and Mahinmi can make respectable bench contributions, I'd have to agree with you. I think the Spurs would have a look at it next year.

At the inflated rate guys are getting paid nowadays, no way the Spurs could get those two so cheaply. I'd be surprised now if they were to get Delfino for the FULL MLE!!
