It doesn't make sense to me that the Spurs are creating cap space for the summer of 2010 when everyone and their grandma know that the big name free agents are very unlikely to sign with the Spurs (see Kidd, Jason or Hill, Grant or even Maggette, Corey).
So I wonder whether the '2010 plan' is actually geared towards the trade deadline during the '09-'10 season. That's when other teams will be shedding salary to get enough cap space to sign one of the superstar FA's.
Sounds like the perfect setup for the Spurs to send out expiring contracts and get serious talent in return. Guys like Tayshaun Prince, Caron Butler, Kevin Martin, and Gerald Wallace could be available for beans.
What do you think? This sounds like a classic Spurs move to me.

They'll likely turn trades down this year just like last year. All I'm saying is to not overlook a good trade just to protect yourself for 2010.

They could have traded for Mags last year and made a much stronger push with him. Had they found some post season success I think the odds of Mags seeing first hand how great it is to be on a team like SA his odds of sticking around and resigning would have been good.
Happens all the time. No one wants to come here. Once they're here they get it and want to stick around.
I can only think of one solid player in DA that bolted after being part of the team.
I agree, no big name from the 04 draft is going to sign with the spurs even for the max. I wonder if there is a list with all the FA that year. I expect the Spurs to distrubute their cash over a number of good role players.
I know some fans are a little too optimistic to the point of delusional, but I read someone post something the other day that was a very good point.
Acquiring a very good role player or a star later on in his career is one thing. But, if you think about it, how appealing is it for a star player in his prime to join a team to be the fourth or at best third option on the team, and not get touches in crunchtime?
I think it's a very valid point. Now, I know Spurs fans really don't believe they're getting a LeBron or Dwyane Wade. But, even the stars a step down. A Joe Johnson or Josh Smith or Gerald Wallace or whoever else who has star talent. It's one thing to sacrifice a little money to be on a winning team. But, if you know you're a star, would you go somewhere where you know you're definitely at least three or four heads down on the totem pole? It's Duncan then Parker then Ginobili. Even as Duncan and Ginobili age and as unselfish as they already are, they are still the foundation. They are still the core. They are still "the go-to guys." How easy is it to get a star type player to buy in to be the fourth option? That's why Bruce Bowen is valuable. That's why you need a banger and bruiser who doesn't need touches on offense next to Duncan.
Maybe some of you still think it could work adding another star. I'm not sure it can. Three stars is the limit.
Pretty good points. Also, being they are all at different positions makes the spread fairly thin, because they would all be on the floor in crunch-time. Therefore, even if you threw someone into a different position (SF or C) they would be the deferred option. Someone has to want to be the 4th option in the waning minutes of game. They might get 30-minutes during the regular season, but come playoff time you know who the most touches will be going to. I think there is a possibility though. If you can take first-option players (such as Garnett, Allen, Pierce) and make them 2nd or 3rd options, there is reason to believe you can take a 2nd-option player and make him a 4-th option. Now, does that person exist?
Here is the real plan we are going to tank the 2010 season so we get a 1-3 pick in the draft and then sign a good FA with our nice cap space...
I don't really think another solid guy would be the forth option.
Even though we say TD is option number 1 its really Parker who probably gets more points than whats really needed due to Manu only being effective when he consistantly keeps his minutes under 30 per game and TD isn't stretching the defense nearly as much as he used to with the decline of Finley, Horry and Barry.
I think a guy could easily come in and average nearly 20ppg and be awefully close to the go to guy. TD has already relugated himself to about 17 or so ppg. Bring Parkers numbers back down with an extra scoring option and do a better job controlling Manu's minutes and you could easily make a case for a guy like Mags to lead the team in scoring.
We can't make any good trade because now we only can trade Manu or Parker to get good players.We can't get anything good with Barry,Oberto,Thomas,Bonner or similar.
Manu would be a good option.31,tired,maybe inured.He's amazing but we could get 2 or 3 good young players for him.IMO it will be the right move.But I don't care if we trade Parker.
The only important it's who we can't get for them?
I would not be surprised in all honesty if Holt sold the team in 2012 or so.
