But I'm deliberate in choosing the word “notoriously.” I have to wonder whether the West Side's crime notoriety has more to do with sensational, crime blotter news coverage than actual crime itself. If it weren't for the crime du jour coverage, most local television newscasts would have to fill their airtime, fire up their live trucks and launch their helicopters with information that actually benefited the community. The WDC reports finds that crime activity in the West Side is actually lower than for the city at large for every 1,000 residents.
They keep using the caveat "per 1k residents" so I'd assume that there is more crime in that area but its proportional to the increase in population. Someone should do a study on the crime rate per bottle of pepper spray though.
