If all y'all would pull your heads out of your asses, you would have read from many sources months ago that the Shiites' ethnic cleaning the Sunnis either out of Bagdad on into ethnically Balkanized, wall-off/check-pointed Badgad neighborhoods, which was completed last summer, plus Petraeus buying peace from the Sunnis, $24M/month for 80,000 Sunni fighters, were major reasons for the dropoff in violence last summer.
The violence was already decreasing in Dec 2006, 2 months before the surge started.
Petraeus also switched from extremely aggressive, door-kicking tactics last spring (a record number of US military deaths in 2007) because he was losing too many men. Petraeus' aggression got lots of pushback from the Iraqis. Huge mistake by Petraeus.
While ankle-biter McFlop trashes and cheap-shots HUSSEIN every other sentence before friendly audiences, HUSSEIN, on the world stage, was VERY restrained in his M/E speeches vs what he could have said about dubya/McSenile M/E policy, not that classlessness by McFlop would bother any right wingers.
It's a very complicated situation, but the WH/McSenile propaganda about the escalation, exclusivley, working or "winning" is of course outright, simplistic lying by denying the above factors.

Ethnic cleansing doesn't seem like reduced violence to those that are "cleansed".
Maybe just the result of far fewer people results in less violence?
I think we can all agree that the Holocaust reduced violence in Germany. The mass slaughtering of those pesky Tutsis by the Hutu reduced violence in Rwanda. Hopefully, the continued slughter in Darfur will continue, and if enough people are killed, by gosh they'll finally be at peace.

Agreed, but it's the same sort of Coultergiest types who ridiculously insist upon calling the candidate Hussein and insinuating all that comes with it. My apologies, though, I didn't realize it was off-limits to poke fun at extremists in this forum.
I suppose that any insinuations about extremism among conservatives should be understood to apply to all conservatives, while insinuations of extremism among liberals are just nuanced criticisms of those who actually hold those views.
