    (Not sure if already posted...)

Dave Berri of Wages of Wins breaks down Vegas Summer league statistically and says Gist was the 3rd best player behind Dorsey and Love, and then after Gist it's a sharp fall off.

    The statistics:

    http://www.wagesofwins.com/LasVegas08.html

(Malik was rated 20 out of 32 and Hill 26 out of 32.)

    The article:

    http://dberri.wordpress.com/2008/07/...vegas-numbers/

    An excerpt:

"Table One presents an evaluation of each player who was

    a. chosen in the 2008 draft, and

    b. played at least 50 minutes in the 2008 Las Vegas Summer League

Each player is evaluated in terms of PAWS48, or Position Adjusted Win Score per 48 minutes. In essence, each player’s Vegas numbers were evaluated in terms of Win Score, and this number was compared to what an average NBA player - at the player’s position - would have done in 48 minutes. Positive numbers indicate the player was above average (and negative numbers mean… well, I think you can figure that out).

Of the 32 players who satisfied each of the above conditions, only eight (or 25%) was above average. In other words, most rookies played badly - by NBA standards - in Vegas.

Of the eight “good” players, only three - Kevin Love, Jerryd Bayless, and D.J. Augustin - were taken in the first round. The remaining five above average performers were second round choices, with Maarty Leunen and James Gist taken in the last few picks of the draft.

When we look at the “bad”, or below average players, we find a few more lottery picks. O.J. Mayo, Joe Alexander, and Anthony Randolph were each below average performers."

Very encouraging. He's starting to look like the Paul Millsap of the 08 draft.

Gist looks great in SL and I hope he ends up a steal BUT let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. alot of guys (eg. Nate Robinson) look great in SL and then come down to earth during the regular season.

I think the lack of any real Spurs related news, a slow offseasn, plus our needs for a long, athletic 3 have made us a little bit delerious. I hope I'm wrong and that he ends up being the new Horry but let's wait and see.

one thing i noticed about gist during the SL as compared to hill, tolliver and ian......hill,tolliver,powell,green,hairston etc all got better as they played together (from game to game).....gist just played better....i figure hes gonna be good, but he will have to be molded into a team player(spurs type).... ill say this for sure, imo giving the chance, it wont take as long for gist to blend in as it has Ian.......it aint easy being cheesy

Interesting that the smaller the position the more it under performs which suggests two things 1) his methodology might be slightly flawed 2) the wing positions have a steeper learning curve...Which means a center that performs well under this analysis may not be as good as the stats seem to suggest and poorly performing guard might be better than the stats.

    Centers: 0.229 10.993
    Power Forwards: 0.218 10.447
    Small Forwards: 0.155 7.444
    Shooting Guards: 0.129 6.205
    Point Guards: 0.134 6.422

There is only one possible explanation for Gist finishing third: Dorsey and Love are aliases for Norris and Bauer.

Disagree. Nate Robinson has been a very solid NBA player.

Hairston didn't look too good in Vegas, but Hill was worse--couldn't hit a shot if his life depended on it. It wasn't until the RMR that Hill found his shot (sort of).

True. Article is based off their stats too.
