I've lost track of how many current and former Dubya administration officials have been accused of breaking the law they were supposed to protect...anyone have a clue?
NY TimesSenior aides to former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales broke the law by using politics to guide their hiring decisions for a wide range of important department positions, slowing the hiring process at critical times and damaging the department’s credibility and independence, an internal report concluded Monday.
The report, prepared by the Justice Department’s inspector general and its internal ethics office, singles out for particular criticism Monica Goodling, a young lawyer from the Republican National Committee who rose quickly through the ranks of the department to become a top aide to Mr. Gonzales.
Ms. Goodling, who testified before Congress in May 2007 at the height of the scandal over the firings of nine United States attorneys, introduced politics into the hiring process in a systematic way that cons uted illegal misconduct, the report found.
Last month, the inspector general, Glenn A. Fine, released a separate report that found a similar pattern of politicized hiring at the Justice Department in reviewing applications from young lawyers for the honors and intern programs. The new report released Monday goes much further, however, in do enting pervasive evidence of political hiring for some of the department’s most senior career, apolitical positions, including immigration judges and assistant United States attorneys.
The report places blame squarely on Alberto aide....Monica Gooling, the one person granted immunity...how convenient................

Conyers threatens perjury charges against Gonzales

The HillHouse Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) on Monday said he would consider perjury charges against former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and two other former senior officials in the Department of Justice (DoJ).
Conyers was reacting to a new internal DoJ Inspector General report on the politicization of hiring practices at the department.
In a joint statement with Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.), Conyers said that the DoJ Inspector General’s report showed that “that the cost to our nation of these apparent crimes was severe.” Qualified individuals “were rejected for key positions” in the fight against terrorism “for no reason other than political whim,” the statement said.
He said his committee would investigate whether Gonzales; his former chief of staff, Kyle Sampson; or former DoJ White House liaison Monica Goodling committed perjury in sworn testimony delivered before the committee last year.
Conyers needs to STFU already.....how many times can you go to the well with the same game plan before even the acussed start...
Honestly, this whole thing simply demonstrates to me how morally bankrupt the right is.
The thing that gets me is that even if the people involved thought it was legal, there is no way in any ethical person would have thought basing hiring for the positions on purely ideological measures would have cleared any basic sense of ethics.
