This needs a thread especially considering the large contingent of Aussie posters on SpursTalk these days.

    What do we think?

My head says USA by 35, my heart says USA by 10 and my imagination says tie game with 5 minutes left

Bogut and Anstey will need to be perimeter threats to draw Howard/Bosh out of the paint a little bit to open it up for Mills/Newley. When Anstey/Bogut are on court at the same time, Bogut needs to work down low and try get the US bigs in foul trouble.

Aussie need to control the ball and make the US play a halfcourt style, which has proved almost impossible for any team. They will need to hit at 50%+ from 3 and hope the US is stone cold from the FT and 3pt. Foul them so the LeBron/Dwight/Wade dunks are kept to a minimum.

Play rough, tangle up with them at any chance you get, push, pull, slide knees into them, all the dirty that makes Bruce Bowen so good

Basically, it's mission impossible. If Aussie lose, I'll be proud of them so long as they put in 100%. This USA team is truly amazing and I am really enjoying watching them play. After Australia, I'm rooting for them all the way.

    Go Boomers!

PS - For the Aussies reading this... SBS is playing most of the other QF's today.

    Croatia vs Spain 2:30 - 4:15 (WST)
    China vs Lith - 5:30 - 6:30 (WST)
Argentina vs Greece - 10:00 (WST)

All WA time... I'm particularly looking forward to Greece vs Argentina, and being played in full. to you SBS!

Nice summary, MI21. Yup, our only chance lies in beating them less, looking after the ball, playing impeccable transition D, and hitting 50%+ from 3 pt range.

    USA by 26.

Oh, and that Argie v Greece game should be a cracker!

I dont know about the aussies having any chance at beating the US but I must say I always root for Kickert and Patty Mills because they play (or have played) for my moms alma mater St marys in moraga which is like 10 min from my hometown...I think mills has a decent shot at playing in the NBA, he has the quicks, the athleticism to do so and he seems to have a swagger about him that most college freshman (now soph) dont have. And watching him in the exhibition game vs the US he played very well, never looking outmatched.

As long as they bring that "Shane Heal v Charles Barkley" at ude and stick it up them, i don't care if they win or lose! We pretty much got the worst opening round draw possible, so there isn't really any hope of medaling again, but it will be interesting to see how we go. Bogut/Anstey v Howard/Boozer will be interesting and i'd like to see how Bruton and Miles handle the full court pressure.

A lot of the American journalists have been going on about Australia's at ude, and 'fight' - so hopefully we don't let them down!

    Go Australia.

May the best team win. Hopfully Team USA.

Australia is one of the very few nations I respect in this world.

Australia will need to take incredible care of the ball to even make it close. I don't expect it to happen.

    I agree.

That is the main task for Australia, to handle any pressure defense the US put at them. A good thing for Australia is that they don't have any stiffs who can't put the ball on the floor. Our big guys are pretty good on the dribble and with decisions, especially Bogut, he is really an incredible ball handler for his size. I worry about Bruton to start the game though, I've always thought he was a bit iffy with his handle and in the game against Lithuania when faced with a bit of full court pressure, Aussie died in the ass and lost 10pts off of there lead.

If, and it's a giant ing if, Australia can handle the pressure defense and actually get into the half court sets with some decent time left on the shot clock, they will be able to score against the US. We have a crew of good shooters, and I don't think anyone on the US can stay in front of Mills. Whether he is able to finish or not is another story. Our half court sets tend to feature quite a lot of off the ball movement, back screening, swinging of the ball and long off ball routes for our 3pt shooters to get them open in the corners. This is generally either feast or famine, which is a tradition of Goorjian lead teams. If they forget about Bogut down low, I'll be pissed. 1 on 1 he can score against any US bigs no problem. We also have some awkward looking dudes that while they look like pasty unathletic white dudes, will surprise you with some of there moves.

That said, I really rate this US team... and I would be surprised if Aussie get within 25...

Mills looked really good in the last game the played. The problem with using that game as any type of barometer is that the US really did look bored and they have looked stronger with each consecutive game they have played in this tourney. I expect a huge run to start with some suffocating traps and all around defense. Maybe Kobe will even pull his head out of his ass.

"Everyones trying to make a case for australia, well they got within nine. They are going to pay for getting within nine, it's going to be a painful game."

Alex Flannigan - "I thought australia might be able to play them tough."

Snapper - "HAHAHAHAHAHA, If the win is less than 21 I will be shocked."

Gasol is absolutely dominating. I haven't seen him move this fluidly ever. Great news if he can have this kind of mobility at the PF position next season.

It would be ideal to see the Aussies establish Bogut down low early. They've done it the last few games getting their inside/out game on song. Leading to better spacing and easier looks from the 3-point line. No doubt Asntey will hang around the perimeter.

Some-one else hitting top form of late and giving the boomers another dimension is Brad Newly . Love his aggresive game of attacking the rim with no fear and he's been hitting some big shots from outside. Hopefully he gets a lot of touches.

Aussie need to control the ball and make the US play a halfcourt style, which has proved almost impossible for any team.
yah Goorjian has gone with two primary ball handlers at the same time in those situations. Usually Mills and Bruton. Protecting the ball against the high pressure full court D that the US put on will go a long way in keeping this game compe ive. Don't like our chances though.

Basically, it's mission impossible. If Aussie lose, I'll be proud of them so long as they put in 100%. This USA team is truly amazing and I am really enjoying watching them play. After Australia, I'm rooting for them all the way.

    Go Boomers!
Very true. Not into moral victories at all but this is the olympics against team USA so im going to make an exception. If the boomers keep the game compe ive and give it their best shot i'll be damn proud. As our american born coach put it

It is like Hoosiers or Rocky. We get a chance to get up to the plate and take a swing at the bigdog. That is the way i look at it. I'm confident we're are going to get out there and play ball
    Come-on Aussie !

this is the game i wanna see how some of the players stack up against american talent

expecially bogut vs whoever = i think bogut is a bust, but the bucks offense is not run through him, under utilise imo just like okafor.

brad newly has done pretty well so far in the tourney, he was drafted in the nba but didnt get signed.

chris anstey a former nba player, who dominates the nbl down under....

patrick mills another tp mold type of player who didnt get drafted.

nielson and anderson makes there trade in europe...

    rest are fukn
