Hall of Fame football player and longtime NFL Players Association executive director Gene Upshaw has died, sources have told Clear Channel.

The former offensive lineman had been fighting pancreatic cancer.

    He was 63.

Upshaw played with the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders from 1967 until 1981. He was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and an 11-time All-Pro.

He also played on two Super Bowl-winning sides.

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987.

Upshaw is survived by his wife, Terri, and sons, Justin, Daniel and Eugene Jr.

Sad.....He did not tell anyone he was dying. For reasons I can't explain I admire that.

"Before he cleans out his office have Paul Tagliabue show you where he keeps Gene Upshaw's leash. By making the docile head of the players union his personal pet, your predecessor has kept the peace without giving players the kind of guarantees other pros take for granted. Try to make sure no one competent ever replaces Upshaw on your watch."
    - Bryant Gumbel
That's all I have to say about Upshaw. He was great for his current players but I've seen countless stories on Real Sports about how the NFL and the NFLPA have done jack in regards to retired and former players.
