    BB Rules - Traveling

At least by FIBA rules. Kobe travel after jeb step. Every and each single time. And even put it on net.

With refereeing like on this 08 Olympics, Tim Duncan would have not be frustrated at all. Look's like FIBA and team USA get to an agreement by not calling those things.

I'm pretty sure in the NBA you get to take a step, jump, land on both feet, then jump again. You can also move by shuffling your feet as long as they don't lose contact with the floor.

No, even according to FIBA rules, jab step is OK, you can't move pivot foot.

The common travel in FIBA vs NBA is the bunny hop. NBA is ok for a bunny hop but not in FIBA. Also in FIBA, you can't move your pivot foot before the ball touches the ground but in NBA you can.

Jab step is not a problem. But with jab step you define your pivot foot. Kobe move the pivot foot every time before he dribble. I am completly ok if they play by NBA rule at Olympics. But then, one can say FIBA players are not used to defend such offensive moves.

When defender read jab step, by FIBA rules, he knows offender pivot foot is the other one. It is not the case in this video and on court situations.

Where do you see me cry? I am just saying, with not calling those situations Spain team was not in better position. It was in reality not refereeing by FIBA rules.

This is wrong. What Kobe does in that video is a travel for anyone else. I have seen Diaw and Marion pick up that travel call quite alot. This is the same travel that Brent Barry did on the "foul" shot at the end of the Lakers/Spurs game.

I don't think you understand NBA rules...1 foot can move prior to dribbling, the other cannot.

Please tell me which video and at what time Kobe shuffles both feet in the video? Kobe moves only 1 foot before dribbling which is NOT illegal.

How is this the same as Brent Barry's travel? Brent Barry moves BOTH feet before he dribbles (the left one first then the right and then dribble). In which of the videos does Kobe move BOTH feet before dribbling in the video?

Open up your eyes, you can pretty clearly see the shuffling of 2 feet at the 22 second mark for Brent Barry:

In all 3 videos. Kobe, after triple threat position:

    1. moves his right leg - jab step (let say this is basically pivoting, left is pivot foot)
    2. moves his left leg and start the action (he very often even move his right leg again before he puts the ball on the floor)

Yes, this is ok in the NBA, but not OK in FIBA.

In your videos, even watching many times it is hard to tell because it is pretty close so in FIBA they will not call this most of the time. This travel happened alot in the 2004 Olympics but in the 2008 Olympics, they did not call this much. But they also let other players, not just Team USA. Manu does this very same move almost every time too.

Early in the Olympics they called it a couple of times (I think Kobe/Chris Paul) but towards the end of Olympics, they stopped calling this since many USA and International players do this now. It is a very minor call.

It is like moving screens...in FIBA rules it's not allowed but everybody does it anyways.

The officiating in these Olympics was much more "loose" (for all teams, not just USA) than in 2004...in my opinion, this is better and more entertainment.

I am sorry but you are totaly wrong here. This is most definatly NOT permited in the NBA. It is rarely called but it is still against the rules. Kobe travels by moving his pivot foot before dribbling. This is a commonly over looked rule.

A pivot foot is established during two situations. #1 At the end of the dribble AFTER two steps are taken, lifting the pivot foot here is a travel- often considered a third step. You will also see this travel at the end of a post up. #2 Before the dribble. If a player is not moving when he recieves the ball he is given the chance to establish a pivot foot, as Kobe does in these vidoes. His pivot foot is the one he is not moving in the tripple threat position. To leave this position with out traveling the ball must hit the court BEFORE the pivot foot is lifted from the ground. As you can see in these videos Kobes pivot foot clearly leaves the ground before the ball is dribbled. This is rarely noticed or called on the NBA level. I my self call this often much to the chagrin of the high schoolers/ middle schoolers I officiate.

Anyway...... sorry for the typos and misspellings I am to tired to care !

reviewing your post I think you are getting confused by thinking you can switch pivot feet in the triple threat position.

Please show me in the rulebook where this is "definately NOT permitted in the NBA" Why do you think it's never called? Because it is no longer illegal. I'd love to see where the rules say "it's definitely not permitted".

And you still haven't answered the previous post either about Brent Barry's travel being the same as Kobe's travel. Did you just "forget" about this too?

In all 3 videos (there are 4 actualy, but in 4th he just jab step and shot). Kobe

    1. jab step with his right foot, established his left foot as pivot foot
    2. move left foot, pivot foot
    3. dribble

    In all 3 videos. Ok?

    QUOTE]
You need to watch the videos again. Kobe clearly lifts his back foot before the ball touches the court. It is not a "shuffle." You do not understand the rule. Once one foot moves then the second foot can not be lifted from the ground until the ball hits the floor. You can not switch the moving foot. As you say Barry lifts both feet to travel, so does Kobe, however he lifts them both at differant times. Unfortunatly this not permited the rule has nothing to do with keeping atleast on foot on the ground at all times, kobe does to this but it does not matter.
I am going to go over this step by step for the Kobe videos and the Brent Barry situation and hopefully it will be a little more clear.

    Kobe:
    1. Kobe catches the ball, both feet start on the ground.
    2. Kobe drags his right foot back at this time his right foot leaves the ground
    3. Kobe lifts his right foot again to jab step
    4. Kobe brings his right foot in to pump fake it is off the ground
To this point we do not have a travel
    5. Kobe plants his right foot to drive
    6. Kobes pushes off his left foot, and it leaves the ground - NOW we have a travel as soon as this happens the call should be made
    7. Kobe dribbles the ball but about half a second to late.

    Brent
    1. He receives the ball jumping lands with both feet on the ground
    2. Lifts his left foot to pump fake, establishing his right foot as his pivot foot
    3. Fisher Jumps in the air
    4. Barry's right foot lifts slightly off the ground - travel is here
    5. Split second later he is fouled and the ball hits the ground.

It should be explained much earlyer to basketball players but you can NEVER lift your pivot foot with out traveling it is the same in a post up or a drive the travel occurs due to the lifting of the pivot foot.

I encourage you to look closely at the videos and you will see this happens in both.

This is where you are wrong, there is nothing illegal about lifting the back foot (pivot foot) before the ball touches the court in the NBA. Kobe only has to START the dribble before moving his pivot foot which he does and that is not a travel.

Brent Barry, on the other hand, shuffles both feet then initiates his dribble which is a travel.

They do the same thing rule wise! What barry does with his back foot it the EXACT same as what Kobe does with his front foot. If you dont see this I give up. It is a violation. It is a travel. Any ref will tell you the same thing. I can see you are not going to understand so I give up!
