Palin had a cop fired for personal reasons..

For most of her tenure as governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin has enjoyed widespread popularity and a reputation as a maverick who refused to stand by fellow Alaska Republicans facing their own ethics scandals.

But the 44-year-old Palin, who was selected as Sen. John McCain's running mate today, is now the focus of her own state ethics investigation as part of the so-called "Troopergate" scandal, a bizarre controversy involving the firing of a state police chief and his reluctance to fire an Alaska state trooper, Palin's former brother-in-law who has been involved in a bitter custody fight with her younger sister.

Just two weeks ago, Palin revealed an audio recording of an aide pressuring the state's Public Safety Department to fire trooper Mike Wooten, the Anchorage Daily News reported.

Palin also acknowledged that her staff had contacted Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan about two dozen times about Wooten. Monegan himself was fired July 11 (the dismissal was "out of the blue," he told reporters) and he later said that he was pressured by Palin's staff and family to get rid of Wooten, a trooper based in Palmer, Alaska.

After weeks of denying she, or anyone from her office, pressured former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan to fire state trooper Michael Wooten, Wednesday, Governor Sarah Palin had to backtrack.

I love it when the leader for responsible government, Ted Stevens, vouches for Palin's ethics! Pure gold.

    Yeah, it's all propaganda

Palin's sister got a divorce from a State Trooper a couple years ago, they had/have an ongoing custody battle. Since the divorce, Palin and her family have put in something like 25 complaints to the troopers about the Ex. The troopers investigated, found 3 of them to be true, and he was disciplined during the adminsitration before Palin's. That should have been the end of it, but Palin took office and in the first year of her administration there were at least 25 calls made to higher ups in the State Troopers and to the Commisioner of Public Safety putting pressure on them to fire the trooper. It is illegal for the governor or any member of her staff to interfere with a non-exempt employee in the state.

When it became clear the head of Public Safety wasn't going to fire the ex-brother in law, and when there were rumours that the troopers might be investigating the pressure being placed on them, Palin fired the Commisioner. She said she fired him because he had a different vision for the direction of the troopers. Then the next day she released a memo with her administrations vision, and it was exactly the same as the fired Commisioner's, the same language was even used. Then she said he wasn't making adequate progress on alcohol issues in bush Alaska, but when he was fired he was offered another job as head of the Alcoholic Beverage Control board, where Palin said he would be able to continue his in his expertise working on alcohol issues in bush Alaska.

The legislature approved and hired a special investigator to look into the whole mess, and the day before he was supposed to start Palin had a press conference indicating that she had had her Attorney General do an investigation to "find out who knew what." They actually had the nerve/lack of brains to say that in the conference. They uncovered an audio tape of one of Palin's top aides, a guy considered her right hand and more important in her administration than the chief of staff, calling a trooper and clearly applying pressure on behalf of the governor. She said she had no idea he did it, that it was hurtful and embarrassing to the state that he would do that, that it was absolutely wrong of him, and then nothing happened to him. He was still on the job for about a week, before the media started pushing hard about why he wasn't fired. So she placed him on PAID administrative leave.

That is where things are now with it. The investigator is doing his investigation, but there are potential several laws that were broken, and at the very least we know she is a vindictive liar, and that her open, honest, transparent anti-corruption image is a sham.

BFD. She's got a long way to go to catch up to hanging out with a domestic terrorist whose only regrets are that he didn't blow up the entire Pentagon and other buildings he bombed.

Seriously, those who live in demostic terrorist laden glass houses shouldn't be throwing stones.

Ted Stevens and others make the state GOP the most corrupt in the nation. Fortunately Palin is not part of their stuff.

Yep, Obama can go after her on that. Sarah Palin isn't qualified, she's just a woman ,um, err, I mean a typical white woman, and she abused her power by trying to get a poor wife beating cop fired.

That's sure to get those PUMA's to warm up to him.

    Is this the new line?

You can't say McCain's addled and doesn't know what he's doing... because he was a POW!

You can't say Palin's totally unqualified... because she has five children!

Go after her at least as much as you did Hillary(and then left her off the ticket)...be sure to let Hilary and all those women know that their job right now is to stand BEHIND you and offer their support...because that's what change is all about.

Tell them that if they can't stand the heat they should get back in the kitchen

Not to mention ask Hillary to give up a shot in 2012.

McCain was mean to not use any lube on you guys. He really was...

The best thing for you guys to do know is be viscious about it, and attack...you know, like you did Hillary, and Bush, because it works so well.

Be sure to let people know how stupid they are...and how little their stupid little downs and states matter...and if they'd just shut up and get out of the way the world would be a better place

I look forward to your next round of pictures...

Today Sarah Palin says (and the media ate it up and repeated the same talking points from the McCain campaign) that she shot down the "Bridge to nowhere" and that they didn't want funding for it. Total and complete lies folks. Will the media ever research facts?

    From today's speech:

I signed major ethics reform. And I appointed both Democrats and independents to serve in my administration. And I championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. In fact, I told Congress -- I told Congress, "Thanks, but no thanks," on that bridge to nowhere.

If our state wanted a bridge, I said we'd build it ourselves. Well, it's always, though, safer in politics to avoid risk, to just kind of go along with the status quo. But I didn't get into government to do the safe and easy things. A ship in harbor is safe, but that's not why the ship is built.

Politics isn't just a game of competing interests and clashing parties. The people of America expect us to seek public office and to serve for the right reasons.

And here was her support for the bridge a couple of years ago and disappointment when Alaska couldn't get the federal funding.
    http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_p...o-nowhere.aspx

Did Palin Really Fight The “Bridge To Nowhere”?
Republicans have been heavily touting Sarah Palin's reformist credentials, with her supposed opposition to Alaska's "Bridge to Nowhere" as Exhibit A. But how hard did she really fight the project? Not very, it seems. Here's what she told the Anchorage Daily News on October 22, 2006, during the race for the governor's seat (via Nexis):

    5. Would you continue state funding for the proposed Knik Arm and Gravina Island bridges?

Yes. I would like to see Alaska's infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now--while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist.

So she was very much for the bridge and insisted that Alaska had to act quickly—the party of Ted Stevens and Don Young might soon lose its majority, after all. By that point, the project was endangered for reasons that had nothing to do with Palin—the bridge had become a national laughingstock, Congress had stripped away the offending earmark, shifting the money back to the state's general fund, and future federal support seemed unlikely. True, after Palin was sworn into office that fall, her first budget didn't allocate any money for the bridge. But when the Daily News asked on December 16, 2006, if she now opposed the project, Palin demurred and said she was just trying to figure out where the bridge fit on the state's list of transportation priorities, given the lack of support from Congress. Finally, on September 19, 2007, she decided to redirect funds away from the project altogether with this sorry-sounding statement:

"Ketchikan desires a better way to reach the airport, but the $398 million bridge is not the answer," said Governor Palin. "Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we are about $329 million short of full funding for the bridge project, and it's clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina Island," Governor Palin added. "Much of the public's at ude toward Alaska bridges is based on inaccurate portrayals of the projects here. But we need to focus on what we can do, rather than fight over what has happened."

Maybe I've missed something, but it sure looks like she was fine with the bridge in principle, never had a problem with the earmarks, bristled at all the mockery, and only gave up on the project when it was clear that federal support wasn't forthcoming. Now, Charles Homans, who knows Alaska well, says Palin's anti-corruption instincts are fairly solid (she sold off the gubenatorial jet upon taking office, for one), and a casual Nexis search suggests that she's fiscally conservative (insofar as that term makes sense in a quasi-socialist state like Alaska), but this hardly looks like the "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" moment everyone's making it out to be.

P.S. Here's a piece that Palin's special counsel, John Katz, wrote in March of this year for the Juneau Empire, assuring the Alaskan public that Palin was still very much in favor of earmarks, but sadly needed to scale back her requests somewhat (to "only" 31 earmarks this year—down from 54 last year) in response to "unwanted attention" from Congress and the press

    How dare you.....!

    She has five children.

And each of these children spent five years as a POW.

    Wait....I might have the wrong.....
