Eyewall replacement cycles require concentric eyewalls. An outer EW forms and eventually deprives the inner eyewall of the lift needed to be sustained. If you don't see concentric eyewalls you can rule an EWRC out.
Well, it's not a "proper" EWRC per say, but it's still a hurricane struggling to replace it's eye, is my point. =P

Gustav strengthening again, but he's not able to wrap his eyewall. I'm not sure he gets back to cat4.

An eyewall replacement cycle is what it is. There are no proper or improper versions of it.

We'll see what the pressure says on the next recon pass. I'm surprised its this strong with the environment its in. Its not all that favorable at all. Hopefully it can weaken further.

Weather fascinates some. Like me. I hope for the best, but it is still interesting watching hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.

I think this is an old reading. I saw this around 10 AM.

Keep going down though! It getting closer to land so less room for strengthening.

Yeah I hate the damage they do, but watching a hurricane form and all the changes that can happen and it being something you have ZERO control over is fascinating I agree.

Much better than Tornados, Tornados scare the crap out of me due to they are so unpredictable in direction, when they come down, all of that jazz.

The eye of Gustav appears to be re-emerging, and it seems like it's a big one.

This could mean any number of things, but what it likely means is that Gustav is gaining strength. A larger eye would also likely indicate that he is able to maintain strength over land for a longer period of time.

I think I was a bit hasty in my earlier statement. Gustav could make landfall tomorrow as a category 4 hurricane. Not good.

Hurricane hunter plane is in the storm, should have some new measurements out in an hour or two.

I think it's going to strengthen back to a 4 though, look at the latest vapor image. An eye is starting to get organized.

Here's the visible to go with the above.

By the way, per the discussion on Accuweather, Gulf weather buoy near the eye logged a 45 foot wave

I'm fascinated by a single weather en y that is hundreds of miles across, can dump billions of gallons of water on a single area, and has winds of up to 190mph sustained which can gust to over 250mph, and just LOOKS like it does, well, I think it's just amazing. Impressive to no end. And incredibly compelling because of the sheer power of a storm. Watching it move through our atmosphere just rivets me.

Think about it. If you had NEVER seen or heard of a hurricane before (let's say you live in a tribe in South America) and suddenly someone tells you what a hurricane is, and shows you a satellite photo that looks like this:

    http://www.essc.psu.edu/essc_web/new.../hurricane.jpg

Well, wouldn't that just kind of blow your mind, too?

Its not the eye everyone is seeing. Its dry air on the edge of the CDO. Look at the infrared and compare it to the visible images.

Edit - A few mets just told me I'm wrong CH, so it looks you are right.

Nope. Great source of info. though.

By the way, to add to your comments about how amazing a hurricane is...

Science has pinned the amount of energy in a typical hurricane at greater than the energy that would be released by all the nuclear weapons on earth detonated at once. That's unreal to think about.

Aside from the meteorological, historical, and geographical implications of this storm...

I think part of it still comes down to human tendency.

It's the same reason people slow down when they pass a big wreck. You probably do it, I probably do it, everybody does it. Even if a wreck isn't blocking any lanes, you can expect traffic to build up to take a gander.

I'm sure none of us wish any ill will on these people, but for some morbid reason it's still intriguing. As a species, we seem to be generally interested in our own destruction, even if we don't necessarily support it or enjoy it.

Is it me or does anyone else think that Gus is moving pretty fast out there. I know originally they were calling for a Tuesday morning landfall, now it's a Monday morning to late afternoon landfall?

I would be far more excited about watching this storm if it was out in the middle of the Atlantic ing with a bunch of fish. I can't speak for anyone else but I just have a huge fascination with weather in general. Its not just Hurricanes.
