She said her daughter is keeping the baby and that she will marry the father of the baby. Glad to see she is keeping the baby instead of aborting it like many do nowadays.

Reuters: "The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin's five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

Bristol Palin made the decision on her own to keep the baby, McCain aides said. 'We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us,' the Palins' statement said. 'Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support,' the Palins said."

*** UPDATE *** Here's a statement the McCain camp released from Todd and Sarah Palin, which is identical to the quote in the Reuters story: "We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support."

"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."

My cousin of 17 years of age just had a baby out of wedlock, her whole family is super conservative and she and her new baby are being embraced with unconditional love by them. Life is beautiful, a baby is so innocent yet people treat unwed mothers like trash.....whY?

My question is why does the campaign feel that it's important to note that she made the choice to keep the baby? Why do you get credit for a not choosing the option you are trying to eradicate for other people? Was any other option (i.e., abortion) truly available to her?

It reminds me of the issue of the moral accountability of agents in a deterministic system. The argument is that if everything is predetermined (by God, the laws of physics, etc.), how can you hold an agent morally accountable for choices/actions? Some philosophers have posited that as long as we have the appearance of choice/other possibilities (which we do), it's enough to hold an agent morally accountable. I disagree with this position, but my explanation would take us too far off topic.

Also, what does it say that the McCain campaign is trying to give the Palin family credit for making a choice, while campaigning on a platform that would deny others the opportunity to make that same choice?
