They got lucky in 2 ways.
1. Look at the radar loops of when it came ashore. It was trending to NOLA all ing night, then 2 hours before landfall It veers almost DIRECTLY west. Huge wobble to the west saved them a lot of damage. A lot.
2. I didn't have en environment to ever ramp up again. Its so hard to tell how strong these storms are going to get and this one had a lot of good ingredients. I'd say 70% of the time storms with this path in the Gulf will it easy to grow in size. Gustav never got its act together which is great. Also, recon found concentric eye walls shortly before landfall. It was starting an Eye wall replacement cycle which weakened it even further.
All of that good luck on their side, and NOLA still almost saw those levees overtopped. They got lucky. And its a good thing they did, but to say it was not necessary to evacuate ignores so much common sense and what happened last time.

Those models that showed four storms active in the Atlantic basin are pretty much right on. That area right behind Ike will probably develop.
Exactly how big is Hanna right about now?
My biggest worry about this is that people will say this wasn't bad and won't evacuate next time and then get nailed.
There still seems to be some concern about several levees possibly failing this evening, Jindal is talking about extraordinarly high tides throughout the evening.
Hanna is a CAT 1 right now and is expected to upgrade to a CAT 2 late in the week.

Yikes. Jindal just said Pontchartrain is rising, they've had to activate some pumps and shut off the floodgates on one of the canals.

All I can say is evacuation wasn't necessary. You can talk about "what if's" all you want, but the fact of the matter is that evacuation wasn't necessary.
And imagine if Gustav had not moved at the last minute and if it had not went through an eye replacement at the last minute. Those levees would have been gone right now most likely. Good thing Gustav did what it did (for New Orleans). Baton Rouge and Lafayette are getting hit a lot harder though.
Did you not see those levees earlier today? had Gustav not did what it did, they would have been breached, easily.

If Gustav hadn't jogged slightly west right before landfall, all those levees that were getting overtopped today would have had a couple of feet of water flowing over them.
There's still flooding in the 9th ward. Talk about ignorance.
Since we are having all these storms being produced all at once...has there ever been a time where one storm has combined with another?
