    bad news keeps on rolling...

According to the UFC website, Lyoto Machida has been removed entirely from the UFC 89 card. Shane Carwin's fight is now on the main card instead.

I haven't heard any estimates on how long Thiago Silva will be out, but this could be a blessing in disguise for Machida. Beating Thiago probably would not have put him into le contention, and he's now open to a face a number of different guys.

One name being thrown around is Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in December. Shogun would be an underdog in that fight, which would have been hard to believe back before their respective fights at UFC 76. It's hard to see how Shogun would beat Machida stylistically, but it makes for an intriguing fight.

Evan who do you think the type of guy is that will beat Lyoto?? His offense is so elusive and annoying to try and attack. Maybe someone like Wandy who has great strikes and is aggressive as all . I think Page could take him maybe but he better stay active in the fight and not let Lyoto get compfortable.

Let me preface this by saying I fault no one for not liking Lyoto even though I kid around when they do. Be it music, movies, politics, religion, women or fighting you can't argue taste as its useless and a waste of time.

    With that said...

*puts on Lyoto underwear and combs hair*

He counters grappling, evades both punches and slow kicks...perfect example is the o fight. I am not sure aggressiveness would matter so much as he seems to be able to frustrate everyone as he chips away at them and out cardio's their oxygen blood count.

To me Lyoto is a perfect new breed of hybrid MMA fighter who is pretty damn good at everything and to his fault (IN THE EYES OF FANS) I think he is so well trained that he does nothing but listen to his coaching, follow the game plan and does not free style enough away from the game plan.

I think he would frustrate Wanderlei so much that it wouldn't go well for him.

I think the fighter that beats Lyoto will have fast long ranging leg strikes.

As I said in another thread..

No doubt he's a tough sell at this point in time but I think he will grow on people eventually. A KO or two will go a long way as we the mma fan are a emotional, fickle and reactionary breed much akin to the college football and soccer fan. If he wins his next fight he will get a le shot. He only has 13 fights he still has so much room to grow.
A couple ko's and people will forget he was "boring"

If you want to waste time you can find some old threads (2002 to 2005ish) in other forums where people complain that Fedor is boring because he has too many submissions. Someone on sherdog must have spent a week searching as he found about 40 of them on various sites about a year ago and posted them in one thread.

Now I am not saying Lyoto is the LHW Fedor...I'm just giving an example of perspective changing over time. This guys is only 30, 5 years into mma...13 fights...look at what he has done. Astounding.

Lets just give it time but mind you I believe the days are over for a long time where modern fighters will go on much of anything more than a 6 to 10 fight winning streak at high level orgs of fighting. Lyoto and Silva are due for a loss as the gap between these guys are so close right now which is nothing short of great for excitement but it would be nice to see some more stability. Minor complaint.

And one more thing...as much as I like Machida I would not want to see a handful of guys fight with his style.

Wandy is aggressive enough and has a good enough chin that it could make for a great fight.

Rashad's fight was an example of this "style" that Machida has. You "elude" strikes to frustrate your opponent. In Rashad's case, it made Chuck more aggressive lowering his hands to try to get in that one " ed" shot as he is coming forward, rather fight his style of countering.

Honestly, we can watch point karate matches to see quick strikers that are great at eluding and get their hits in. Machida is a point karate guy that has added in take down defense and some BJJ. If that's the "hybird MMA" that is going to take over MMA, put to it to sleep now. I have a group of friends that seems to grow all the time as MMA fans. At UFC 66, it was me and my brother-in-law. Last UFC? We had almost 20 people. Do you want to know how many like Machida? 2 People. That's only because they were into Karate. The rest think he is boring as and don't want to watch him. The boring label is there because he is boring. You know who else they don't like? Tim Sylvia. None of them knew who Fedor was, but they cheered like when he smashed Tim.

There's a reason why Houston Alexander garnered so much popularity, Wandy and number of others. People are wanting to watch people fight, aggressiveness is what makes people watch.

The argument I seem to read is that people believe that fans find him boring because they don't appreciate his game. I don't believe that to be true, because what I would see was people that found BJJ and wrestling boring. There are aspects when it used to stall and no action takes place, which does make it boring. Some people though, believed it was all "gay and boring" once it hit the ground. Now that people understand more of the game, they find it great. I mean people in the group knew what a whizzer was. They can see the moves coming and call out the subs before Rogan or Goldberg would call it. Now, this is strictly the ground game. On the feet, people understand what is going on, which is where Machida tries to keep the fight. Therefore, I don't understand how people wouldn't appreciate what he is doing. I'm sure they understand what he is doing, he is boring.

Machida is unpopular as "all get out."

Machida's style and fans reaction to that style is like the spurs but as long as you get the job done, right?.

And I am not saying Machida is a champion because I am not sure what he is. I just find him interesting.

    Staying in lhw... Jardine?

Perfect example.I think Jardine would give him serious problems….pound away at those hamstrings…counter is how slow Jardine resets himself after a leg strike so there is that problem for Jardine as he will have a short window left open over and over again.

I just find such a guy fascinating to bring into the mix…anyone that creates so many problems helps the sport evolve..Sherk is a winner but his style is nothing new. He is what he is.

Personally, I'd like to see Machida fight Rampage Jackson. That is the true number one contender match at this point, and with Chuck Liddell out of the 205 le picture, it's much harder to keep Machida in le purgatory. Machida/Shogun is more like a Sherdog dream match and less of a match that will do much of anything for either guy.

    advertising fail

Much was made a few weeks back when Affliction sponsored a race car in NASCAR to hype the Day Of Reckoning PPV. That seemed all well and good, until reader Joseph Miller brought something to our attention:

It just seems odd to me that Affliction would promote their event at a NASCAR race when the next Affliction event is scheduled for the same time as a NASCAR night race.

Glancing at the calendar does reveal a race that night, from Charlotte Motor Speedway. This event will be during the NASCAR Playoff round, being hosted in Charlotte which is one of their marquee markets, so swaying fans from the race will be a hard sell. Spending advertising dollars to advertise in a medium that will be competing against you seems to hint at poor planning, to put it kindly.

Oh and a thousand bucks for some of those seats when some of the guys that fight on that card will be making about 5-10 grand is DAMN criminal. The UFC is still ripping these kids off like nobody's business.
