Ike just continues to chug but he does not look to be strengthening. No eye has formed yet, and outflow to the west is non-existent.

Puzzling to say the least. He should be bombing out right now.

Hey, I might drive past Jekka's parents' place every day heading home from work. Gameplan right now is to stick it out. My guess is with the Rita evac being such a cluster most people will.

Local media seems to be handling things a little more responsibly, advising people to only evacuate if they are in the zone. In 2005 the coverage basically went:
1) Interview with city official advising people to not panic and please only evacuate if they are being told to.
2) Cut back to the studio: "RUN MOTHER ERS! OMG!!!1!!!11! And now, Tom with weather."
3) Tom: "RUN MOTHER ERS!!!! OMG!!!!11!!!1!"

The barrier islands will be underwater Mandy. They don't help, they just get ed up worse than anyone elese.

I don't think I'd leave unless it got a lot stronger. The surge is going to be a huge , so I'd def leave if I was in a costal flood prone area. But taht should jjust be extreme south eastern Houston.

it seems every time there is an estimation about where it will make landfall it shifts and throws them out the door.

i'd reckon it starts to make a more north by northwest trek and hit the eastern most outlying areas of the forecast cone.

This is a SCARY storm. It's packing 50% more energy than Katrina with a projected storm surge in the Houston/Galveston area of fifteen feet. It is shaping up to be the most powerful storm energy wise (not necessarily wind speed) in the last 40 years.

The Wifey and I are going to tuff it out - we're near 610/59 on the Western portion of the city, so hopefully everything will be fine.

As SFIE said - we're not evacing this time. According to all reports, we should have classes cancelled, but we're here till 5. Well, the other suckers are here till 5, we're checking out early to round out our supplies.

We're still on the dirty side of the storm with high winds and rain expected, and it could still be a direct hit. Though, since it tends to continue shifting northward every new cycle, it may yet take the Rita path. In which case I will celebrate our good fortune with a day off.

But I'm a little freaked out over this storm right now, and would like to get home and to work on cleaning out the storage closet so we've got a place to shelter, just in case.

Edited to add - We are 59 and Beechnut, right by Channel 2. The surrounding streets might flood with tons of rain, but otherwise, the biggest danger is something through one of our 2 story windows. Can't do much about that though, so . . .
