I don't really know and I'm too lazy to go into my own profile and check it out, but IIRC there are two ways of loading an avatar- one is to upload it to the ST server and the other is to link to an off site server. Again, it's just my hypothesis, but I'd suspect those limitations are only for avatars you upload to ST. My guess is that if you link to an off site source you can have a larger size?
