Golden Boy Promotions – the boxing promotion company spearheaded by Oscar De La Hoya – and Affliction Entertainment on Saturday are set to announce a partnership between the two companies.

Golden Boy Promotions’ CEO Richard Schaefer and Affliction vice president Tom Atencio will make the announcement during the Ricky Hatton vs. Paulie Malignaggi press conference at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Golden Boy is one of the promoter’s of the boxing match set for Nov. 22 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

This is not the first time that the two companies have tried to work together. In March of this year, a partnership was nearly forged between Affliction and Golden Boy prior to Affliction’s debut in mixed martial art promotion.

A source close to the negotiations said talks broke down when Affliction made the partnership announcement prematurely. When contacted for comment in March, Bruce Binkow, Chief Marketing Officer for Golden Boy, told MMAWeekly.com that his company was not getting into the MMA business any time soon.

That will now change as Golden Boy and Affliction are expected to announce that their partnership will begin with “Day of Reckoning,” Affliction’s sop re offering that was recently postponed from Oct. 11 in Las Vegas and moved to Jan. 17 in Anaheim, Calif.

Affliction has already confirmed that No.1 ranked MMA heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko will headline the rescheduled event at the Honda Center.

Though no word has been forthcoming from either promoter, it is expected that the partnership would include events that commingle boxing and MMA bouts on the same fight card. The move of Affliction’s event gives the two time to work out details and strategies to make such a hybrid fight card possible for the January event.

Stay tuned to MMAWeekly.com as details of the partnership develop…

    Horrible idea...

Most fans as well as me are not going to spend $55 to see two mma fights on a boxing card.

I could see this working on a smaller show but not with big heavy paydays.

But put a couple of MMA fights on an Oscar Delahoya card and expose that to millions of people that would otherwise never give MMA a chance.

Oh thats true....no doubt. But I'm just looking at it for affliction only. MMA fans are extremely vocal about wanting to see lots of fights on a card so I am just not sure how this will work for them..

Good for mma...doesn't make much sense affliction.

With Dela Hoya's name attached, it would open Affliction to a wider audience.

Though this hybrid card can be confusing. Will MMA fans stay and watch boxing should the MMA card be pushed at a later time? Ditto with boxing fans...

Boxing is too slow for most mma fans and mma fans are bombarded with UFC PPV's on a constant basis so there is limited expendable dollars from the get go.

Afflictions first card failed with massive big names albeit poor match ups so I am not sure how less fights on a hybrid card can do any better.

Unless boxing fans are willing to s out $80 for fugly t-shirts in droves affliction is a dead corpse in due time.....

Golden Boy isn't stupid...they get the better end of this deal by far. I am sure their risk is minimal.

I saw one guy at Krogers a year ago wear one....

And there is this middle eastern dude who runs a gas station by my place that wears one sometimes.

Other than that I am not sure who wears them,

    HBO Unhappy with Golden Boy/Affliction

    Promoted by Michael Rome

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine over at HBO (who will remain anonymous) and they want nothing to do with "bas izing" (as he put it) their Boxing product.

It seems Golden Boy offered the Arlovski/Barnett fight on the under card of Hopkins/Pavlik... but HBO rejected the idea.

We also discussed the end game:

If Golden Boy is successful what then? You just converted another fan pool for the UFC. The casual UFC fan will not order these mixed boxing/MMA cards who wouldn't already... so the best case scenario for Golden Boy is to convert their boxing fans into MMA fans.

Is Golden Boy taking a risk may bite them in the ass? It seems HBO is not.

If you work the numbers and realize that in order to be successful you would have to convert a good portion of the boxing fans into MMA fans... that opens up alot of variables that can blow up in your face - for example: right now boxing ppv's are hurt by counter programming via other boxing events on other networks...

This would create a situation where counter programming by other MMA events can then have a similar effect.

For HBO It would be like playing chess against 2 players where you only have one set while the other 2 each have their own... how can you conceivably protect your king?

I can't stand Shaw but he makes a good point...

The news of Affliction Fighting's new partnership with Golden Boy Promotions wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire around the boxing folks at the MGM Grand this weekend. They were in attendance for the Joel Casamayor-Juan Manuel Marquez fight. Affliction and Golden Boy are fooling themselves if they think ANY of the boxing media on hand was happy to learn that they may have to watch future cards featuring both boxing and mixed martial arts fights. There's simply no experience amongst the 'young' fellas in the boxing media with MMA and they view it as compe ion akin to taking bread off of their plates. And if you've seen much of the boxing media, you know not to mess with their plates.

    ...

Shaw (pictured w/Kimbo Slice) described the MMA fans as a sort of cult who won't be open to the pacing of boxing. He also said there is no market in boxing for apparel. The apparel market in MMA has exploded because the fans live the sport's "lifestyle." Shaw thinks that boxing doesn't have fans that follow the sport with such loyalty to buy t-shirts and gear that runs $40+.

Nowhere to be found in Dallas.

Mind you this city is America's melting pot as there is a ton of jobs here with a low cost of living so we don't really have much of a culture here. Its just kind of people from all over the US.
