A 4-month-old girl was fatally mauled by her family's two pit bulls Friday at their North Las Vegas home.
The baby's grandmother, who was watching the baby while her parents were at work, was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries sustained as she tried to protect her granddaughter. North Las Vegas police Chief Joseph Forti said the dogs were in the backyard of the home, near Cheyenne Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard, prior to the attack.
The dogs managed to enter the home, possibly by bursting through a screen door, and began attacking the baby as she lay in a stroller, he said.
"They just went right for the little girl," he said.
The grandmother took the baby and tried to escape into a room of the house.
She tried to close the door behind her, but one of the dogs forced its way into the room, Forti said, followed by the other.
They began attacking the girl again, and the grandmother called police at about 11:25 a.m.
When officers arrived, they found the two dogs with blood on their fur "acting very aggressively" toward the officers, according to a statement issued by the department. Police shot and killed the dogs.
Officers found the baby lying on the floor of a bedroom, dead from her injuries.
"This is about as severe an attack as I've seen in my 18 years in North Las Vegas," North Las Vegas Animal Control officer Dale Smock said.
Forti said he was told by officers the girl had suffered "very severe bite and head wounds."
The attack was so severe that officers and medical personnel who responded to the incident are being offered counseling, Forti and North Las Vegas Fire Department Capt. Cedric Williams said.
"This is something they don't see every day," Williams said.
The names of the baby and the grandmother were not released by police.
According to neighbors, the parents of the baby were new to the typical valley neighborhood of stucco houses and neat yards, having just moved into the home on Eagle View Way in recent months. One neighbor said he had seen the dogs loose in the neighborhood at least once.
Neighbor Jason Howe was furious.
"You don't have pit bulls around children, period," he said.
"The whole situation's sad," said 75-year-old neighbor Stan Heaton.
In June, a 2-year-old boy suffered serious injuries after a neighbor's boxer bit him on his face and neck in the northwest valley.
And in April, two children, ages 4 and 5, were hospitalized after being attacked by a neighbor's boxer and a pit bull near Vegas Valley and McLeod drives.
North Las Vegas has investigated 192 dog attacks since the beginning of last year, including 73 attacks from pit bulls, Smock said.
One of those attacks was on one of the city's animal control officers, who was investigating a complaint on July 3.
After walking into a backyard, she was attacked by two pit bulls and has yet to return to full-time duty at the department, Smock said.
Smock said pit bull attacks cause deep wounds that are "sometimes compared to shark attacks."
Forti said he didn't know whether charges would be pressed against the family, a decision left up to the district attorney's office.
ahh...it had been a while
I would have plugged an extra couple rounds in those dogs for good measure
well, it's good to go ahead and get our weekly mauling out of the way.
.........correction......weekly PITBULL mauling out of the way.![]()
of course.. that's what i meant.
Wow. I bet the parents are thrilled to know their stupid dogs mutilated their baby.
It's not the dogs' fault; they are just dogs. It's the parents' fault for owning the dogs at the same time a small child is in the home. The dogs should have been re-located to a non-kill shelter, not shot. The parents should be charged with negligent manslaughter and thrown in prison.
scola thread!
er, i mean pitbull thread!
Yep. No child is 100% safe with any breed of dog.
Hugh? Ok....I guess I get it a little. Those dogs could have just as easily killed anyone, child or not. It could have been someone jogging down the street. So it is the dogs fault in my opinion.
Also, wasnt the child in the house and the dogs crashed through a window? And you say it isnt the dogs fault?![]()
Well it says they crashed in thru a screen door. My personal experience is that a screen door is no match for even a small poodle!
Dude, they are dogs. You guys are acting like this is some moral choice that they consciously made. "I would have plugged a couple extra shots in them for good measure." that. We bred this breed to be vicious and mean. By their very instincts they are killers, but we as humans know that. We created that trait in them so we could gamble and make money on it. I don't care if they crashed through the window, if a parent has a small child, any child really, they shouldn't own dogs bred specifically to be vicious killers. As humans we have the moral decision making ability to either keep dangerous dogs around or not. All the pitbulls had was the instinct they were created for. You guys need to start taking responsibility for the dumb human choices and quit blaming the dogs for doing what they were originally bred to do, by humans- kill.
My god. They have learned how to breach window barriers.
We must act quickly before they amass their full capabilities.
my dobe is the sweetest dog in the world. they should be portraying pit bulls as evil on tv -- not dobermans. plus, if you keep a notoriously aggressive dog inside and baby it, it'll become a baby itself. it pisses me off when people take aggressive dogs and leave them chained in the backyard.
Yeah, but I guarantee you if that was your baby. You sure the wouldn't see it that way? That is the kind of bull that makes you want to go around and shoot every ing pitbull that you see.And there you are making excuses for a ing stupid ass dog? What a dumb ass.![]()
B2B's weekly defense of obviously dangerous dogs who kill babies in 3...2...1...
I wouldn't be the negligent parent that keeps a pitbull around my baby in the first place. Try putting some responsibility on the creature that has decision making abilities. Call me a dumbass over something like this? . You. ing little .
pit bulls are awesome
Something similar happened to my niece, luckily she survived but it wasnt with pitbulls it was with a White Shepard and a smaller dog, the got into a fight and it spilled over into one of them tearing into my niece, her mom was outside bringing in groceries and was away but 1 minute when it happened.
I live here in Vegas so this story was all over the news its very sad. I hate hearing this all the time cuz ive mentioned I have the sweetest female pit who has never shown any kind of agression towards anyone and she is basicly afraid of her own shadow. She hides in the close during thunderstorms or when fireworks are going off, if she could fit under the bed she would be there. She has always been good with other pets both cats and dogs and with kids even babies but we have never ever left her in a room alone with one. Her defense when a kid or baby is annoying her is just to lick them in the face until they go away.

pit bulls are about as cool as aids
I own 2 Pits
My Blue Pit is by far the best dog I have ever had.
I hope the parents go to jail 4 the rest of there lives and the 2 pitt bulls make a visit to the Michael Vick ranch.
