I stopped listening to OAI consistently after that happened.
Schoening is a hack.
He stutters and has wayyyyyyyyyyy too much dead air for a PBP guy, ESPECIALLY radio.
Hes a funny guy, a NICE guy, but he has no business calling PBP for a professional basketball team.

What a bunch of crap! Bill Schoening is the finest PBP man in all of the NBA. Clear Channel was right to remove Jay Howard for Bill. Just look at the fine broadcasters Clear Channel has provided for you in the past few years: Bill Schoening, Walter Pasacrita, Mike Taylor, Jim Bob, Peter Burns and Andy Everett.
Getting rid of the Thompson Brothers and breaking up Charlie & Chance paved the way for the quality sports broadcasts we can all treasure today.
Kudos to Clear Channel for having the vision to give Spurs fans the quality, knowledgable sports minds they deserve.

Jay Howard was a product of the politics of money and how it infects the radio world.

Never in the history of sports has someone lost a job due from doing it well it's always about money.
Jay Howard had a job doing Spurs play by play for over 20 years,...you do the math.

And ship Schoening back to the Longhorns. Their radio team has sucked ass since he left. Craig Way should be doing 3A high school games in west Texas.

Jay is the only play by play where I would tune out the national broadcast and listen to him...
Thank goodness for sean elliott for giving me an alternative and making me put jay way in the recesses of my mind. Schoenig is mediocre but the best...wow...just wow

I listened to Spurs broadcasts as I moved around Texas from '86 - '95 when I finally moved back to SA. Jay Howard was a great PBP guy.
Now I've moved to PA, and listed to Shoening; he's pretty good, too.
It might be nostalgia, but I think I enjoyed Howard more.
Anyone know why he was left go in the first place?

I thinkhe bit the hand that fed him. On some shows, talked badly about spurs front office, etc
all the tv broadcasters and commenters suck out loud...if is wasn't so difficult to sync them up with the delays between the radio and tv broadcast, i would turn down the tv volume and listen to the radio...
THAT'S THE BEST PART ABOUT GOING TO THE BIG GAMES (at least home games)...eff the TV
He's won numerous awards for PBP, including the Associated Press has given him the Top Texas Play-by-Play award four times. So apparently, you are in the minority.
I agree that Jay Howard was good, but he didn't treat people well and had a huge ego. He hasn't been able to get a decent radio job since and I believe he's now out of radio (at one point a few years back I heard he was going into real estate). That should tell you something ... Because pretty much any radio guy can just move on to another station.
